Gaining perspective on Celine's career

Recommended Posts

As we head into another round of new albums, new promotion, new shows -- I think it is important for all of us Celine Dion fans to realize something pretty spectacular, if you have not yet had the epiphany…

And please remember that no matter where you fall on the "Celine Fan Spectrum" -- whether you fall more on the critical side, hoping Celine will continue to push herself towards even greater feats OR on the polar opposite end of the spectrum, hoping Celine just basks in her past successes and continues to live contently in her current state of success -- I hope we all find peace in the fact that Celine has achieved what she set out to achieve. I am a Celine Dion fan for so many reasons. The voice has kept me devoted but the passionate, driven woman makes me equally proud to have followed her career for so long now.

If you have not yet watched this Tribute on Gala de L'ADISQ, please do. All three parts but especially this one:

There is a part of the video where an adolescent Celine claims that her dream is to be an international star. And we see Celine's expression, in 2008, realizing that she's achieved that dream. But she's also achieved so much more that she didn't even realize she wanted as a girl: a family.

Celine absolutely does not need to do anything else ever again. But she is still soldering onward. Just look at all that she's accomplished since that tribute in 2008. The closing of the Taking Chances World Tour. Two more babies. Another Vegas contract. More albums on the way. Etc., etc., etc.

So as we head into all of the new stuff that Celine is so generously offering us, just keep clarity that she has already done it. And everything else from here on out, is just icing for us.

You're absolutely right! The hommage from Gala de L'Adisq 2008 was one of the few moments where I really felt the words from your post. Celine Dion is the best singer in the world, but she is so much more than that. It's no doubt she accomplished everything she ever set out to do. I don't believe it happened by chance. I believe she was meant to have this incomparable success (and voice). She's simply... THE BEST! A true gem that I'm very fortunate to see in my lifetime. Edited by CelineAndRene

Amen to EVERYTHING you said smv. What a wonderful singer and a beautiful, kind woman Celine is. She is THE BEST by far. What an example she is to everyone. Thank you Celine, for the past 30 years, and for what is still to come.

Agreed. It seems we often tend to forget what an amazing artist/singer/person Celine is. Maybe many people are aware of that and they are envious and that is why they bash her.

I do too. But it can get exhausting fighting the "no, really! Celine is incredible!" fight with people. Unfortunately, a certain image of Celine has been crammed down the general public's throats for so long, that only history will finally prove to those people what a one-of-a-kind talent this woman is. Maybe someday they'll look back and realize what they missed out on.

Those of us who are so intimately aware of all of Celine's layers are very lucky. Especially us fans who engage in all aspects of her career: French, English, and otherwise.

We don't have to wait for history to tell us how incredible she is. We already know.

What a fabulous post and you hit the nail totally on the head. Regardless of what the general public think of Celine the proof of her achievements is out there for all to see if only they would choose to look for it.

Celine has achieved all she set out to in life and then some. Not many people can say that.

well said, indeed!! at this point, anything new from celine is dessert... a sweet tasty indulgence.

It was so refreshing to read this :D I couldnt agree more and thats how i feel about Celine most of the time, its only this place that gets me feeling bad about Celine with so many negative things as she gets criticised in here far too often. I think we need to give celine more credit sometimes, she did do what she came to do, and she flew right past her expectations, anything she is doing now is just an extra and all for us :)

I love Celine, always will

well said! could not agree more. Celine has nothing left to prove to anyone, she's done it all and we've all been here to share the good and bad times with her...not only as an artist but as a person. As Celine herself has said, the best is yet to come & I personally can't wait:-)

I know this forum hates comparing to other singers, and so I'm not, but this is Exactly what happened to me with the late, Great Whitney. I was so struck/overtaken/overcome/overwhelmed and inundated by the drugs/crack/addiction etc. that the media excessively focussed on with her, that it was not, sadly :( until she died, that I looked back and thought, wow, whatever she did or did not do, or allowed Bobby Brown over there to do/not do, she was an amazing, uncomparable, inconceivable, amazing, phinominal singer, artist, legacy, pioneer, woman and mother. I only began to respect her after her very :( :death:

again, very, very :(

I'm sure though that her loyal, die-hard, hard-core maniac fans were probably keenly aware of it all along no matter what. I hope that those who do not at least respect some aspect of her, like I did with Whitney, but preferably before it's too late, recognize/respect Celine's amazingness.

This one sentence sums up everything I feel about her. For as she herself sings at the end of her song Miracle, who could ever love you more? That is how I feel about the one and only Celine Marie Claudette Dion!!!!!!!!!!!!

L'immensite de mon amour pour Celine! L'amour existe encore pour elle! :)

This is one of the best posts I have read on this entire forum during my short time here. I think that we, as fans, sometimes focus too much on what Céline hasn't done, or what we wish she would do, instead of what she has done. That makes sense, because we love her and want to see her achieve even more, but we also have to remember that she's got a heck of a lot to be proud of!! :-D

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. :flowers:

I hope they haven't already cut us!

I have to tell you that seeing your whole life before you in just a few minutes is quite a shock -- but what a wonderful shock you've given me. My dear Luc: your lyrics have touched me so much. My dear André: your beautiful music goes straight to my heart. Mr [blanché? I don't know how to spell the name], my dear -- maestro -- thank you so much. Mr [i don't know how to spell this name either], what an honour. Arigato.

It's quite incredible that the first time I got up on the ADISQ Gala stage I was crying, and that that tradition is continuing tonight.

[i don't quite understand the next bit: I can hear "these wonderful images that we've just seen" and "the magic touch of Stephane Laporte and Julie Snyder," but I don't quite understand how they both fit together!]

You've made me realise just how sweet and precious my life has been. It has, like you, given me so much love and happiness. I have to thank life and I have to thank you all.

To ADISQ, I would like to express my gratitude for this honour they have given me, which I share with my mother, all my family and the team that surrounds me. To all the artists nominated tonight, I say bravo, bravo, bravo.

A million thank yous also go to the writers and composers who create these songs which help us to lead better lives, and which give us love and peace.

I've been very privileged to receive all sorts of honours throughout my career, but whatever honours that have been given to us -- whether they're prizes or trophies -- around the world, my wonderful manager always brings them back here to Québec.

Because it's here that everything I've done makes sense: it's here, with you, where everything started and where everything continues. Wherever I am in the world, I'm always here. I know that you love me (woman in crowd: "SO MUCH!") and it's truly wonderful to be known by you all. I have to tell you that being recognised and known in your homeland is like finding yourself once again in your mother's arms and being told that you're loved.

I've loved you all for such a long time, and I know that we haven't finished growing together. René-Charles, my big boy: I don't just love you either, I adore you. Thank you all, and may peace be with you always. Thank you.

:flowers:

I was browsing through YouTube Celine videos, as I often do -- and I stumbled upon a recent video of Celine celebrating 10 years at the Colosseum. I didn't expect to have the reaction I did…

Rene was not able to make it to this event because he fell ill at the last minute. And Celine covered the bases herself.

It got me thinking back to the Katie Couric interview (which was probably around the same time) -- and I noticed Celine's strength of character. She seemed so ready to stand on her own two feet, without Rene being by her side. I often don't give Celine enough credit for being the type of business woman/entertainer like Madonna. I think Celine is infinitely more talented than most other artists -- but I sometimes forget how strong she is. The Katie Couric interview reminded me that the bowing out in 1999 was all decided by Celine. Rene gives Celine total credit for the LTAL concerts in 1998/1999 during his cancer scare and those are the biggest, most iconic concerts of her career.

I feel more connected and proud of Celine than ever when I think about her future. And how she will continue growing to be a stronger, more independent person. How she knows that this mega-iconic career ultimately falls in her hands. I'm so happy to know that RC and her twins will be by her side -- and that she's got a fantastic musical team and family surrounding her for support.

You are right, though:

Besides talent, hard working, great focus..etc., besides cunningly managing such a career, you need to be reeeeeally strong and smart,, of course she is, like every other artist in that playing field.

Yes definitely people do not give her enough credit!
I have had the time of my life following this woman! Much love.

I think that the main goal Celine Dion achieved during her career was the fact that she remained true to herself and was never influenced by the industry.

She could have failed very easily in 1990-1993, when she was starting to become a huge star in the US. She could have started to do parties, alcohol and drugs by that time 'cause she was having that huge power for the very first time, but she was wise enough not to do that and just keep working hard

I agree completely, and I think it's also what Celine would say about why she's succeeded in avoiding the usual pitfalls of fame and power.

In the meantime, I was thinking th same since 2007; however that would'nt be well seen if ever this album would (flop); she'll be every medium and hater target...I definetely will never understand this world, Madonna could flop (American life, MDNA), Mariah could flop (Glitter, Charmbracelet, E=MC2, Confessions of an imperfect angel); Celine never did (on a worldwide basis...);if only it happened to Celine, critics would've already buried her...I just hope that Loved me back to life would be as successful as Taking chances; which is the must-reach target at this level of her career...

WOW WOW WOW wait a minute... Isn't it like the best video about Celine ever ? I mean I"m always torn between the critical and uncritical side of that "fan spectrum". Fans are more or less selfish in a way. I mean, we always want our idol to bring us what made us fall in love with them. Whenever I watch Celine's recent videos, I'm usualy stressed out: "will she sing right? Will her voice sound powerful, clear and sharp?". A part of myself always wants her to be this close-to-a-machine-performer and I'm ashamed to be so demanding sometimes. I'm not denying that her performances earlier this month left me nostalgic about her 90's erea. But I've been starting saying to myself that only few artists managed to reach the top and remain there for so long. And God, she's done and achieve so much already that, it's her most legitim right to lean back and just be a legend. This video is just a great sum up of all the things we should remember before judging her. Great job from the ADISQ team. That's just made my day!

I think just after the end of this leg of Vegas shows, Celine will be around 50 years-old. This would be a perfect time to shoot a movie playing Maria Callas. She mentioned she wants to act I believe at the recent interview with Larry King. Classy and nicely made docu-movie about Callas, Celine playing and paying tribute to her would be a great thing. I certainly hope there are people (directors, production studios) interested to make this happen. I'd like to see big director names for the movie, not something cheesy and cheap...vissi d'arte!
