He is still making money off of it today (not as much as when it first came out but still enough). Celine removing it isn't going to cut the song out completely because he wrote and produced it (?), it's still in his repertoire and his streaming apparently. But it makes it so she isn't contributing anything to him, less money in his pocket. It's to show some support for the victims of his abuse.

 

And the movement is #MuteRKelly after all.

 

It's also still a part of one of her albums so the song isn't being erased completely.

This could be a good time to remove the song from the digital version of “These Are Special Times” and add “I Met An Angel (On Christmas Day)” in its place. Problem solved. As for ATW, put “Misled” in its place to accompany the DVD edition. Add “Misled” to the U.S. version of ML and remove IYA. Problem solved. (So long as the contracts wouldn’t be a pain.)

I disagree - this is much more meaningful and appropriate than a statement.

 

It absolutely is about not continuing to fund him - as a songwriter, performer and producer on this, he's probably collecting hefty royalties from it - much higher than Celine.

 

This may be a surprise to you, but there's serious money in music publishing - a songwriter is entitled to mechanical, performance, sync royalties from sometimes as many as 500k sources. Meanwhile, if you're just a performer on a track, you don't even get royalties collected by ASCAP/ BMI/ SESAC if a song is played on the radio (at least in the US - recording artists are entitled to them elsewhere). So, if IYA is played on terrestrial radio in the US, R Kelly gets performance royalties, Celine doesn't.

 

Music publishing royalties (i.e. those payable to songwriters & composers) are very stable and predictable cash flows - almost bond-like - which is why so many private equity funds like them and invest in music publishers. The publishing side of the music business was doing just fine even as recording was cratering.

 

Even songs you've never heard of can make thousands of $ a month in royalties - every time a pub, grocery store, karaoke bar plays an oldie, every time it's sampled, covered on social media or some TV show, every time Celine sings it in LV, ever time it's streamed, etc., the songwriter makes royalty $.

Every time a copy of a song is made (note made, it doesn't have to be sold), and that includes if a copy is made on some server with intention for download, not just a physical copy, the songwriter gets mechanical royalties. Often for decades to come.

 

In any case - for a hit song, this can all add up to a lot of $ for the songwriter, even for old catalog songs. Take for instance The Dream (who wrote Skies of LA for Celine), and who recently sold 75% of his back catalogue for $24mln - that's a $31mln valuation for just his songwriting royalties. Entirely passive income; as a songwriter, you just sit there and collect for years to come. If a song is synced often - i.e. used in visual media, video games, commercials, etc - that's often a significant incremental upside as well.
