Review: Céline Dion’s Vegas show more spectacular than ever The year is still young, but the prize for the best vocal rendition of the year has to go, no questions asked, to Céline Dion, whose performance of Jacques Brel’s “Ne me quitte pas” is, quite simply just about as good as singing gets. It’s hard to guess what anyone imagined Dion would do to top her 2003 show “A New Day” which made Caesars Palace the top-grossing venue on the Billboard charts for five years. That outing began with a lot of Cirque-du-Soleil-esque staging by Franco Dragone, but as the spectacle’s five year run continued, the visuals diminished and it gradually became all Celine, all the time. But this time around, Dion has enlisted the support of the classy Montreal company, Moment Factory, who have found endless ways to present Dion to the public in a stylish and inventive way, using lights, projections and all the other tricks of the trade that make the evening soar. There are also 31 musicians and three backup singers, but make no mistake — this is Dion’s evening. The astonishing thing is that she doesn’t just recycle her old hits, although enough of them appear to make a diehard Celine fan happy. No, she takes a lot of chances and almost all of them work. Can you believe Dion doing a medley of songs from James Bond movies? Well, they happen and happen brilliantly, with numbers like “Live and Let Die” getting the kind of passionate twist only Dion can provide. But a lot of the other surprises are of the minimalist kind. Who ever thought that Dion would let herself sit alone on stage, without visual support, bearing her soul in Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” in a way she’s never done before. The way she spits out the lyrics about “those of us with ravaged faces” reveals more about the woman than we have ever known before. And then there’s the aforementioned “Ne me quitte pas”, which finds Dion connecting with Brel’s original French lyric in an amazingly personal way. At a point in her career when Dion could be content to recycle hits and coast on past successes, her blazing honesty with new and daring material is more than commendable, it’s sublime. There’s a moving tribute to Michael Jackson, a stunning “trick” duet with herself on “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” and a finale rendition of “River Deep, Mountain High” that simply rocks the joint. Quite simply, Dion is better than ever.
