chocolatechip15 Posted December 9, 2012 at 04:03 PM Posted December 9, 2012 at 04:03 PM (edited) Kathy is funny, and she's obviously a fan of Celine as both a singer and a person, but I hate the way she plays into the stereotypes of Rene as creepy old man preying on young Celine, and of Rene gambling away Celine's money. She's giving completely inaccurate information about Celine's interviews on Oprah and Barbara Walters (Celine said they had their first kiss when she was 20; on Barbara Walters she *denied* the rumours that Rene lost 10 million dollars gambling and said they each have some money set aside - for his gambling, and for her shopping. Besides which, Rene works very hard himself managing Celine's career and negotiating the contracts that get her the money. I know Kathy's routine is supposed to be a joke, but it's based on the core premise that the marriage is creepy because Rene is 26 years older, and that Rene is losing all Celine's money. I also find it really hard to believe that Celine & Rene would have wanted to talk with her, considering the way she always attacks Rene in her jokes -- it was one thing in Kathy's last routine, where she talked about going backstage as part of a charity auction that someone she knew had won, and Celine was gracious and sweet despite possibly knowing the sorts of things Kathy had said in the past . . very different that they would go out of their way to talk with her, or that Rene would sit with her for 15 minutes waiting for Celine . . .I just don't believe it. smw Posted December 9, 2012 at 04:37 PM Posted December 9, 2012 at 04:37 PM It's comedy, it's not about the accuracy. It's about getting a laugh. And she's one of the best out there right now. I love Kathy's comedic style and I love Kathy for loving Celine. She does more good for Celine than bad, that's for sure. Puts Celine in some people's awareness who never would have given a damn otherwise. 1 Quote

Celine Dion, Kathy Griffin spotted in Las Vegas: ‘Funny story' http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/86/3d/1342583392_1877_Capture1.JPG When Kathy Griffin is in the mix, anything is possible. The comedian took to her fans on Tuesday night to let them know she had a whopper of a story to share and half of it had to do with Celine Dion. The entertainers were both in Las Vegas when the two met up and had the chance to mingle. When one thing lead to another, Celine Dion and Kathy Griffin posed in a very cute but crafty moment.“Funny story behind this pic taken after her AWESOME Vegas show. Gotta come c me LIVE 2 hear it though,” tweeted Kathy Griffin from her official Twitter account on Tuesday. The comedian let her 1.5 million fans know that she had a moment with the award winning singer.Celine Dion is currently at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas performing. With a special meet and greet after the show people like Cathy Griffin can come back say hello and take a quick photo. Being that Kathy Griffin is a star, there is no doubt she had a moment to remember. Quote

chocolatechip15 Posted December 9, 2012 at 04:56 PM Posted December 9, 2012 at 04:56 PM Interesting articles . .thanks! I guess Kathy really did meet Celine again . . I just don't like the way she seems to love Celine but hate Rene. Comedy is funny because it exaggerates the kernels of truth in a story . . . When Kathy makes fun of Celine for her French accent or for dedicating a song "to all the parents and children of the world," it's funny because it's an exaggeration of Celine's real self, her earnestness and simplicity, etc. When she makes fun of Celine and Rene by mocking the age difference (she sometimes makes sexual jokes much cruder than those here) or being angry at him for losing all Celine's money in the casinos . . it's not an exaggeration, but a twisting and manipulation of the truth into something false -- and it plays into lies/stereotypes people already believe. It would be like her making jokes about Celine being anorexic . which Celine is not, but which is a stereotype people believe. I feel like that's what she does to Rene, and I think it's wrong. Quote

québecflower Posted December 9, 2012 at 11:27 PM Posted December 9, 2012 at 11:27 PM (edited) It makes good pub for Celine. She goes with things that people already thinks for the most part, The age difference, René's gambling, her french accent, her leather pantsuit , etc... I rediscovered Celine after a number by Kathy....and the facte that she openly says she loves her, i can forgive her. Some acts she does, you really can't say if she loves the artist (Sharon Stone, Oprah and others) And many have probably discovered by now that Celine has a great sense of humour, and that she doesn't take herself too seriously, which is great . takeachance Posted December 10, 2012 at 01:31 AM Posted December 10, 2012 at 01:31 AM I don't mind the whole Kathy taking the p**s out of Celine. As someone said above , it probably does Celine good sometimes to get her name out their and have people laugh. The only thing I really dislike about Kathy is when she exaggerates and says they started going out when Celine was 12. I find that disturbing and she probably shouldn't say it as it is very un true!!! Otherwise, her jokes are ok, but I wouldn't be falling around the place laughing at the same time!! CelinesDIVO5 Posted December 11, 2012 at 09:44 PM Posted December 11, 2012 at 09:44 PM So many of you are so sensitive and cynical. Comedy is comedy....I don't hear anything about when Chris Rock makes racist jokes in his stand up to get laughs. And why should Kathy Griffin only have gotten to meet Celine again by paying a lot of money to do so?? I don't think Celine has any qualms about meeting any celebrities. I mean, she sang with Rosie and a muppet for Christ's sake... Jeffieboi Posted December 12, 2012 at 03:43 AM Posted December 12, 2012 at 03:43 AM As long as Celine doesn't care....I don't care. Every celebrity has SOMETHING about them you can make a joke about, and I have no doubt Celine is very much aware of this, and realizes that it's all in good fun. Remember Saturday Night Live and "The Celine Dion Show"? Celine invited Ana Gasteyer ON STAGE during the LTAL tour, and she did the impersonation in front of Celine fans! Keep in mind, Celine's reaction was all laughter. Sometimes it's fun to laugh at yourself....especially when it's not coming from a malicious place. Quote
PuraVida Posted December 12, 2012 at 03:44 AM Author Posted December 12, 2012 at 03:44 AM she probably had to pay a decent amount of money in order to meet celine and is exaggerating wherever she can... Kathy specifically said in the clip that she was invited backstage by Celine. Kathy has made the facts clear, but she just says funny things that "allegedly" could have happened. She made it clear Celine/Rene met when she was 12, but she didn't insinuate anything. She stated the fact...that their first kiss was on her 18th birthday. AND I think it's pretty much a fact that Rene has gambled with "Celine's" money...and probably lost some in the process. Quote
chocolatechip15 Posted December 12, 2012 at 04:24 AM Posted December 12, 2012 at 04:24 AM She stated the fact...that their first kiss was on her 18th birthday. AND I think it's pretty much a fact that Rene has gambled with "Celine's" money...and probably lost some in the process. It's just that those aren't facts. . .Their first kiss wasn't until Celine was 20, and it wasn't on her birthday - it was the night of the Eurovision song contest at the end of April. Saying it was on her 18th birthday makes it sound like Rene was this creepy old man, waiting for Celine to turn 18 so she would be "legal" and he could pounce on her. And Rene would make money as Celine's manager . .while I would doubt that they have a formal management contract, an artist manager generally is entitled to 15 % and up of the artist's gross income. Considering Celine's income, that would be a *tremendous* amount of money. Rene works as hard as Celine . . probably works quite a bit more than she does in recent years (in terms of paid work, not the work she does as a mother). I have never understood why people view it as Rene spending Celine's money when he would be quite rich in his own right even if they weren't married, and when he works very hard himself. I know this is comedy and is not supposed to be taken seriously, but as I said before, I think it's cheap comedy that's based on unfair and untrue stereotypes. I do think the parts about Celine herself are quite funny, because it's so tempered by Kathy's love for Celine and because it's not based on these types of hurtful stereotypes. But I don't feel the same way about the jokes aimed at Rene. Quote

Celinenvegas Posted January 10, 2013 at 03:13 PM Posted January 10, 2013 at 03:13 PM Wow I thought a lot of the comments in this thread might be negative and trashing Kathy but I was glad to see many really thought it was funny. I was laughing pretty hard. Celine has such a great sense of humor, I'm sure she got a laugh out of it. I loved that she had Ana Gasteyer (from SNL) show up at her Madison Square Garden NYC show on the LTAL tour. That's what Kathy does but you could tell she does like Celine and respects her as a talented singer. I've always loved Kathy and she is always making me laugh. Quote ~J O E Y~
