A Russian Neo-Nazi group is targeting gay youths by luring them into 'dates' through fake personals ads then subjecting them to humiliation, torture and abuse, which is filmed and posted online.

 

The Spectrum Human Rights Alliance, which campaigns for lesbian, bisexual, gay and transsexual rights in Eastern Europe, claims that the 'Occupy Pedophilyaj' and 'Occupy Gerontilyaj' groups set up by far-right leader Maxim Martsinkevich place personal advertisements on Russia's equivalent of Facebook: VK.com.

Martsinkevich, whose nickname is 'Cleaver' or 'Tesak', ostensibly set-up the 'Occupy' groups to target paedophiles and those responsible for other sex crimes, but the SHRA says their focus is on committing homophobic violence.

When victims show up for a meeting they are confronted by gang members and subjected to interrogations and abuse.

"These self-proclaimed 'crime fighters' perform their actions in broad daylight, often outside and clearly visible to a general public that indifferently passes by or even commends them," writes the SHRA on its website.

 

One video posted on YouTube shows a teenager being bullied and attacked in what appears to be a Russian housing estate.

The youth is asked a long series of questions by the group, and made to reveal that he is 15, and is responding to an advert from 'Uncle Dima' for a date.

Though initially adopting a friendly manner, the group's behaviour becomes more threatening. One member steps out of shot briefly and returns with a bottle filled with what appears to be urine which the ringleader pours over the youth's head. Another then kicks the teenager before the video cuts out.

"Video recordings of bullying and tortures are freely distributed on the internet in order to out LGBT teens to their respective schools, parents and friends. Many victims were driven to suicides, the rest are deeply traumatised," said the SHRA.

Russian online newspaper Lenta recently asked members of a cell in the Urals why they carried out the attacks.

"We do not like homosexuals. If it was up to me, I'd kill them but the government doesn't allow that," the Huffington Post quoted a member as saying.

"I think practically all gay men -- paedophiles," he later explained. "Once you've crossed over once, you can cross over again. Today he likes boys, and then it'll be children. They're not suitable for life in society."

Recently, Russian president Vladimir Putin has been criticised for encouraging a climate of homophobia in the country when he passed the so-called 'homosexual propaganda bill' outlawing teaching minors about homosexuality.

Yes, I'm russian. And to make a long story short, all this situation is extremely sad. If I may be honest I gotta tell you such cases are just everywhere, it's just horrible. That's why me and my husband plan to escape, you know, But it's pretty hard, you know. Cuz first we have to choose where to go. And what to do. Cuz seriously - nobody wants to wash disehes all their lives and we have nobody abroad so... It would be nice just to have someone to talk to when we're already NOT here.

I know what you guys talk about. The situation here in Bulgaria is pretty much the same. Gay people are considered to be 'different', 'not normal' and other (even worse) things... I'm not homo- or bisexual but I support your cause with all my heart and soul. In fact, 'there isn't very much that I could do but I would if I could'!

Yes, Bell, I heard Bulgaria isn't like the most gay friednly country out there as well. I do hope that in the nearest future things will change better for us and by 'us' I don't mean the homophobic countries and all the frustrating anti-gay laws, I mean me and my partner. It's not an option to sit on our sexy butts and wait till the situation changes, you know. So... We'll see.
