Celine ranked in Billboard's Top Summer Songs 1985-2012

<p>Billboard has made a special countdown of the Top 10 summer songs for every year since 1985, and "Because You Loved Me" has enough points to make it at number 9 for 1996.

That was the year I fell in love with Celine! I'd heard and liked the big songs on the radio before then (BATB, WIFIL, TPOL), but I never paid attention to who was singing them. Then, in summer of '96, I thought BYLM was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard, and when IACBTMN came out in the fall, I adored that one, too, and finally connected the name with the voice . . and the insane fanhood began! The irony is that Because You Loved Me spent 6 weeks at #1 in the US selling over 1.6 million physical copies in 1996: bigger than almost every song before it on that list!

Well, I'm not sure what weeks Billboard used to compile this chart, but if they started late June, BYLM had already peaked, so this position has to do with its charting weeks in the summer of 96. Had it been a spring chart, it would have possibly ranked at number one. Also, its performance on the Airplay chart also helped this peak, as BYLM spent 14 weeks at number one. I remember being so mad when BYLM dropped from the top and I read on Billboard that it happened because Sony had stopped producing retail singles. Had it been widely available a few more weeks, I think it would have given Macarena a run for its money as the longest-running number one for 96.

I think the Billboard article said they were measuring from Memorial Day (late May) to Labor Day (early September).
