I don’t get a lot of sleep, yes, for sure I’m tired, but that’s what I want.” Celine, 42, also spoke about the heartbreak of having originally being pregnant with triplets. “For a week we thought we had triplets, but sadly on the next visit to the doctors we only heard two heartbeats,” she revealed. “That little baby decided to leave the space for the two others and to say goodbye to us. It happened very early during the pregnancy. But still, it shocks you.” Before this pregnancy, Celine and Rene had spent years trying for a sibling for their nine-year-old son Rene-Charles. Celine endured six rounds of IVF and suffered a miscarriage. Rene says that the twins arrival was understandably emotional. “We were crying, he said. “Even though we didn’t speak to each other, we were both thinking about the time it took [to conceive them].” The couple also spoke about the names they have chosen for their sons, Eddy and Nelson. “The idea is to have our sons be inspired by somebody that has the same name,” said Rene, 68, who also has three grown-up children from two previous marriages. “We met with Nelson Mandela and spent some time with him at his house when we started Celine’s world tour,” he said. “Eddy is an homage to Eddy Marnay,” he said, referring to the French songwriter who wrote Celine’s first five albums, and had also written for Edith Piaf and Nana Mouskouri. “He was like a father to me,” said Celine. “He passed away six years ago. He was such a gentle man, everybody loved him.” SEE THE FULL EXCLUSIVE ARTICLE IN HELLO! Sofie Posted November 13, 2010 at 08:04 PM Posted November 13, 2010 at 08:04 PM Here's the whole interview: Céline Dion welcomes her twinsThe mum-of-three and husband René share their joy over new sons Eddy and Nelson. Saturday 23 Ocotober began like any other day for Céline Dion’s husband, René Angélil, and their son, René-Charles, who were headed to the nine-year-old’s baseball game. That is until Céline, 35 weeks’ pregnant with twins and on bed rest at hospital in nearby West Palm Beach, Florida, called René in panic. ”It’s gonna happen!” the 42-year-old singer said, urging him to come. Not long after, instead of watching his son swing a bat, the 68-year-old music executive saw his two youngest boys make their entrance into the world – just days after Céline had spoken exclusivly to Hello! From her hospital bed about her pregnancey and struggle to conceive via IVFIt was to be nearly a week, though, before the coulpe would settle on the names for the little ones who had until then been known as ”Baby A” and ”Baby B” – Eddy and Nelson, named for two inspirational figures in René and Céline’s life: songwriter Eddy Marnay, and iconic South African statesman Nelson Mandela. The delighted family-of-five are now settled in at their spacious Florida mansion where Nelson and Eddy, their big brother ”RC” and famous mum and dad are ”doing great” and are thrilled to be home.In this interview, the proud parents share the emotional events surrounding the birth of their twin boys, the reason it took so long to name them, and their joyous arrival home. First off, tell us about the names! It’s been said that you considered over 15,000 of them.René: Well, Nelson – Céline loved that name from the beginning because we met with Nelson Mandela and spent some time with him at his house when we started Céline’s world tour. We were so struck by his personality – we still think about that meeting.Eddy is in homage to Eddy Marnay, another great person. He was one of the greatest songwriters in France – he wrote for Edith Piaf, Nana Mouskouri. And he wrote Céline’s first five albums.Céline: He was like a father to me, and he passed away six years ago. He was such a gentle man,. Everybody loved him – he was sweet, he was humble, super intelligent. We loved him, and he’s a hero to us.We wanted our sons to have these names so that they, too, could be inspired by the men they were named for. Was it a difficult decision not to use a family name?R: It was difficult – it took some time to come up with that decision. But we felt it was the best decision. We decided only yesterday. Céline decided who would be who. What colour is their hair? They’re both very dark. They have lots of hair… You were very dark, weren’t you?[laughs] Yes, I was very dark. And Céline, too, is dark. Why did it take you so long to decide on the names?Because when we got home, we finally had time to talk about it, Here’s the story: all time that she was pregnant, she was looking at names and talking about names, and I didn’t really want to get into names because I’m superstitious and the pregnancy was very difficult – it took a year and a half. I didn’t want to jinx it by agreeing on two names before the twins were even born.Céline knew that I would tell her my opinions once the babies were born. So when they came, we didn’t really have the time at the hospital to talk about it. Every time we were alone, somebody would come in – it was very busy. She had to feed the babies every two hours. The first time we really had time to discuss it was when we arrived home. Céline, were you breastfeeding them in the hospital?Yes, they were in the neonatal intensive care unit for several days but I was able to breastfeed them. It’s going well, I don’t get a lot of sleep, yes for sure I’m tired, but that’s what I want. And it’s only for the first month or so.R: We are supplementing with a bottle. I fed them a few times in the hospital. Céline, you’ve said that you had a third fetus in the womb – you could have had triplets.Yes, for about a week we thought we had triplets, bet sadly on the next visit to the doctor’s we only heard two heartbeats. That little baby decided to leave the space for the two other and to say goodbye to us. It happened very early during the pregnancy. But still, it chocks you.R: She was very upset, but we’re lucky we had even one baby. And we have two! Is it true that you were hoping for a girl, Céline?I was hoping to have a boy and a girl. But beyond that, of course, I was simply thrilled to be pregnant. We are blessed. And our boys are perfect. Tell us a little about the babies’ personalities…R: One is more gutsy than the other. Nelson seems to have a little stronger personality right now, he’s the tougher of the two. They are faternal twins, but they look very alike. Nelson weighed more at the birth, but the doctor told us in a week or two, they’re going to be the same.C: They’re so cute it’s incredible. When we look at them we can’t believe it! And to have them here at home – is all we could wish for. Do they cry at different times?C: No – when one cries the other one cries, or they both don’t cry. And of course the boys are all US citizens…They have both passports. René-Charles has a Canadian passport and an American passport; the twins are the same story. How is René-Charles with his brothers? He loves them. He had given them their bottle, too. He’s so sweet with them. It’s only going to get better. He knows it and we know that. It just gets better every day! What was the day of the birth like?R: I was about to leave the house with René-Charles and we got the call from Céline, who said, ”I think you’d better come right now!” So one of her sisters took care of René-Charles – they went to the baseball game – I left with Céline’s older sister Linda, her mum and we went straight to the hospital. We arrived just in time. As soon as I got there, they put in the green costumes on us and we went with Céline. At 11.11 exactly we had our first one come out, and it was very, very emotional, of course, when we heard him cry. We were crying too. And a minute later the other one came out – the same thing…I cut both cords. One baby was 5lbs 10oz, the other 5lbs 4oz. When did RC see his little brothers? He came to the hospital right after his game, and he was thrilled. He said, ”One looks like Dad, the other looks like Mum!” Who was present at the birth?Céline’s mum was there during the actual birth. And Linda, who filmed the whole thing. For family consumption only, I assume!Exactly! Were you surprised how quickly the twins arrived? We thought they would stay inside longer. She was due on November 8. So it’s a little early – 35 weeks. But everything just started happening when she want into labour. The babies wanted to come out! René-Charles was also born a little early… Yes, he came out three weeks early. It was also fast. Who will be helping you take care of the babies?Linda took care of René-Charles. She’s staying with us. She and her husband live about ten minutes from the house. She’s there every day. Céline, who is one of 14 siblings, has twin brothers, doesn’t she?Yes, Céline is the youngest, and six years before she was born it was twins. I’m sure Céline’s mum will have plenty of advice. She is so expert at raising children. And she has 36 grandchildren now and 22 great-grandchildren. Your wonderful story touches so many people, but does the attention ever bother you? It’s great to see that people love Céline and are happy for her. But in our house we have no trophies even though she has over 1,000. The house is a family house. We try not to talk about showbusiness. We hardly play any music. Will she sing to the babies though?I’m sure she will sing. Can you give us a teaser about your upcoming Las Vegas show?R: We have the whole show planned out already. A big orchestra, 51 musicians… it’s a different show from before. There will be lots of special effects and a great, great show with a lot of her hit songs. Quote
