Squall Posted February 4, 2026 at 04:41 PM Posted February 4, 2026 at 04:41 PM I think Lara's timing in coming to the US market was just off. If she had made an attempt in the early 90s, I think she would have had a lot more success. Late 90s was all about boy bands, Britney, and not so much on divas with incredible voices. Plus, her English album was filled with pretty weak songs. Incredible voice but the songs just weren't there. There are a couple I think were gems but it wasn't enough. I liked her more recent English album "Camouflage" much more. 1 Quote
PuraVida Posted February 10, 2026 at 09:31 AM Posted February 10, 2026 at 09:31 AM I found this radio interview with Vito Luprano quite revealing. I learned some stuff I never would have known otherwise -- so if his book is anything like this, then it should be worth buying for Celine fans. I do sense some ego with him, but surely he wouldn't be lying about all the process-oriented stuff about choosing songs, etc. And if he really was the one who spearheaded the Taking Chances album, then he deserves a lot of credit...along with Celine of course who sang it all, obviously. PuraVida Posted February 10, 2026 at 10:28 AM Posted February 10, 2026 at 10:28 AM He said he has one more album in him, a vision that he has had for a long time for Celine to do. Taking Chances album was a great one as far as I'm concerned, so I'm intrigued... but I wonder if too much time has passed and now Vito's idea might be somewhat out-of-step with 2026 music scene. By the way, Lara Fabian recently appeared on one popular French show that I saw--and they didn't bring up the whole drama. However, they did bring up Eurovision and Lara mentioned Celine's name right before they were going to. Quote

It is revealing indeed. However, I’m not totally sure if he’s right about the dates when he mentions the problem with her management. According to him, he saw her in January 2020, when her mother passed. He suggested her to call him, which she apparently never did, as he knew she had problems with her manager. We know her management team at the time was formed by Dave Platel and Denis Savage, who weren’t fired six months later (July 2020) as he said here. In fact, they were still her managers in 2021, 2022 and 2023. If I’m not mistaking, her current management showed up in 2024. That being said, his book is totally worth buying. I recently finished reading it and it’s one of the most revealing and interesting Céline-related releases in years. I hope she’ll call him one day and they’ll do that famous album he’s had in mind for so long. Still, as mentioned above, it’s definitely not true she didn’t have a hit with her post-Vito albums. tshlw Posted February 10, 2026 at 06:53 PM Posted February 10, 2026 at 06:53 PM I am sure some truth but also I have a feeling some exaggeration. But convenient to publish years after Rene gone so just your detail of events. He has said in other interviews he did not know if Celine read the book. I have a feeling she did not. Just that he sent a copy to her and supposedly her lawyers gave the ok to publish. But we have no proof of a lot of what he says. Like Rene telling him to wait till he had passed before publishing. He has already talked about a lot of this in a book by Laurence Pieau for Pieau's book 'Céline Dion - La Vraie histoire'. His attacks were so personal that one of the members of the board who was not a fan of Rene, questioned anything he had to say at all. Here is link to the review http://www.celinedionforum.com/topic/50433-tensions-between-vito-luprano-and-celinerene/page__st__60__hl__+laurence%20+pieau#entry2436848 So I don't know how much is true or if it is him wanting some recognition and exaggerating things to get that. But I think some of what he said to me at least is a personal attack on Rene that is unwarranted at this point after he has been dead for over 10 years. Like any of the stuff about Rene loving Celine or not, like that has nothing to do with the songs and her career. Why bring that up if you care so much about Celine why would you include that. I recently finished reading it and it's one of the most revealing and interesting Céline-related releases in years. I have so many other books that I have to get through, but I'll try to pin this one and read it at some point. Because in reality, when or WHO else would we get a book from who was *as close* to Celine and her inner circle, especially during the heyday years? Imagine if only half of it were true, then that's still 50% of stuff left that would be gold nuggets for fans. Btw -- just because Lara Fabian's manager or whatever denied something, doesn't mean it was a lie. She also has a reputation to uphold after all. That said, I do believe she has great love and respect for Celine. And incidentally I do think her profile has gone up lately *in part* as a result of Celine's absence -- but that's just subjective opinion. 1 Quote

If Cèline has said 2007 was an especially tough and stressful year for her and Rene, he may have been less patient and a bit more jealous during that time and during the recording of TC. I feel like during that time Cèline was wishing she could have another break and was mentioning that, from performing after Vegas and have more children but from a career viewpoint she needed to get back out there with the world tour. It must have been so hard for her, the anguish of having to balance family life with her career, Rene trying to keep her career going...I'm sure its obvious she embarked on the TC world tour at a time when she was completely burnt out from Vegas but still put her all in to it, it's interesting and sad to watch the TC world tour DVD and see all the smiles and energy she was putting in to it for the fans and the signs of her illness coming on and to see her in tears after the last show. You can see alot reading between the lines or by studying her face closely, even now, her eyes and face telling the real truth, she has very expressive eyes 'Eyes are the window to your soul'. Her singing My Love live during this time I feel is a little glimpse into the truth. Linda Perry indicated that song was about everyone around Cèline, husband, family, friends, fans. If reading between the lines at different times matches up with certain things Vitos book says, it could also be clues where the book is revealing the truth at different times in her career Edited February 17, 2026 at 02:59 AM by scarletpimpernel 2 Quote
PuraVida Posted February 17, 2026 at 03:59 AM Posted February 17, 2026 at 03:59 AM I'm so glad she got that time with Linda Perry -- who btw seems to be having a bit of a renaissance at the moment. I wonder if they can work together again, what kind of song would Linda write for Celine. It's interesting if Celine was burnt out, which is highly possible. But I remember her interview on Larry King live talking about the upcoming tour and she seemed so refreshed and excited, ready for adventure. One one hand, we can imagine someone being trapped in Vegas for 5 years really relishing traveling the world again. Quote

He seems to be more on Vito's side, also because of his experiences/doubts about René. I don't think we'll every truly know who was responsible for what, or who suggested which song to Céline, etc. Frankly I never heard René taking credits for songs like MHWGO, TPOL or IACBTMN.... And if Vito was the one that suggested them..? Well it was his job, how much credits do you want? I can believe that René also had a cold business side to him. But unfortunately, you can't make it big in this world when you don't have that capacity. I do believe Vito to some extend, but it's always easier to claim things when the other party can't respond anymore. Here is the English translation: Quote The Céline Dion-René Angélil team was a trio. Vito Luprano, the third wheel, tells his version of the fairy tale February 15, 2026 Ten years after René Angélil's death, three years after Céline Dion cancelled her "Courage" world tour, comes *It's All Coming Back to Me*, a book that sheds new light on the phenomenal story of this couple who reached international stardom like no one else in Quebec. In fact, we never realized there were three of them in this fairy tale. This memoir is the work of Vito Luprano, the third wheel in this carriage. As a project manager for Céline Dion's record company (CBS Records, now Sony Music Canada), Vito Luprano accompanied the couple through every stage of their rise to fame. He was there for the signing of their first contract in 1986, which resulted in the album Incognito, and continued through to the creation of the album Taking Chances, released in 2009. Do the math: that's 23 years of collaboration, more precisely 21 albums in 23 years as executive producer. Admit it, it's quite remarkable that this influential figure behind Céline's success, which has translated into record-breaking record sales, isn't better known. It's estimated that she has sold over 200 million records in her career. As he celebrates his 70th birthday this year, Vito Luprano has decided to step out of the shadows and claim his share of the credit. Of course, this somewhat tarnishes the aura of René Angélil, who did everything he could, during his lifetime, to claim credit for the creation of his protégée. Vito Luprano waited a long time before speaking out; he can't be accused of rushing things. Yes, he waited until ten years had passed since René Angélil's death, but he also had to overcome the deep depression into which the abrupt end of his relationship with René and Céline plunged him, and learn to tame the demons that had long haunted him. It is precisely this time he took to publish his story, and the great candor with which he does so, that leads me to believe him. From the very first pages, he recounts his humble origins in Puglia, Italy, and his emigration to Canada in 1967 with his father, Alessandro, his mother, Anna, his three sisters, and his two brothers. When he arrived in Montreal, he was 11 years old and spoke neither English nor French. He found himself in an English school. This was a time when the French-language Catholic school system didn't want these immigrants, even if they were Catholic. Since his academic results weren't very convincing, and the family's financial needs were significant, Mama Luprano told her son, Vito, that he had to leave school to go to work and pay for his upkeep. Thus began his life burdened by the lack of a diploma, a deficiency that would soon lead to the development of imposter syndrome, which would be extremely difficult to overcome throughout his life. After working as a cutter in a coat factory in the Chabanel district, Vito tried to find a job involving music. It sparked his interest, and he felt he had a knack for anticipating what the world would love. Before working with Céline Dion, he worked for The Record Pool, a Montreal company that supplied nightclub DJs with the latest disco recordings. He then found himself promoting artists on CBS Records, still trying to convince himself he had the skills for the job. “Fake it till you make it.” “I made a vow, silently, like a prayer: I swore I would give everything I have to everything I do,” he wrote. After representing Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Aerosmith, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Journey during their Montreal tours, CBS executives entrusted him with Céline's career as executive producer. "…I learned that having confidence isn't about never doubting or worrying—it's simply about choosing to move forward, no matter what." Vito Luprano's account of what followed proves this point. For Céline, there would never be limits. The job of the head of the A&R (Artists and Repertoire) department is to find the best songs for her talent, as well as the best collaborators. The man has no formal qualifications, so he relies on his instincts. And clearly, Vito Luprano has an extraordinary flair in this area. It started with a bang with "Incognito" in French and "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" in English, and it never stopped. The proof? If we believe Luprano's account, he is credited, as executive producer, with laying the groundwork for a multitude of Céline Dion's international hits. A feat achieved step by step. Over the years, Vito Luprano's role would consist of, among other things, getting Aldo Nova on board to work on Incognito, pushing René and Céline to embrace his belief that Where Does My Heart Beat Now was a guaranteed hit, convincing David Foster to join the Unison project, and skillfully maneuvering to get Falling Into You to Céline's ears so that she would fall in love with the song. He was the one who had the idea of approaching Sir George Martin to produce The Reason because he heard something Beatlesque in Carole King's song, and while he was at it, why not ask Luciano Pavarotti to be Céline's partner in the duet I Hate You Then I Love You! It's clear that he was also the one who convinced Céline and René to leave Phil Spector's studio when he realized that the inventor of the Wall of Sound was putting his gun on the mixing console, not to mention his ill intentions toward the singer and her manager. Just like with Ike and Tina Turner back in the day. The book is full of anecdotes, and I'll spare you the details, and some of them are just as good. The author even throws in some figures. Contracts, advances, percentages—usually taboo subjects are addressed in this book, because Céline's career involved a lot of money spent on recording albums, even more so when you sell such considerable quantities. Sony Music Canada made a fortune thanks to Céline! There are also revelations that simply make us want to listen to Céline's songs again in light of what Vito Luprano tells us. You'll understand why Céline's performances are so heartfelt in songs like "My Heart Will Go On," a song that almost didn't exist, recorded at the same time as Céline and the rest of the world mourned the tragic death of Princess Diana, or "All By Myself," recorded on a day when René deliberately started a fight with Céline so that his pain would be heard in her voice! Because, yes, Vito Luprano doesn't hesitate to portray René Angélil in a less flattering light: manipulative when necessary, controlling, a player—familiar traits—but also impulsive, and, this is something we didn't know, taking credit for his artistic director's good ideas. This deserves a long quote: “…if I wanted our relationship to work, I had to stay in the background. Let him take your ideas, only speak when the risk is low, only say what he wants to hear, and above all, the golden rule: never steal the spotlight. The dynamic he created around him boiled down to that. Songs like The Power of Love, Because You Loved Me, and It’s All Coming Back to Me Now were all monumental successes. These were all songs I brought to Céline, but I only got a fleeting glance, not even a toast in appreciation. I have to admit, it’s partly my fault. I never asked for anything because we were a team.” Let’s just say that, having had my share of trouble dealing with René Angélil during my career as a journalist, I was glad to read this. I find it courageous, because this honest, yet dissonant, testimony was missing from the fairy tale. I couldn't help but think of Francine Chaloult, Céline Dion's press agent in Quebec, who always gave the same answer when I asked her if she would ever write her memoirs: "If I did that, I'd have to get on a plane and disappear!" She actually died of Alzheimer's. Understandably, this bombshell doesn't detract from Céline's achievement, nor from the extraordinary and providential visibility that this success brought to Quebec. I read it as a cry from the heart. Vito Luprano brought someone into the world? Perhaps we should listen to him. 4 Quote http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v75/daveyh84/incognito198701_zpsaaootxh1.jpgRick, ik hou van jou voor altijd!A New Day... has come 28/29 April & 2/3 May 07Antwerpen 13 et 14 mai,Paris 24 et 25 mai, Amsterdam 2 juinet Arras 7 juillet Chances Taken!!!How Do You Keep The Music Playing? - Celine Opening Night March 15th, March 16th

I’m sorry lol. Saying that the Celinenununu “almost ruined her reputation” is so dramatic. It’s been said multiple times on this forum, and it’s laughable. It was barely a blip in her career. Only this forum even remembers it. This was not some worldwide scandal that she had to come back from. It was one commercial that barely aired anywhere. People really need to move on. 4 Quote https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL54qnRGM2gMatthew Charles - "Fix You" - Live at The Stonewall InnStonewall Sensation - Season 15Originally written and performed by Coldplay

After letting go of Vito,Céline's career was just fine, nothing really changed, she's still the Céline Dion everyone loves. But after Rene's passing,we all saw what happened,Céline's career has been a disaster since and that unnecessary children's cloth line almost destroyed her reputation Rene and herself had been building for decades...I miss Rene,if only God had given him 10 more years, things would've been so different for Céline and her career... This is strange because to me it is the opposite : A career like an athlete is not one person, it is a team, a lot of work but also luck and business connection. René and Céline was the perfect match but it also happened because of the professionals around, working "in the shadow". You say Celine career would have been the same, we will never know, but if Vito Luprano was the connection to David Foster, it made a huge difference ( funny to see that Davey84 and I had to come across the same interview today). If he was the one to push " Where does my heart beat now" to be on the album, it made a big difference too. I am okay that it was his job. But recognization is as important as money in a job, isn't it ? It's is true that René hold Céline as his sort of puppet. She was the artist he always wanted to be and lived the career he would have wanted for himself through Céline, but it is always nice to realize it is not a fairy tale but the result of hard work, talent, and tough business. When looking back at the beginning of her career, it is so obvious. I mean, okay René was broke ( his house was mortgaged longer before he met Celine 😉) but he wasn't a nobody and had such an address book !! Otherwise, you don't have the opportunity to sing for the first time in a very large audience show (Michel Jasmin) , you cannot have songs written by one of the greatest French songwriter ever ( Eddy Marnay), if you dont know how to meet him and so on. So René made Céline, but to me the end of her career comes with that Vegas stuff and René death did not hurry the decline. René would be alive, I don't think it would have be very different for Céline's career. I remember an interview of René, in the middle of the 90's, when Celine was at her top. He said that this is a normal process, when you rose and reached your top level then you will go down, decline because it is a cycle, like life is a cycle . And he was prepared to work on the "declining" part of Celine career and organize it. Life did not allowed him to do so. Edited February 17, 2026 at 07:05 PM by emiliejolie Quote

Here is the English translation: Thank you so much for this Davey. It’s hard sometimes to have access to this kind of information when I don’t understand French (although I have tried). Really interesting read. To be honest I always gathered that there was a team around Celine and not just Rene. Rene was sick in 99 and it was obvious that someone was running the show. Rene was in the spotlight because of his relationship with Celine. She was asked about him constantly in interviews and their relationship was celebrated. How many people know the managers and team of artists anyway unless you’re a big fan? What I do know is that Celine always thanked Rene and also her team for her success. Rene put himself forward as the face and leading force of the team. Kev x 1 Quote
