First Time

HI - I just wondered how all of you first discovered this wonderful woman.

I was introduced to her and her music by a friend of mine. He played me Think Twice when it was first released thinking I would not like it because I am a jazz/blues/ rock nutter.

How wrong he was - I have been in love with Celine since then.

First time was in 1992 when I heard IYAMT. Introduced to her in 1996 by listening to a Casey Kasem countdown show. From then on I was a fan. Edited by Prima_Donna1

First time 1988: She sang at Eurovision and I liked her and hoped she would win. And she did!

Second time: 1991: She had a top 40 hit here with where Does My Heart Beat Now. Loved the song a lot.

Third time: 1992: She had a top 40 hit with Beauty And The Beast and my favorite magazine wrote her album was better than Whitney's and Mariah's last ones, which I both loved. I was also someone who loved to follow the charts and noticed Celine was in the Billboard Top 10 with If You Asked Me To. I finally thought it was time to check her out and went to the shop to listen to the album. I was blown away, bought it and after that bought everything I could lay my hands on.

The first time i saw her on TV in 93/94, the Power of Love MV in Sunday music progam on national TV, and i can't wait to see her again the next week, at the time foreign music program only once a week, and the next week they play "Love Lights Of The World" the i instantly became her fans. I don't know if her music ever play in national tv before because we have no tv before. Maybe i will become a fans earlier if i saw her earlier :-D

Spring 1998 in a movie theater during the end credits of Titanic. (First time I consciously heard of her, later on I discovered I'd heard a few songs on the radio before, not knowing it was Céline :))

At the start of 2006 I had the Titanic song stuck in my head, so decided to download it on iTunes, but I didn't know anything about the singer. Then just a few days later I happened to see the Air Canada commercial featuring You And I, and I absolutely loved the song! After typing in what I heard of the lyrics on Google I found that this was also by Celine Dion - such a big coincidence! That was the moment I became a fan, and it just grew and grew from there :) Edited by Timster

I remember her in french TV shows in the '80s and in the early '90s but she was one among many others at the time and as a kid you get confused easily !

Later I heard "Calling You" (live) at the radio, I can still remember very precisely the moment, and a few days later in my family we got an offer from a CD & book club, some kind of shop you had to buy at least one item every month, and I picked "Celine Dion à l'Olympia" remembering I heard the song at the radio, because nothing else in the list would interest me.

I loved the CD (I remember saying "Oh...she is the same girl that sings this "Power of Love" song !".

And a few months later, "D'Eux" was released and she became a huge star in France very quickyl. I remember I used to say very proudly to my school friends "No no she is not a new singer ! I have one of her CDs ! And she sings in English too !".

So many good memories !

As I said in my original post, I am primarily a blues/jazz fan and still perform in a band playing this type of music. My band mates still think it's amusing that I absolutely adore this woman.

Still, I guess if they don't get it, it's their loss not mine.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Oh, to my eternal shame I have never managed to see Celine live yet but I will!!

Wow. I love this topic. I had no idea we had some new fans in here, too. I am also a musician, like the person who created this topic. I also heard her on a Kasey Kasum count-down, in fact, I can't believe he's no longer with us. Anyway, it was My heart Will Go On, then To Love you more, I'm Your Angel, and then, Because You Loved me during one of those infamous long-distance dedications. For my 16th birthday, my dad bought me the LTAL album and I have been totally hooked ever since!

When it became clear it was between Celine and Scott Fitzgerald, I was really hoping for Celine.

Most Dutch people were hoping for Scott to win as he had a #1 hit here with the Dutch singer Yvonne Keeley.

I was so HAPPY when Celine won. Loved her right there from the start.

Don't take it personally that she beat you by one point. She would have done it to everyone, not just you guys. Oh wait, she did, LOL. I'm sure you've done well in years since though!

Lol not taken personally!

We did ok for a few years after. Won and a few second places too.

Actually I'm glad she won. Comparing her song and ours now, celine's was so much better!

It's great isn't - this talented, lovely lady is able cross boundaries of age and sex.

Once again, thanks to everybody or their contributions

I remember hearing her songs and knowing who she was since 1992 probably, and I liked her but that was it.

But it was only in 1996 that I fell in love with Because You Loved Me and got a cassette tape of FIY. I fell so hard.

In 1997 I saw her performance on the Academy Awards and my love for her was only growing and growing.

Back then we didn't have easy access to the internet, so I taped Live in Memphis when it aired here in Brazil and I watched it everyday for months.

And then MHWGO happened and there was no turning back. How wonderful it was to be a fan of someone who was the queen of the world at the time. She was everywhere. Good times.

But only after I became a die-hard fan I found out there were so many songs I loved and didn't know they were Celine's.

I first heard her for the first time on the radio on a vacation with my parents, I back then was still a huge fan of Madonna. however hearing the song Des Mots Qui Sonnent was a huge twist in my life. I bought the album of Céline and the whole vacation it never left my Walkman. I think on that vacation I just got the Celine virus in my system and it never left, in fact it only grew stronger. But it was not the first time I heard her sing, as a kid I always watched the Eurovision song contest and I'm sure I saw her on the telly but never knowing I would become a fan a few years later.

First time was when Titanic came out, I knew the song by heart eventhough I did not know a single word of English and had no idea at all was the song was about !!!

Then 2002 when my best friend made me listen to "I'm alive" while with my class we went to a museum, the week after was my birthday and with the money I received I bought ANDHC and SSDA together.

I think there's no shame in coming to her through Titanic. That's the song that does it for a lot of people.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply to my question.

As I said earlier, it seems this lovely lady has a wide fan base from different generations.

And that is the way it should be with talent and grown up music!
