Netflix has a new documentary series about pop music called "This is Pop".

To be honest i was expecting more references on 90's era, at least on one of the episodes.

 

But from 90's they only talked about boybands, some dance songs and the start of the autotune use. (Cher - Believe)

 

Despite of there were several topics that Celine could be mentioned (Las vegas, Eurovision, melismas etc) that didnt happen.

 

The only time that Celine was just mentioned (twice) was about the songwriters / producers from Sweden that have collab with many artists worldwide.

I have to say, even though there weren't a lot of clips of Max Martin himself, they did talk about his massive influence on pop music of the 2000s. It really drove home how much credit he deserves for ANDHC and One Heart. Those are two of my favourite songs from that era, as well as You and I & Ain't Gonna Look the Other Way. They all are produced so beautifully, and even the ballads have a lightness to them that makes them not sad and depressing. I have to say, even though there weren't a lot of clips of Max Martin himself, they did talk about his massive influence on pop music of the 2000s. This just shows that it is time to invest in self-promotion and career management. A new documentary, DVD with concerts filmed but still unedited, a duet with a young but relevant artist (like Celine and Barbra in 1997)... are just a few examples of what can be done.

 

I'm afraid we're just going to see more concerts in Las Vegas... that's all. And quickly, all the smash hits that made Celine Dion a worldwide phenomenon from 1995 to 1999 are forgotten.

 

Do you know that Chanel was not the most successful designer of her time? It was Schiaparelli! Chanel knew how to take advantage of the post-war period and created a brand that will last. The other still exists but has not managed to maintain its relevance.

We don't want the same for Celine! She has to find someone who knows how to manage her career to keep it fabulous and eternal!

It was cool how in the trailer, 3 of the people they were interviewing worked directly with Celine. Shania, Babyface, and Linda Perry.

 

I think Celine's legacy on pop music will be 1) big vocals, vocal pop, Vocal Trinity 2) celebrating emotional songs and ballads 3) globalising music, not only by singing in both languages but just being a gloabl ambassador for music 4) an example of someone who can be successful in pop without using sex in their image 5) as simply one of the biggest pop stars there has ever been, and one of the few with great longevity

The only issue is that Celine, herself, doesn't seem to want that for herself. A tiny percent of hardcore fans want that for themselves. But Celine...she wants to do shows in Vegas, tour every once in a while, and relax. She worked like a horse for over 30 years. She's earned a more relaxing 30 years to be the back end of her life.

Celine probably doesn’t even know that’s happening. I can guarantee she doesn’t care. She’s laughing all the way to the bank.

 

I also don’t think she’s in any danger of her career dying. She’s becoming a touring artist. Not a recording artist. I don’t think she cares about topping charts. Only the fans care about they. I honestly think if her career ended, she wouldn’t care. She never has to work a day in her life and she and her family will be just fine.

They are preparing something like the vegas shows and courage tour but it’s not like before where we can see her everywhere. Doing more tv appearances and I understand since she’s getting older she wants to spend more time with her family because all of her life since she was a little kid.

She’s always busy. Give this time for her to spend more with her family. What she did since she was a little kid is very tiring. She needs to relax more.

 

She is still a human.

 

Look at Rihanna, Adele and many young artists who takes more time to rest in show/music business. Because if they did what Céline did (especially in this generation who get easily tired) I don’t know what will happen. Actually, the fans of the said singers are waiting longer than us Céline fans. Imagine how many years did Rihanna or Adele released their last album?

There are soooooo many heritage artists who hardly release any new music - if any at all - but quite happily tour whenever they feel like it and will always have a guaranteed audience for their "all the hits and nothing too challenging" shows. While it's certainly not the kind of career into which I want Céline to settle at this point - she's still young, vital, and capable of producing well done, entertaining, contemporary music - it's certainly an option for her if she no longer has the drive or desire to keep plugging along with ever-diminishing returns. She's never going to lose her built-in audience, and she could easily release a new "event" record (lower-case) every decade or so and be quite happy.

 

It's kind of funny from a dispassionate perspective - having revitalized Vegas and proven that an ongoing residency didn't have to be a last resort career killer, she may very well end up settling into just that kind of old-school Vegas career and stay there for decades. And she'll still make bank doing so!

Guys stop the Drama. Celine won't be forgotten anytime soon or after she retires. She is way too popular. Whitney Houston is gone, Michael Jackson too and people still listen to their music and do know them.
