Celine Dion preps for new Vegas residency

After five consecutive years of sold-out performances followed by three years away from Sin City, Celine Dion will return to Las Vegas' Ceasars Palace for her new show and three-year engagement.

 

The singer will debut the new act, helmed by long-time Grammys director Ken Ehrlich, March 15. Tickets for the first 54 performances, which run through mid-August, range from $55 to $250 and are available now via Ticketmaster.

 

The new show will feature 31 musicians, including a full orchestra and band, as well as a stunning visual presentation, according to a press release.

 

"The repertoire is going to be extraordinary ... a mix of timeless Hollywood classics, along with all the favorites that my fans like to hear me sing," Dion said. "It's going to be a very beautiful show, and I think we'll be raising the bar higher than we've ever done before."

 

The multiple Grammy winner returned to Vegas earlier this week with her family, including newborn twin sons, Eddy and Nelson.

Im sure the show is going to be wonderful no matter what Celine sings. It certainly sounds very elegant and sophisticated with the orchestra.

Celine Dion returns to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace

 

 

Elegant French-Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion has soared high in the entertainment stratosphere for so long that it sometimes seems like she was born a star. Yet in fact she rose from humble beginnings, overcame substantial obstacles and employed an uncommon work ethic to become one of the world’s most successful performers, selling more than 200 million albums to date. Now, adding another jewel to an already crowded career crown, Dion will be returning to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for a three-year residency beginning on March 15.

 

 

The 4,000-seat Colosseum was purpose-built for Dion’s previous Caesars Palace run — five consecutive years of sold-out shows for her “A New Day” extravaganza, which set a new standard for Vegas residencies. When it ended in 2007, Dion embarked on a triumphant yearlong world tour that was seen by more than 3 million fans. She then took a well-earned break, during which she gave birth to twins. But her sheer passion for singing and the stage brings her back to Vegas with an all-new show designed exclusively for the Colosseum.

 

 

“I’m coming back home to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace and I’m very excited about it,” Dion said in a statement. “With the orchestra and the band we’re going to be able to perform our songs like never before. The repertoire is going to be extraordinary … a mix of timeless hit songs made famous by some incredible artists, along with all the favorites that my fans like to hear me sing. It’s going to be a very beautiful show, and I think we’ll be raising the bar higher than we’ve ever done before. There’ll be some truly wonderful moments.... I can’t wait!”

 

 

The youngest of 14 children, Dion grew up in the small town of Charlemagne, Quebec. Her family, though of modest means, was rich in music. She was singing in her parents’ piano bar by age 5, her style already being shaped by the music of Aretha Franklin, the Bee Gees, Barbra Streisand and Michael Jackson (Dion would eventually collaborate with all of these artists).

 

 

By the time she was 12, with help from her mother and brother, she had written and recorded her first song (“Ce n’etait qu’un rêve,” which translates to “It Was Only a Dream”) and mailed it to manager René Angélil. When Angélil subsequently invited Dion to sing for him at his office, he was moved not only to tears but to mortgage his home to fund her first album. By 1983 she had a gold record in France — and was just 15 years old.

 

 

Yet the ever-ambitious Dion craved more and was willing to work for it. Success in the United States had eluded her, in large part because she sang entirely in French. The tenacious Angélil pulled his charge out of the spotlight for a year while she took intensive English lessons and underwent a comprehensive image makeover. When she re-emerged with her debut English album, 1990’s “Unison,” her patience and hard work paid off. The soft-rock collection was embraced by adult contemporary radio stations and the single “Where Does My Heart Beat Now,” a mid-tempo ballad, hit No. 4 on America’s Billboard Hot 100.

 

 

Dion sealed her superstar status when she duetted with R&B crooner Peabo Bryson on the Academy and Grammy Award-winning title track to Disney’s animated “Beauty and the Beast” movie in 1991. Meanwhile, her relationship with Angélil had become a romantic one. The couple initially feared the public reaction to this news and kept it under wraps for years, but their extravagant 1994 wedding at Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica was cheered by fans and even broadcast live on Canadian TV.

 

 

Working with furious focus, she managed to release no fewer than six albums between 1992 and 1996, culminating in the double Grammy-winning “Falling into You.” Dion’s tear-jerking “My Heart Will Go On,” the theme song for the 1997 blockbuster “Titanic” movie, became a colossal hit and remains her signature tune to this day.

 

 

After a decade during which she released 13 albums in both English and French, Dion took a break in 2000, in part prompted by her husband’s diagnosis with throat cancer. Angélil beat the disease and Dion gave birth to her first child (a son, René-Charles) in 2001.

 

 

Early in 2002, Dion announced her next career move: a three-year, 600-concert contract to perform five nights a week at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Created by Cirque du Soleil director Franco Dragone and titled “A New Day” (in reference to Dion’s 2002 “A New Day Has Come” CD), the elaborate production was so popular that its run was extended into late 2007 and would ultimately gross $400 million. In May 2010, a Harris Poll named Dion the most popular singer/musician in the United States, ahead of the Beatles, Elvis and U2.

 

 

After the staggering success of her previous Caesars Palace run, Dion was keen to return to the Colosseum following a year of personal time and the birth of twins Eddy and Nelson. And it speaks volumes about her joy in performing that, though she has nothing left to prove commercially and could have comfortably retired years ago, she is so eager to hit the stage once again.

 

 

Celine Dion’s love for Las Vegas, and for Caesars Palace in particular, is evident: She and Angélil even renewed their marriage vows at an elaborate Arab-themed ceremony at Caesars in early 2000. Now it’s time for her to renew her commitment to her fans there with what promises to be her most magical performance yet.
