I'm sure most (or at least a lot of us) have heard the song "Tire L’aiguille". It's definately one of her most errr....shall we say "unique" song. I remember when I got all her old school albums back when I was a teenager like 10 years ago or something, and I was exercising in my basement, which I did all the time back then. I remember my dad (who knows not to bother me when I'm exercising) actually had to ask me...."Jeff.....what the hell are you listening to?"

 

It's definately a VERY weird song. It almost sounds like something you would hear at a Bar Mitzvah! I'm just wondering what everyone thinks of this song. While it may be unique....I'm really not crazy about it. I think it might be one of her worst songs ever. What do you guys think about it? Oh...and incase you haven't heard it yet...

It's a cover anyway And if I had to choose I'd really pick older versions cuz with all my love I gotta say Celine's version is pretty much... 'Unique' Though I'm no big fond of this generally. Still older versions sound more acceptable

It is definitely a weird song! It's about 'pulling the needle' to make the wedding dress for her friend, who is getting married the next morning. Maybe getting married was already on her mind then! What ever possesed them to include this song to her debut album? The only reason I can think of, is that Eddy Marnay wrote it... It has never been a favourite of mine. I think it dangles below on my Céline's songs list together with I hate you then I love you

I actually kind of like it. Never heard it before! I can see it being played at a wedding, like Hava Nagila or The Chicken Dance!

 

She has so many brothers and sisters maybe it was for on of them?

Even "Tire l'aiguille" sounds strange, I find it somehow cute. Sounds russian little bit. I wouldn't put it on bottom of my list especially It's hard to compare it with her recent songs.

 

Concerning "L'univers s besoin d'amour", this is definitely one of her weirdest songs. What is even more strange is that it was released as a single with a different version as a b-side.

 

It always sounded to me as a song from some cartoon soundtrack or something. Like it was made for some kind of project for kids. I never knew what was its purpose. It's one of the biggest misteries in her discography lol.

Wikipedia says that 'Refuse To Dance' is a song by Charlie Dore (never heard of her, BTW) who's apparently the songwriter (she also produced 'Rain, Tax' for Celine, it says). But... Charlie's version (the original according to Wikipedia) was officially released in 1995. And Celine released hers in 1993 on TCOML album, right? So I wouldn't call it a cover. Charlie Dore, the writer of the song, recorded the song but it wasn't until 1995 it was placed on album. Celine's is indeed a cover of the song, it was recorded after Dore's original version was out.

I kind of like it, too . . .it sounds like a folk song, and I think it works in that context. Yes, it would be really weird if she sang it in Vegas, but I think it works for a 12 year old recording her first album. And I like the way it gets really fast at the end, as though they're sewing really fast.

I needed to make this clear for myself so last night I contacted Charlie on her official website and asked the question. Here's a part of her reply:

 

the original was recorded by me as a demo, which I sent to Chris Neil, one of Celine's producers, in 1992. He played it to Celine and she decided to record it.

I then recorded my own 1995 album, Things Change, and included a slightly re-vamped version of my earlier demo. So both parts of the information (she means that Celine's version is and is not a cover at the same time) are accurate really.

Refuse To Dance is not a cover. If a demo or an earlier version by the author was recorded before Céline's version, but was never released nor publicly available until 1995, Céline's own version is the first one ever. To my eyes, that's the first version and then, the original one. And what a great song it is❤❤❤

The 'alien' vocals are just out of this world! if it was part of a movie, I'd understand, but this was a total one off!

I'd sooooo love to ask Céline about the purpose of these weird old releases! I doubt she even remembers them!

I had somehow never heard "Tire l'aguille" before a few days ago. It's definitely unique and unusual, but still kind of fun, all things considered.

 

And "Refuse to Dance" remains a favorite for me, partly because it is so different for Celine.
