Celine in an all-star tribute, "Come Together Now"

Russell Simmons is working with his Hip-Hop Summit Action Network to put together an entire album — The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network Presents: Forces of Nature — to benefit the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Simmons said the idea came to him two days ago but that already the number of songs pledged is "mind-boggling."

 

"The outpouring of heart from the community is unprecedented," he said. "I'm getting a record from Mariah Carey. Puffy has said he's working on one, I hope I get that. He's has a gospel record I'm trying to get him to give me. ... Snoop. Kanye West. I got a Reverend Run record that will knock your brain out. ... Most of the songs are about healing. Everybody has been supportive. No one has turned us down. It's a wonderful feeling to see this kind of outpouring."

 

Simmons said a major ensemble has recorded a track as well. "One record I got, Denise Rich made and Sharon Stone is paying for the video," he elaborated. "It's got like 20 artists on there already. Everybody from Celine Dion to Game."

 

Simmons said Rich's record was originally started in the wake of the Asian tsunami tragedy but definitely applies to what happened with Katrina.

 

"It's a big pop ballad, it's got everybody on the whole world on there," he reiterated. "Everybody you can think of, and it's called 'We Are One.' Denise Rich produced it. She's been working on it for six months and she just mixed it today. They filmed every recording, so everyplace they flew for Jadakiss or Game or Chingy to rap, they filmed every artist doing their part. She wants to put that out right now."

Meanwhile, millionaire songstress Denise Rich has written a song with actress Sharon Stone for the same purpose. Rich told me at the Kia Milla fashion show that she’s already recorded Celine Dion on the track and is now putting more singers on it. (You can add singers to a track now by computer. There’s no more of that ‘check your ego at the door stuff’.) No doubt Rich’s pals Natalie Cole and Patti Labelle will be featured.

I heard that straight from Russell Simmons, the hip-hop tycoon himself.

 

All the proceeds from the sale of the CD Simmons is putting together will go toward hurricane relief.

 

“We’re making a relief effort CD right now,” Simmons said. “I’ve got a Puffy song. I got a Rev. Run (DMC) song. We have one song that has 25 artists on it. It has everybody on it from Celine Dion to The Game. I’ve got a whole bunch of songs.”

The Game, Celine Dion, Chingy, JoJo, Jesse McCartney and Ruben Studdard are among the artists lending their voices to the hurricane relief charity single "Come Together Now." Actress Sharon Stone and songwriter/socialite Denise Rich teamed up to write the track, which will be unveiled on Monday during a press conference in Hollywood. Hurricane Katrina/Tsunami Relief Benefit Project

The song, "Come Together Now", written by Sharon Stone, Damon Sharpe, MarkFeist, and Denise Rich, was inspired by the magnitude of human suffering and tragedy that touched so many lives after the tsunami disaster last December. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina we will now use this song as a combined effort to raise funds for the two global tragedies. The following artists have participated: Celine Dion, The Game, Joss Stone, John Legend, Wyclef Jean, Mya, JoJo, Rueben Studdard, Patti Labelle, Gavin Degraw, Anthony Hamilton, Natalie Cole, Stacie Orrico, Kelly Price, Chingy, Jesse Macartney, The Backstreet Boys, Aaron Carter, Anthony Hamilton, Angie Stone, Lee Ryanand Glenn Lewis.  The track was being produced by Mark J. Feist and Damon Sharpe (Destiny's Child, Jennifer Lopez, Mya.) Top musicians have offered their time to play on the track:  Steve Lukather on guitar, Abe Laborial, Jr. on drums and Greg Phillinganes on acoustic grand piano.  The strings were arranged and conducted by Bill Meyers, whose credits include Destiny's Child, Brian McKnight, Madonna, and Earth Wind and Fire. The song was mixed by legendary mix engineer Jon Gass.

All proceeds from the song will benefit Hurricane Katrina/Tsunami relief. Rebuilding the damage is a journey that will take a long time and our intent is to establish revenue that will continue past the release of the single.

We have documented all the stages of production for the music video and a making of DVD that will also be sold and given to the Charity. Both will be directed by music video and feature film director Bille Woodruff.

The Come Together Foundation is a newly constituted (501 3c) charity with the purpose of collecting all monies raised from the album, DVD and all related merchandising and broadcast rights. The Foundation will distribute the funds to the appropriate charities working in the region.

Sharon Stone is a three-time Golden Globe nominee and iconic presence in Hollywood who has starred in countless critical and commercial Hollywood successes, including The Muse, Basic Instinct, Total Recall and The Mighty.  Ranked among the top 100 movie stars of all time by Empire magazine, Stone received a Golden Globe award and Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her pivotal role in Martin Scorcese's Casino. Sharon is heavily involved in many humanitarian causes, she has been the campaign chairman of the American Foundation for Aids Research for eleven years. In addition fourteen years ago she established Planet Hope an organization that helps homeless children and their families with her sister Kelly Stone.

Denise Rich is an award-winning songwriter who has written numerous hits for top recording artists, including top-ten hit "Candy" for Mandy Moore, Grammy-nominated "Don't Waste Your Time" performed by Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige and others, triple-platinum "Love is on the Way" for Celine Dion and chart-topping "In This Skin" for Jessica Simpson.  Her work spans a variety of musical genres and has been featured in several movie soundtracks including Runaway Bride, John Q and Chicago, among others.

Damon Sharpe and Mark J. Feist are multi-platinum producers and songwriters who have worked with the likes of Jennifer Lopez (the #1 song "Love Don't Cost a Thing"), Destiny's Child (the #1 song "Emotion"), Kelly Rowland, Monica, Anastacia ("Paid My Dues", which hit #1 in sixteen countries), Ginuwine, legendary artist George Clinton, the Grammy award-winning soundtrack for the film Chicago, Kimberley Locke and Justin Guarini of American Idol, and many others. Most recently, the duo wrapped work with R and B superstar Mya.
