omggggg...not a famous person but I was way too blown away to not post this one...

I Surrender...this kid was 12 years old when he recorded this...WOW

Sorry, but "I surrender" is no original-recording of Celine. It's a cover by a song originally recorded by Mary Griffin, who also sings the background vocals on Celine's version.

But the cover of the cover of the cover ;-) is indeed quite amazing!

We don't know whether Mary Griffin commercially released this song before or after Celine. Therfore we can't be 100% sure weather Celine's version is a cover or not. Even if Mary Griffin recorded the song before Celine, Celine's version can't be considered as a cover if Mary Griffin commercially released it after Celine.

I guess we all know the definition of a cover : ''A cover is defined as a song that was previously recorded AND commercially released.''

Hasn't it been discussed before? As far as I remember, this Mary Griffin (actually never heard of her) is the one who covered Celine.

Well, it WAS previously recorded AND commercially released!!! On her "Purified" CD album, for the first time in Japan 1996. It was RE-released in November 2002 in the States.

And here you can read too, that her song was chosen by Celine:

As I found out years ago, it was a complete surprise for me too, cause I always thought, that Celine's version was an original.

OK, it's a cover...but WHAT cover! The original is not very impressing for me and I'd probably would pay almost no attention to it but Celine's version...just breathtaking!

:sofunny: You're absolutely right!

But cover is cover, regardless of the quality! And seriously: Mostly all of Celine's cover-versions are way better than the originals! Even if they were superhits before. Look at Jennifer Rush "The power of love": It had been a SUPERHIT, number one in numerous countries around the globe, that rose her to stardom! But now? Can't remember that any radiostation plays another version than Celine's!

drove all night, you are wrong.

The Japanese version of her ''Purified'' album doesn't even feature ''I Surrender''. Take a look :

1 Purified

2 Perfect Moment (Ballad Version)

3 Love Is You And Me

4 We Can Get There (Ballad Version)

5 Just No Other Way

6 For The First Time

7 Never Give Up On Love

8 Dying Inside

9 Without You

10 We Can Get There (TP2K Radio Edit)

11 Perfect Moment (Almighty Radio Version)

''I Surrender'' was not written not in 1996 anyway. You should check the liners notes in the ''A New Day Has Come'' album booklet.

Now I'm confused! :whee:  Regarding these informaitons you seem to be right. But why did this woman always talk about "Celine recorded MY song??" - So, for finally getting information from the first hand, I wrote Ms. Griffin. Let's see if I'll ever get an answer. :hmm:

Great topic, indeed! I'm thankful to have it :) There is pretty good covers among all that you posted. This one of "Nothing broken but my heart" was interesting to hear to me. And about the topic - now i can remeber hearing a cover of "Ain't Gonna Look the Other Way" by No Angels a few years back. But, unfortunately I'can't find it on youtube. I have it on my PC and if someone is interested I could upload it there. :)

I think this is actually the original. Then Marie Claire did the English version and after that Celine covered it.

Who would have guessed, that the answer would come so quickly!!

Here is, what Mary Griffin wrote concerning "I surrender" and so now we have the info from first place:

She recorded it before, but her album came out 8 months after Celine's. So as we define "recorded AND released" before Celine, "I surrender" must be defined as original.

I see it as a little more subtle version. Not bad at all.

Thank you for sparing some of your time for this and making it clear for all of us.

So if the song "I Surrender" was originally composed for Mary Griffin and recorded before Celine and must be defined as original, then Celine's version is a cover in this case.

It's not a cover because Celine was first singer to release this song commercially.

Here's the definition of a cover : ''A cover is defined as a song that was previously recorded AND commercially released.''

This explain why a song like ''Taking Chances'' is considered as a cover but not a song like ''Surprise, Surprise'' (even though both songs were previously recorded by Kara DioGuardi before Celine). Kara's version of ''Taking Chances'' was commercially released before Celine's version but not ''Surprise, Surprise''. :)

If you're really going to be this rigid, this way; each Celine song is a cover, for the simple reason most songs are first sung by the writer or an unknown singer.
