"When Céline Dion said no: the ultimatum that blocked Lara Fabian in the United States

 

At the height of her fame, Céline Dion threatened to leave Sony Music when she learned that the record label planned to offer Lara Fabian a contract to launch her career in the United States.

 

This is what Vito Luprano, René Angélil's former right-hand man, reveals in *It's All Coming Back To Me... From My Humble Beginnings to the True Story Behind Céline Dion's Career*, a book to be released on January 12th, the contents of which were reportedly approved by Céline Dion's lawyers.

 

"If that happens, I won't record for Sony anymore," Céline Dion allegedly said in 1997 during a conference call that also included Luprano, then Vice President of the A&R division of Sony Music Canada, René Angélil, and Polly Anthony, President of 550 Music, the Sony Music subsidiary that wanted to sign the Belgian singer.

 

Following this ultimatum, Sony Music executives sided with Céline Dion, and Lara Fabian ultimately never had the chance to try and win over the American market.

 

"She was mean"

 

According to Vito Luprano, Céline Dion was hurt by comments made by Lara Fabian after the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest final. Representing Switzerland, the Quebec singer won the prestigious competition, while her rival, representing Luxembourg, finished in fourth place.

 

Lara Fabian had then claimed that she was a better singer than Céline, Vito Luprano recounts in his book.

 

“She was really mean to Céline for no reason. René and I told her to ignore her, but it broke Céline’s heart,” Mr. Luprano said in an interview with the Journal.

 

Sony Music asked him to intercede with Céline Dion, but he says he refused. “She was right to do that. They called me to try and convince her, but I said no, I can’t convince her.

 

“Lara Fabian wasn’t nice to Céline,” reports her former artistic director

This account seems to contradict statements Lara Fabian made to European media and the Journal in 2024. She denied that a rivalry existed between the two singers.

 

“I don’t believe in this war that was invented by the media. I’m not putting all the media in the same category, but there are two or three people who orchestrated this story and who have done harm, not just to her or just to me, but to all the people who love us and who felt forced to choose sides,” she told the Journal.

 

Describing herself as a great admirer of Céline Dion, Lara Fabian also stated that she has long hoped to sing a duet with her, a dream she still clings to today.

Despite a disappointing 2025 for Céline Dion, her former collaborators haven't lost hope of seeing her resume her career and even return to the stage soon.

 

"Céline will come back when she's 100% ready. A tour is a huge undertaking," explains Barnev Valsaint, a collaborator of Céline's and a backup singer on her international tours for 25 years.

 

"She's made for the stage. If she doesn't come back, it's because she needs rest, to take care of her family. Her health has to be 100% for her to return," he adds.

 

The singer claims to be in contact with people on Céline Dion's team.

 

"They tell me she's in good spirits and working on new music. That's already a big step. Even I'm impatient. I want to see her again," he says.

 

Vito Luprano claims to be the best person to help her regain her place at the top of the charts. However, their last meeting was at the funeral of Céline's mother, in 2020. He says he took the opportunity to ask her to call him. He hasn't heard from her since.

 

"I have an album in me. It would be amazing," he confides.

 

"She deserves it so much."

The singer Garou, who was close to Céline during the recording of their duet "Sous le vent," understands that the diva prefers not to rush her return. "I understand perfectly that she needs to take a break. She gave an Olympic performance. It's okay for her to make a few appearances, but she shouldn't put too much pressure on herself," he explains.

 

He also believes that Céline deserves a break after the extraordinary career she has had since her teens. "A career, when it becomes as big as hers, becomes obsessive. "Always being at the top, at number one. She was there so often, so if she's been able to step back, that makes me happy, because she deserves it so much," he said.

 

According to him, Céline will return to the stage, but she needs time to recover her health.

 

"I think she's capable of coming back soon, but she doesn't have to. I could easily imagine her making a small album in French and doing a fun little tour."

 

That's what Céline's loyal fans are hoping for in 2026.
