Celine Dion's new show has critics raving

By Kitty Bean Yancey, USA TODAY

The reviews are in on Celine Dion's new show at Caesars Palace -- and they're pretty amazing.

Some thought the Canadian hitmaker, back onstage in Vegas this week after a 3-year hiatus to be a mom to her son with husband Rene Angelil and to bear twins, was taking a chance scaling down her show by eliminating the back-up dancers and stage shenanigans. But she is now being compared to Frank Sinatra as she sings her hits and classics to the accompaniment of a 31-piece orchestra.

Las Vegas Review-Journal celeb columnist Norm Clarke rounded up reviews, saying,

"Marie Vastel of The Canadian Press wrote: 'If her last Vegas act drew epic inspiration from the Cirque du Soleil, this one is more likely to rekindle memories of Frank Sinatra.'

"Newsweek called the international superstar the 'biggest act since Elvis,' while the addition of a 31-piece orchestra 'brings to mind Vegas's Rat Pack glory days.'

"Dany Bouchard of the Journal de Montreal called it 'a resounding success that definitely trumps the sold-out first run.' He said the big-band spectacular "combines the energy of a pop show with the refinement of a classical music concert. If Las Vegas was counting on Canada's greatest pop superstar to help drag it out of the recession once and for all, Celine just might deliver.'"

As for the Review-Journal, veteran reviewer Mike Weatherford gave the show, simply called "Celine," an A.

His opening shows he hasn't always been a fan:

"Two things always seemed to be a big problem for Celine Dion:

1. Most of her music, at least the English-language pop, was pretty crappy.

2. She wasn't really 40 yet.

Both of those issues are happily cured in the singer's return to Caesars Palace."

Weatherford (here's his review) says the new show includes Goldfinger and other James Bond theme songs to Jacque Brel's tear-jerking Ne Me Quitte Pas (If You Go Away), to the Eric Carmen smash All By Myself. He says the 42-year-old shows confidence and maturity, on top of a pitch-perfect voice.

In a USA TODAY online survey this week, which drew more than 2,300 responses, Dion was the No. 1 choice to see in concert, ahead of (in order) Elton John, Garth Brooks, Jimmy Buffett, Cher, Lady Gaga, Janet Jackson and Usher.

So it seems this time around, the fans are the biggest critics.... :msn-wink:

Thank you for the article. :flowers: Celine is simply the best, better than all the rest. For the critics, to name her up there with Elvis, and Frank Sinatra, is huge. After this show, is over she is going to be a legend. :thumbsup2: :thumbsup2:
