How have you organized your collection?

I decided to create this new topic to discuss different ways to organize our Celine collections depending on the space we have and how big our collections are. I'll post pics this next week, how about you guys?

My entire CD collection (non Celine music included) is organized in alphabetical order and each artist is organized in year of release. So for Celine I have all the albums together organized in release date and the all the singles together in release dates.

Davey I know has an organization to die for.

I also have one to die from! :laugh:

I'm not very organized, as everything is in different cabinets, not indexed, not labeled, not by alphabetical order... which is pretty weird, as I'm an organization freak, but at least something good is that everything is clean and looks nice.

I have everything by country of release in chronological order (e.g. European albums, US albums, Japanese albums). I now have labelled dividers to make everything even more organised than before!

My entire CD collection is organised in alphabetical and then chronological order. Needless to say, my Celine Dion collection is separated from the rest of my CD collection, as a kind of - how do I put this? - shrine.

Mine is arranged by weight and the color wheel.

Not really. Mine's by album. and the singles come after the albums

Well mine is organised.... to some extend! :laugh:

Basically mine is diveded in:

1 all the standard albums, which I would play in the cdplayer;

and then I have them diveded in chronological order:

2 normal singles, cardboard and jewel case

3 bigger sized cardboard singles and promos

4 promos (by singles/ album samplers)

5 japanese 3" singles

6 cassettes singles

7 cassettes albums

8 vinyl 7"

9 vinyl 12" singles

10 vinyl 12" promos

11 vinyl 12" albums

12 normal albums

13 compilation albums

14 random releases by size (like long boxes, boxset releases etc)

but sometimes I get something new, or I get something out and it will all get messed up!!! :mdr:

hahaha this thread is hilarious. Im a bit like davey, i have all cds in plastic boxes that i can easily flick through and the boxes are divided into

(chronologically)

-Albums

-Duel & maxi singles/promos and album samplers (with any digi packs lying on top as they get crushed otherwise)

-Card sleeve singles (as they'd get crushed if i put them amongst the plastic cases)

-3" single snap packs (no particular order and lying flat (order is basically the best at the top haha)

-vinyl on its own

then everything else like promo boxes etc are in various sized boxes

basically i had to find a box home for everything as my parents wanted to re-do my room as im not there anymore so everything has a home.

Hi to all organized and non-organized people,

I will have to move in a few weeks, and I'm really not sure if in my new home I will have the space to have my entire collection :down: :down:

So I will have to store them here in my family (I'm sure they will keep it safe !)

Now, I am looking for a way to have a repertoire of my collection, but which would be complete and comprehensive, so that I don't have to ask someone to dig into numerous cardboxes to tell me if yes or know I have this or that...

Currently, I have an-up-to date Excel file, with one sheet per album, and one sheet per album singles (plus some extras).

Here is a printscreen (sorry, French Microsoft!).

By the way, all pictures come from the wonderful www.powerofthemusic.com :wub: :wub:

I am planning on adding next to each picture the reference number along with Col/Epic, etc.

How do you organize your collection ?

Do you think it is a good way to do it, knowing that my collection might be in cardboard boxes for months ?

All of my lists are in Microsoft Word. It is easier to work with text and tables in Word than fitting a table around text like in Microsoft Excel. I wrote the text and then added tables where I needed them. It is also easier to adjust the cell sizes in Word than in Excel. I keep track of what I have by changing the color of the text from black to pink once I have something. So black means I don't have it and pink means I do have it. Sometimes I use blue for I've bought it but it hasn't arrived yet so that I don't accidentally buy something that's on it's way to me. (see pic)

I have an external hard drive that I have everything organized in. So for example, I have a folder called "Record Covers" and then inside I have separate folders for cd's; cd singles; vinyls; vinyl singles; etc. I then have a pic of the front cover of each item and then when I save the pic I label it like ITWAOY_usaESK73665, that way if all of the covers for one song look the same I can tell by the file name which version I have.

I also have files for the "Merchandise", so if I buy something that came from "A New Day" then I have a picture of it in a file for "A New Day". Within that file I have a "HAVE" folder and once I buy something I move the picture into the "HAVE" folder so I don't accidentally buy it again.

There was a time when I didn't have my collection with me and this system really helped me keep track of what I had.

I do it the same as Davey, ansd I use my all time favo "friend" The Collectorslist.....

Just one note to alvick I see you list some of your CBS releases as 'From The Netherlands' but those are actualy from Europe, the country they are made in doesn't have to be the country of release. All the Albums for Europe are currently made in Poland but are not for the Polish market only.

I know that, but since Europe is such a broad spectrum it's easier for me to mark it as The Netherlands. The Netherlands are a country and Europe is a continent, plus their flag is easier for me to recognize. Edited July 16, 2016 at 02:36 PM by alvick53

Hi all,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

I was away on holiday, so this is why I reply so late.

Considering that I will have to move in 3 weeks, and that it would take me a lot of time to create something from scratch, I will keep on my idea. I will write the label & number in a cell next to each item in my Excel file. This is what I will do for now.

Later, I will think of a new way to organize my collection, a word document is a good idea too (though I like to travel through time easily with excel sheets )

Has some of you listed your collection in Discogs ? I saw that you can creat your own collection, and then manage it (as well as a Wantlist) ?

I see that Discogs is quite thorough and up to date.

Hello,

yes, it is easy to use for your collection. When I have new CD or vinyl, I add it into the list of the collection. Helpful is also the wantlist.

But I have some more articles which are not listed in my collection, this are CDs/vinyls which are not in the Discogs Discography. Here it is possible to create new articles which are not listed, but this seems a little difficult so I am not able to do this.

Hi,

It took me time, but I updated my collction in Discogs too (still need to check a few items).

I also found out that some items I have are not listed on the website.

For example, the Immmortality cassette release, Epic 666168 4, which I wanted to add.

So, when I was on the "Master release" of Immortality, I clicked the button "Add a release" below the list of all releases.

I then updated the correct informations of this release, and clicked "Submit".

But then, I cannot find the release I added (cassette single) on the "Master release" page.

Does anybody know how to make it appear ? That would be awesome.

Regarding my previous post, I noticed that someone added the cassette release to the master.

Can someone show me how to do it ? I have the same problem with Sans Attendre French paper re-release in 2014.
