Celine's "I Surrender" needed an official topic where we could chat and express our thoughts about such an amazing song!

This song just may be the most popular, well known song that was (shockingly) never released as an official single, by ANY female artist in music history!

 

"I Surrender" has been proclaimed as one of Celine's best songs of her career by many, since the release of her timeless album "A New Day Has Come" in 2002. It is also considered one of the greatest ballads ever recorded. It's classic Celine in every way. It's got so many great aspects to the song- Big dramatic music that swells and builds through the song, amazing production, and jaw-dropping vocals from Celine! The song has some of the best versatility, and belted notes that she's ever served! Celine shows off so much of her impressive beautiful and powerful vocal range and abilities in this very loved, appreciated, and respected song!

 

Many fans over the years have expressed that if "I Surrender" would've been released as an official single, the iconic song would have VERY likely topped the music charts around the world! It had so much incredible potential to achieve mind-boggling success!

Was just listening to I Surrender tonight, still one of my favorite songs of all time!

 

Celine's vocal abilities are really on full display in this song, with one of Celine's greatest long belted notes of any song!

 

Even without ever being an official single, here's some charts that Celine's "I Surrender" has charted:

 

- reached the top 80 on the U.S. iTunes chart in 2020

- reached the top 50 on the Canadian iTunes chart in 2022

- reached #1 on the Malta iTunes chart in 2022!

- reached the top 70 on the Spanish iTunes chart in 2015

 

Also, the live performance of "I Surrender" from "A New Day..." is one of Celine's top 25 most viewed (out of about 400) videos on her official YouTube channel!

And, "I Surrender" is one of Celine's top 25 most streamed songs on Spotify (out of about 500 songs) with over 28 million streams!

Sorry For Love was ultimate single material. I will never get over the fact that it was not released as a single. I'm convinced that it would smash radio stations around the world, while Goodbye's went pretty much unnoticed. I hate the fact that they always choose to play it safe. Well, looking at the single choices from a conceptual perspective, making Goodbye's a single was a logical move. The first single ANDHC celebrated the birth of her son, the second single IA celebrated life with him, and the third would then celebrate her mom, the person who gave Celine life. So the single choices went full circle and that was probably the idea behind it.

 

But concept or not, I still think that SFL had the most potential to smash radios all around the world. Celine has never released a song like this before, and she sounded amazing on it. It suited her prefectly, and the sound and that long note was out of this world.

I believe RIFOY was supposed to be a single. It was on the sticker that was on the front of the album when you buy it as a featured title.

I wish David would have included an extended cut to this compilation. I wonder how long the song actually was without the fade-out? She clearly just kept going!

 

I have also always been confused by the credits of this song, because David Foster was never listed as a producer in the liner notes.

I've read somewhere that David could not be involved officially for some reason, so he wasn't credited... maybe he participated in the production anyways?

The album version of LTAL should absolutely have had a crash ending similar to the live version. Fading that out as the last song on the album was just a mistake.

But part of me agrees with the fading-out on the album, because it sounds like a never-ending experience... I can't explain very well what I want to say... but it's like the journey we begin with the first chords of The Reason go all through LTAL, and doesn't stops, it keeps going and going, never ending...

That being said, we should have a no fade-out of the song released somewhere, as a single, or even in this compilation with David...

I always imagined an amazing music video for "I Surrender" if it would've been released as a single. Something big, dramatic, and epic, like Celine looking absolutely stunning, walking outside in the moonlight in a beautiful flowing dress, singing the song as she walks by a lake, simmering in the moonlight, and then she walks up a hill, and finishes the climax of the song on top of the hill that overlooks a lit up city, with her hair blowing in the breeze! It's nice to dream

Amazing choices for what the singles should have been from "A New Day Has Come"! This is exactly my thoughts too!

 

I loved that the first two singles were "A New Day Has Come", and then "I'm Alive", and if "I Surrender" would've been the next single, the song would have probably hit #1 by the end of 2002/early 2003 worldwide, especially on Adult Contemporary charts! I've always been so confused why "Team Celine" didn't release "I Surrender", and "Sorry For Love". HUGE missed opportunity for epic success for both songs!

Just saw that when you search for Celine on Apple Music, "I Surrender" is one of the "top songs" listed in the very first set of Celine's songs! Makes me wonder what the total streaming number is on Apple Music for the song

Since "I Surrender" has over 28 million streams on Spotify, my guess is that the streaming total is likely the same on Apple Music, if not higher, which would be VERY impressive for sure!
