but banning "bossy" word?

Feminism is good, but i think there are much worst things to care about than the word bossy.

I might be wrong but isn't this word in the dictionary? Synonymous for authoritarian??? Anyone can be bossy not just men. My cat is bossy!

The campaign is not against the word itself, but against the idea that you never hear anyone call a boy bossy, and that when girls show assertiveness or try to be leaders, it's tamped down by calling them "bossy." I'm not sure I agree with it entirely -- and of course there are times, as in that article Zuv linked, when children are legitimately being bossy and need to be taught that they can't just order others around.

 

But it's true that, in our culture, you almost never hear a boy called bossy, and I think it's worth thinking about why. I don't think it's ridiculous at all.

I understand what you're saying -- but the point of this campaign is not whether people are able to handle being called bossy. The point is that little girls are regularly scolded for being "bossy" while little boys are not. When is the last time you heard a little boy being called "bossy"? Why do we, as a culture, discourage assertive behavoir in girls when we don't do so in boys? These are questions that are worth thinking about.

Banning a word or censoring things is absolutly not the way to go. I would rather teach kids to tell their haters "to f**k off and then move on" instead of trying to censore people all the time.

I actually agree that banning the word is not the appropriate response. I just think that Beyonce et al are trying to draw attention to an interesting issue that deserves thought and discussion.

While my first thought was that this was just another PC campaign I have given this some thought (prior to seeing the video) and all my female bosses have gained a reputation for being bossy, opinionated or a *CENSORED*. I have never worked with a man who has gotten that reputation despite often similar characteristics. As an example in pop culture you could never make a movie like the Devil Wears Prada with a man being the boss, that kind of behavior would be considered completely normal.

I do, however, feel that banning the word bossy has nothing to do with women in leadership positions, most my female bosses have told me they just suck it up and it comes with the territory. That girls don't feel like they can take on leadership positions from a young age has more to do with how others treat them (including how other women treat each other) rather than the word bossy. E.g. women are told not to aspire for the same jobs that men do. Ive met several women, including my mother, who've been told when applying for med school "why become a doctor when you can marry one?". I think it is this kind of thinking that needs to stop.
