Incognito

So, I was thinking about the song Incognito. My understanding about this song is that she's basically saying she wants to start over somewhere new where no one knows her name. At the time she recorded the song, this could have been interpreted as her wanting to launch her English career as we were just learning who she was with WDMHBN.

However, considering her recent break perhaps this song was foreshadowing something bigger, unknown at the time. It's been said by several people within the industry, David Foster included, that when she's done she'll just be done. That's it. And she'll simply walk away. One of the lines/phrases in the song, roughly translated, says "I hate turning my back on you (or I don't want to turn my back on you?) but I want to go somewhere I'm not known and start over again". At this point in time, that could possibly be her way of saying, I don't want to turn my back on you (fans) but I want to start over again, start fresh/new. She's even said all she wants to do, primarily, is to be a mom. This could be her way of starting over again. (Whether it be just to be a mom or reinvent herself later) She's even, apparently, cut her hair so we don't instantly recognize her as her and ventured out to Wal-Mart, attempting some sort of normalcy.

Granted she's Celine (and long hair or short; red, blonde, or brown) she'd be hard pressed to find anywhere in this world where she's not recognized-even if not immediately upon first glance (which could also be what she's going for if she did indeed cut her hair-could also be a sign she knows she's going to be out of the bright lights for a bit).

Now, I'm not saying she's done altogether at this exact point in time but perhaps these are all signs of things to come. Perhaps to help preserve her voice so she's on point vocally when she does perform? Definitely to dedicate more time to her family. At any rate, just wanted to share. I'm sure this wasn't the initial intent of this song when it was recorded but it's amazing to me how certain songs are so on point with future events, etc. I do so love this song! It's one of my many faves of hers!!

Could also be that when she comes back (SOON) she's gonna be rocking an IACBTM / BYLM hair stylings, which is to be honest the greatest era of Celine hair  I think big hair is maybe out for the near future, but that's good - it's a sign that she is turning the page on being a diva and returning to her roots.

David Foster doesn't know what he's talking about - Celine Dion will never walk away from show business, for the same reason people like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, and Judy Garland never did / will ... she IS show business, and whatever she does will neccesarily be a spectacle to a certain extent. What she will probably do, and may be in the process of doing right now, is abandon the image she has created for herself. I feel very strongly that Celine will end up in her later years a kind of Elaine Stritch figure, impervious to any pressure to conform. She may decide to sing only in French, she might decide to release an album of folk or jazz standards once every five years, but she will probably live to be a 120 and will continue singing until the end.

Not really. Quite scary. Put a wrning label on topics like this. NO, kidding, LOL you did. I don't think the songs are related, though can see why it seems they are. I do not see her as a diva in the bad sense. Like, they are women who are so obviously divas, in the vein, arrogant sense. she's not. She's a legendary diva because of her career, and she also has this "woman/mother next door" image too. I agree, she can never truly walk away, it is in her. I can't see her leaving, if god forbid she does decide to be all done all together, at least do a farewell album/tour or at the very very least, say something. She knows how many fans she has and what a bitter pill to swallow her total complete retirement would be. She probably feels she owes it to us to at least say, this is it, I'm done, etc. And, if she did decide to sing solely in French, I'd be more than okay with that. That's really who she is.

Christina, I couldn't agree more. I think she really enjoy the stage, she just needed a step back. I think we all would have. Not necessarily from everything, but from some things. I think she would say "this is it. Fans, I'm retiring." I think she might still be in some shows though. ;) but if she's onlt in french, I'm not mad if that happened. She's still got 25 years of English material, too, but she's French, she's so much more connected in French.

As for the topic of the Incognito thing. What a unique view, I know I wouldn't have thought of that. Such a different outlook. But to some extent, it does make sense. I think she's having one of those long thoughts with herself just pondering everything. Maybe she wanted to make a change. I'm fine with the hair, it's still brownish brunette. I think she'll come back, maybe she's just thinking of what she wants to do. Who knows, maybe she just wants to come back, but maybe she doesn't know when. I'm behind her with whatever she wants. :)

I don't think she will quit "for good".

I rather think that she may let a few years between albums and tours and be less active in the show business world.

I agree. I think this is the pace she'll scale back to when she's tired of the current schedule, etc.

Although I do think she'll retire at some point. Idon't see her performingwhen she's 70 or 80. Maybe the occasional appearance here and there if anything.

I've had similar thoughts about other songs...

When I first heard Je ne vous oublie pas I thought she was going to announce her goodbye.

My Love had me worried... Very bittersweet and seems to me to be about her personal sacrifices and living life in the public eye, particularly the part where she sings "I would share my whole life with you... I would give all I am to you..."

I think Céline, quite rightly, sees singing as a job and a commitment and something she just has to do. Her main priority is trying to lead a stable, secure, normal life in which to bring up her kids. Pretty hard when you're Céline Dion.

She's been known to tell would-be singers not to pin all their hopes on singing... Suggested that if she had her time again, she wouldn't be a singer... And seems genuinely uncomfortable with the idea that people worship her because of her voice. She lives within an industry that is unpredictable, cruel, fickle and has seen how fame an make and quite easily break people.

She is not naive. She owes the business a great deal and is genuinely thankful and loyal to her fans. But she is human... She is more than a name with an amazing voice and seems to resist the idea that she is infallible because she can hold a note.

Céline is and always be a singer. But in becoming a mother and achieving some stability, she has seen there is much more to life than the next hit or award. Given half a chance, I think she would genuinely walk away from it all. The pressure to maintain her faultless singing voice. The pressure of living in the public light. The unbearable responsibility of satisfying millions of fans around the world and disproving critics.

I hate to admit it but I sincerely believe Céline would walk away right now. Maybe not forever. It's her livelihood. It's been her whole life. But for a very long time.

@TonyBower my thoughts exactly. It's amazing how so many of her songs seem to signify so many different thingsdepending on the listener's interpretation. I agree that I think when she's ready she will just walk away. I think out of respect for the fans there will be some sort of announcement. Maybe a final farewell tour/show.
