They met in 1981, said, “I do!” in 1994 and have never left each other’s side since. In a sensational documentary, the singer explains what keeps them together.

 

30 years ago, René Angélil, a Canadian manager, mortgaged his house to finance the first steps of a young 12-year-old singer… Céline Dion, who had just finished writing her first single, “Ce n’était qu’un rêve” [“It Was Only A Dream”], went on to kickstart her international career that everybody knows -- all thanks to this industry mogul.

 

People have always been interested in their story: some saw blind adoration of a young girl for her Pygmalion, while others were disapproving of a relationship between a man and a woman young enough to be his daughter. And yet, despite trials and tribulations, they’ve managed to prove the doubters wrong: the couple stays strong, united in their strong love.

 

How many showbiz couples, made in the same image – that is to say, mentor and protégée – have crumbled, thanks to the messy mix of love and fame? And how many parents-to-be, unlike Céline and René, haven’t been able to stand the painful wait for a baby? This singer-manager duo has overcome such difficulties in a way that merits admiration.

 

After all, nothing comes easy. This is what the singer will reveal on Monday May 21st, on France 3, in a new documentary that takes us into the intimate family life of the star. “Céline: 3 Boys & A New Show,” filmed between the birth of her twins, Eddy and Nelson, in October 2010, up until her return to Las Vegas, shows us the everyday life of this world-class artist: in her room just before giving birth, or just about to pump breast milk for her twins. These private moments are offered by Céline, who has always been generous with her fans. But more than these images, Céline and René also reveal the secrets of their unusual relationship that keep them united.

 

“As her husband, I can’t speak to Céline about show business or the doubts of whether she’ll be ready for the new show in time,” explains René, a few weeks before their debut in Las Vegas. It’s not easy for him – spouse, father and manager– to juggle all these roles at the same time. And yet, he manages to do all three by doing what he’s always done: protecting the singer he adores by separating work and family life.

 

Céline confirms: “As manager, he’s the boss – but at home, no talk about business!” And it’s true that in their beautiful home, there are more cradles and bottles, as well as RC’s toys – her affectionate nickname for René-Charles – than microphones and musical instruments. “When we’re working together, we don’t talk about work once we come home” – that’s the golden rule for this couple.

 

And yet, this rule alone can’t explain the surprising longevity of their relationship in a world that’s more used to celebrating divorces than golden anniversaries.

 

The star, known for her sense of humour, reveals that this clowning around forms part of the strength of their love. Rather than the crude proverb “Femme qui rit…” [which doesn’t translate into English…literally it means, “A woman who’s laughing is halfway into your bed,” and it means that the secret to seducing a woman into the bedroom is making her laugh), these two Québécois seem to have made up their own version: “René qui rit, un marriage pour la vie.” [This links back to the other expression because they both rhyme…the idea of this is that Céline and René’s marriage is lifelong because she can make him laugh.]

 

“I love making him laugh,” confesses Céline. “We don’t have much time to spend together; we work a lot and we want to spend our free time with our kids. The lovers that we are, the respect we have for each other and the love we feel is there everyday. But we don’t have the time to enjoy it as much as we’d like. One thing is sure: I love my husband very much. I respect his work. And when I can make him life, it means that the love is still there. It’s one of the things that makes me the most happy.”

 

Seeing them sat in the back of their big sedan, laughing over a made-up joke over a Thermos flask of coffee that won’t close, you can’t help but remark that you’d never get bored next to them both.
