SuperLove4Celine Posted June 6, 2014 at 05:12 PM Posted June 6, 2014 at 05:12 PM Celine and Andrea Bocelli were both recently mentioned in an article regarding abortion: And it turns out the Celine Dion too was almost a victim of abortion. According to EWTN news: Canadian music star Celine Dion has said that she credits her family’s parish priest for convincing her mother not to abort her. Dion said her mother was initially devastated when she learned she was pregnant with Celine, the 14th child in the family, and she asked the priest if she could have an abortion. The priest upheld the teachings of the Catholic Church and told her that she could not abort her child. “He told her that she had no right to go against nature,” she said. “So I have to admit that in a way, I owe my life to that priest. Dion added, “Once she got over her disappointment, my mother didn’t waste any time on self-pity, and loved me as passionately as she’d loved the last little one.” Source: http://www.lifenews....ms-of-abortion/ Quote
chocolatechip15 Posted June 6, 2014 at 05:30 PM Posted June 6, 2014 at 05:30 PM From every story I heard, Therese asked the priest if she could use birth control, not if she could have an abortion. The actual quotes say nothing about abortion. I think the article is wrong. 5 Quote

NicoNV Posted June 6, 2014 at 06:46 PM Posted June 6, 2014 at 06:46 PM (edited) I remember an interview where Celine said that her mother wanted to terminate the pregnancy. I don't remember which one it was but its on YouTube somewhere. Yes, I remember hearing this as well. I believe it was on Parkinson maybe (the BBC talk show)? But, I could be wrong about the interview. I know that in her Lifetime Bio, she said that her mother "did not want," and then she was starts to say "me" but corrected herself and said the pregnancy. That video is on YouTube. I think the show was called "Lifetime Intimate Portrait." I just remember that so clearly because it made me think about how her mom may have explained it to her when she was older. But, I have heard both versions of the story. Frankly speaking, I seem to recall hearing both versions during different interviews Celine Dion has given herself (so the above call to legal action would be highly unlikely, since she is the source of both stories). The details she gives do sound, more often than not, like her mother was asking about abortion. Edited June 6, 2014 at 06:49 PM by NicoNV 3 Quote

Yes, they've always been open about her mother not wanting the pregnancy (even in that first bio, published when she was about 14, so they must have told her the story when she was quite young) . . . but there's a difference between not wanting a pregnancy and actually seeking an abortion. In terms of going to the priest -- I'd only heard about birth control. This is such an intensely personal thing that it feels weird to be discussing it at all on an Internet message board -- I just don't think they should publish something like that without having a firm source. 1 Quote
chocolatechip15 Posted June 7, 2014 at 03:25 AM Posted June 7, 2014 at 03:25 AM (edited) From My Story, My Dream: "My mother had gone so far as to see the parish priest to ask him if she could 'stop having children,' as they said at the time, which meant using contraceptives. At the time the priests of Quebec had a lot of authority. This one began preaching to her. He told her she didn't have the right to defy nature. My mother was furious. So was I, when she told me the story. But at the same time, I have to admit that, in a way, I owe my life to that priest." (p. 24). They appear to be using the quote from this book, since it's almost identical language. If so, they're wrong to say Therese sought an abortion. It sounds like Therese found a nice way to soften the story, and clearly Celine felt very loved throughout he childhood. Edited June 7, 2014 at 03:34 AM by chocolatechip15 Quote

Edit: I initially posted an entire response, but why? I stand by what I wrote earlier, as it was based upon interviews she has given herself. I know I am not the only person who heard these interviews (as evidenced by the fact CelineDIVO5 brought them up first). The only thing I will say is that no one questioned she was loved, so I am confused why that point was even made. Either way, I agree it's a personal topic to discuss on a message board. But, the thread was started in response to an article, and the article was based upon her own stories and interviews. No one had an issue with attacking the story, or those who wrote it. Accordingly, I do not feel my comments were off base. Attacking the article would bring it just as much attention as clarification. My comments were only intended to clarify or at least attempt to clarify the issue: there appears to be two versions of this story, both of which have been told by Celine Dion. chocolatechip15 Posted June 7, 2014 at 03:56 AM Posted June 7, 2014 at 03:56 AM Like CelineDIVO5, I have heard her give interviews, where she discusses and uses facts that indicate that her mother went to the priest to seek guidance about ending the pregnancy. She did not state in those interviews her mother sought guidance because she did not want to get pregnant (birth control), but instead said things like her mother went to the priest because she did not want the pregnancy. If I get the chance, I will look them up later (frankly, I just do not feel like spending time doing it right now). I do not believe her mother sought an abortion, so your statement on that point is a bit off--neither I nor CelineDIVO5 stated she sought an abortion. I have never heard her mother actually sought an abortion. What I had heard was that her mother had gone to the priest to discuss not wanting the pregnancy and seeking advice about that (in short, seeking advice about ending the pregnancy, i.e. abortion). That does not mean she sought one out. Nico, I wasn't saying your comments were off-base at all, and it's always interesting discuss issues with people on here. Nor I do think it would be helpful for Celine's team to officially attack this article. What bothers me is the article itself . . and in general when journalists take quotes from celebrities and twist them to serve their own purposes. This article appears to be saying Therese sought an abortion (It says "she asked the priest if she could have an abortion.") It seems to be based on what Celine wrote in My Story, My Dream, since the quote is so close -- and if that's where they're getting the story from, I don't think they should have written it -- because it's such a personal thing, that I don't think it should be written about someone unless that person has chosen to share it, and they've gotten it from a credible source. My annoyance was directed at the author of the article, not anyone on here. Quote
chocolatechip15 Posted June 7, 2014 at 04:04 AM Posted June 7, 2014 at 04:04 AM Edit: I initially posted an entire response, but why? I stand by what I wrote earlier, as it was based upon interviews she has given herself. I know I am not the only person who heard these interviews (as evidenced by the fact CelineDIVO5 brought them up first). The only thing I will say is that no one questioned she was loved, so I am confused why that point was even made. I was just responding to what you wrote about her comment in the Lifetime Intimate Portrait sticking with you, and wondering how her mom explained the story to her. I've wondered it, too -- because it's a pretty harsh thing for someone - especially a young person - to know about her own history. And I remember watching that Lifetime show with my own mom years ago, and still remember my mom remarking on how tough it must be to think that your mother didn't want to be pregnant with you. So I was just responding with my own thoughts on how that happened -- that the way Therese told the story must have softened it a lot, by saying how much she fell in love with baby Celine the moment the nurse placed her in her arms, and that Celine always felt loved in her childhood. (I wasn't saying *you* were questioning Celine's having been loved, but that something like knowing your mother didn't want you to be born could make you question her love, but it didn't seem to in Celine's case, because she already felt so loved.). I didn't mean to make you feel that you were being criticized, and I apologize if I did so. Sometimes things get lost in translation on these boards. Quote

You obviously don't know Celine if you say you can never be sure if she ever did an abortion or tried!!!!!!!! Well, no actually, it's not that I 'don't know her'. But i expected this kind of reaction, cuz the topic of abortions is very delicate and my question was pretty much straightforward. I don't think she ever used the option but in life sometimes we play and break the rules so i keep my mind open for any kinds of situations. P.S. Celine is a very open person and i love it but who would say she's got no secrets?? I mean, fans are aware that we don't know everything about her, right?? 6 Quote Love comes to those who believe it...
