Couple Claims Winnings After Losing Ticket One story is how the winning ticket ended up in the trash, the other is what pop singer Celine Dion had to do with the couple claiming their prize, WLKY NewsChannel 32's Steve Burgin reported Wednesday. The fiasco began shortly after the June 29 drawing when Paul Daniels mistakenly read the numbers and tossed the ticket into the trash. The next day, his wife, Carol, heard on TV that the winning ticket had been purchased in Danville, Burgin reported. "So, I got the garbage can, set it up on the sink and got me another garbage bag and I found it," Paul Daniels said. Singer Celine Dion is the reason the Daniels didn't immediately rush to Louisville to claim their money. She had a concert in Las Vegas and the Daniels' had tickets. They also spent some time gambling while they were there. "I told the dealer out there and the man I was playing with, 'You know, I won the Kentucky Lottery last week,'" Paul Daniels said. "They said 'Yeah, and that's why you are playing $5.'" The Daniels' said they have plans for the money. Carol had problems holding back the tears just talking about it, Burgin reported. "We have two sons, eight grandchildren, and six teenage grandchildren who are looking at college," Carol Daniels said. Added Paul Daniels: "There will be a trust fund for our grandkids to go to school." Carol is the principal at Mercer County Elementary School, and Paul retired from the Kentucky School for the Deaf.
