****************************************

Darren: Chris, thanks a lot for taking time out of you’re Vegas schedule to talk with me today.

Chris: No problem, Darren. Thanks for inviting me to share my amazing experiences with Celine, on the forum.

Darren: Chris myself and other fans are interested to learn more about you… so could you tell us where it all began for you, you’re family, were you grew up etc.

Chris: Sure. I am from a town in Scotland that most people have heard of, but never knew it is actually a place! Paisley, near Glasgow in the West of Scotland. And yes, I can proudly state; the famous clothing pattern originated from my wee town.

All of my family still live there, I have one older brother, 3 nephews and 1 niece.

Darren: How did you first become interested in dance… and how did you set about getting a career in dance?

Chris: I started out in gymnastics, Sport Acrobatics to be exact. Dance was introduced to me as part of my acrobatic training and I immediately fell in love with movement. I picked up classes locally, and through some awesome guidance from my teachers, I successfully attained a scholarship to train full-time at Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts in London.

After a couple of years in professional employment I took myself off to New York City where I finished my training at studios in Manhattan.

Darren: Over the years you have appeared in a range of shows in the UK including; ‘’Miss Saigon’’ & ‘’Cats’’ in the West End… you choreographed Michael Flatley’s docu-drama ‘’King Of Clubs’’, and you’ve also been the artistic coordinator for the ‘’Crazy Horse Paris Cabaret’’ at the MGM in Vegas, but what would you describe as being the highlight of you’re career so far?

Chris: Without a doubt, it would be being selected to perform in A New Day… in Las Vegas with Celine. It had the most profound effect on my life and the direction it took.

Darren: Like any job/career, there are obviously positives and negatives to what you do… What is the most enjoyable and most challenging part of your job?

Chris: The most enjoyable part of my job is that I get to be creative on a daily basis. I have the opportunity, everyday, to use this body I was given to its fullest potential and have the daily opportunity to express myself through movement. It is a magical gift that I am most grateful for.

The most challenging part of the job is maintaining peak physical performance. When you push yourself to your physical limits, it sometimes comes at a cost – and certainly injuries, aches and pains are by far the drawbacks.

Darren: When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing, and how do you relax?

Chris: There’s nothing like a day at the spa: hot tub, sauna, and massage – oh can’t wait for the weekend already! I Love going to the cinema, dining out, shows on the Vegas Strip, and trips to L.A/San Diego/National Parks.

Darren: How did you first hear about A new day... and what made you want to audition for the show, what was the process?

Chris: My agent in London told me about the audition. It was a 3 day event.

Over a thousand people applied, dancers and acrobats. I was in day 2 auditions. It turned out to be an all-day event – about 9 hours or so.

It was clear to me that they were not into wasting time since they cut over 50 people within the first 20 minutes after seeing us perform a simple walking pattern across the floor. From there they drilled us in every style of dance. They made us improvise, act, sing, flip, and then wanted to see it all again... this time for the video camera. And it finished with a short interview. I was wiped out by the end, but thoroughly fulfilled.

Darren: Where you a fan or aware of Celine at the time?

Chris: I certainly knew who Celine was. But I didn’t follow her music, or at least I thought I didn’t follow her music... I turned up in Belgium for rehearsals and started to recognise many of her hits as we created the show. I could usually be heard saying...”Oh my god, she sang that!?!”

Darren: So really you were a fan without actually knowing it, ha ha.

Chris: Yes, songs like It’s All Coming Back to Me Now, To Love you More, Think Twice are all so well known, but at the time I never really knew that Celine sang them. I think that’s the case for many people who say they don’t really know many of Celine’s hits.

Darren: The dancers spent a gruelling few months rehearsing for the show both in Belgium and at the Colosseum in Vegas. But in Vegas you were faced with ''that stage'', something many dancers and Celine herself found difficult to dance/perform on. So it must have come as a bit of a challenge after rehearsing for months on a flat stage in Belgium, to then to come to Vegas and actually rehearse on a totally different setup. Just how difficult was it to perform on, did any routines have to be changed or tweaked because of it, and what was the worst injury sustained by yourself or any other of the dancers who took part in the show, because of it?

Chris: Yes, ‘that stage’ was quite something. Much of the choreography changed when we arrived in Vegas, not so much because of the raked stage but more because of the size of the stage. In Belgium we rehearsed in a large studio, but nothing compared to the expanse and depth of the stage in the Colosseum. Much of the choreography had to be adapted when we realised the sheer vastness of the space.

But yes, the incline itself was just a huge obstacle. Like the rest of the dancers, I was very fortunate to never experience any serious injuries because of the raked stage, more just wear and tear over time.

Dancing on that beast for 5 ½ years is enough to stress out much of your lower limbs and lower back. It took me the best part of a year to feel like I had recovered physically from the demands of being on the rake. We were very fortunate to have an incredible physiotherapy team that helped keep us in top shape. I still see the therapists to this day... no other team know my body so well.

I owe that to Celine and her team for assembling such a talented crew.

Darren: Was their ever a point during any of the shows were you thought/realised, wow I'm onstage performing next to Celine Dion to a sold out theatre in Vegas, with over 4,000 people staring back at me…

Chris: Opening Night! The reaction of the crowd when she stepped on that stage was incredible. It was then I knew we were into the real deal. Celine audiences are phenomenal!

Another great moment like that was the night we premiered River Deep, Mountain High. What a buzz that night was! She looked incredible in that McQueen dress and we were just serving the audience the choreography on a silver platter. That instantly recognizable intro to the song started and the whole orchestra section leaped to its feet. Celine sang it like she had never sung it before, and we danced it with serious attitude... the same melody closes the song as we all march into that line for the final pose - and the whole Colosseum leaped to its feet. Good times!!!

Darren: A new day... evolved quite a bit over its five year run, but for you what part of the show/song did you like performing most/least, and why?

Chris: There were so many great moments in the show. Dancing the final combination of I Drove All Night was definitely a highlight. To be surrounded by such talent all moving together as one unit is an incredible experience. River Deep, was definitely a lot of fun, in large part because of the audience reaction.

I can safely say there was not one step or song in the show I did not like.

I also was one of the flyers during The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, seeing the Colosseum from a different angle was awesome, and of course watching Celine and Nicolai fly in front of me was magical. I was sorry to see that song go.

Darren: Have you any stories funny or otherwise, of you're time spent with the dancers and Celine, during A new day... that you could share?

Chris: Wow, we had some funny times. I remember Kelby Brown, one of the male dancers, dressing up as one of the girls for Power of Love, Celine’s face was priceless. Kelby also jumped out a cake, in a bikini, for Pavel Brun’s ( Franco’s assistant director ) birthday one year, Pavel’s face was priceless. Michel Dion walking the stage during Seduces Me with his shirt off. Dennis Rodriguez, Company Manager, being carted across the stage as Hannibal Lecter when Sir Anthony Hopkins was in the audience. We all blacked out one tooth during I Wish one night and smiled at Celine – we could never get her to crack!!!

During creation of the show, after a particularly long and tiring day, as the stairs went up for Power of Love, Franco is expecting to see the girls parade down, instead he got all the boys in their g-strings...”O.K, everybody go home,” he laughed. And there were just countless skits that we all did over the years, the list would be something else.

Darren: You guys had a lot of fun huh, ha ha…

We all know that Celine can also be a bit of a joker… did she ever join in or do anything particularly funny that sticks out in you’re mind?

Chris: Celine is just great to be around all the time. No one instance sticks out in fact. Any time we spent with Celine there was always a joke to be had and all the time was spent laughing. Celine can be sneaky jokey on stage when her back is to the audience, or in moments when she knows only ‘you’ will get the reference. That’s a real pro right there; can crack you up in front of thousands of people without the audience even realising it happened!

Darren: Can you describe a day in the life of A new day… dancer. We seen what you all got up to backstage during the show in the DVD extra’s, but what happened before and after the show, what was the routine… and did yourself and the other dancers have other jobs?

Chris: Celine was so generous to us it was unbelievable. There was a budget to provide us with training and dance classes, every day. She brought in the best teachers and choreographers from all over the world to work with us. So class usually started at 4 to 5:30. We then went into notes and restaging 5:30 to 6:30. We used this time to modify the show if need be, to cover people who were sick or injured. We then went for dinner and came back to start show preparations; make-up, warm up etc. Our yearly show schedule allowed us to work in other places and also to produce events that we could use as a creative outlet out with the Colosseum. So events like Steal Focus were born, where we got together to bring the Las Vegas community a unique artistic event; merging music, dance, mime, drama, video and projection into a wonderful evening of entertainment.

With all the downtime, we travelled so many places. We had people travelling to all corners of the planet and returning with amazing stories and great pictures. We partied! Celine sure knows how to throw a party! We spent every New Year’s Eve together in the Colosseum, watching the fireworks and celebrating with great friends. It was truly an extraordinary time.

Darren: I'm sure that after five years of performing the show, when it came to an end in December of 2007, there must have been alot of mixed emotions backstage that night as obviously you all in a way had become a big family and shared alot of memories together over that time. What's you're thoughts/feelings/memories of that night?

Chris: I have great memories from that night. I was ready to move on, but would easily have stayed for another year, if that makes any sense. We all grew so close over the years and we are all still in touch with each other regularly. We knew it was not goodbye, but felt like it was going to be. Physically I was beat by the stage, and definitely needed time for my body to heal. Saying goodbye to the rake was no problem. Saying goodbye to the show, knowing how much heart went in to it, and knowing that I’d never dance it again was also hard.

The final bow that night was incredibly touching. The send off from the audience was stellar, Celine’s final thank-you to us as she turned upstage after her bow was sincere and heartfelt. What a night!

Darren: What did you then move on to do after the curtain fell on A new day…?

Chris: I returned to Scotland for a few months to spend time with my family. I had been gone for so long it felt right to be at home after such a rollercoaster experience. I returned to Vegas in the spring and freelanced in the city.

And I am now currently performing in ‘’Viva Elvis’’, Cirque du Soleil – with 9 other A New Day family members!!!

Darren: During Celine’s Taking Chances World Tour, you were called on to replace Aaron Felske, who got injured during a show in the U.S... do you remember getting the phone call, and what happened from then on, could you share the story with us…

Chris: The phone call came late at night. I was in Scotland. Aaron said he had hurt himself and wasted no time in explaining what had happened, but got right to the point; they want to know if you can come over and do the DVD? I was in shock. There were so many questions going through my mind. I was at home to support my family since my Mum had just gone through some serious surgery. They wanted an answer quick since the filming of the DVD was going to be that weekend. With everything that was happening at home I said you probably need to find someone else. We all put our heads together to think of someone that would be available to come in. The fact that acrobatic skills were a necessity made it a difficult task, and other dancers were under contract in other places. I asked if they could give me two days; yes, they were willing to wait.

Day 2 my mum gets the clear from the doctor that her surgery was a huge success. I call CDA; O.K, I can do it.

Day 3, I leave Glasgow for Montreal. I arrive in Montreal at 7pm and go straight to the ballroom in the Marriot Chateau Champlain from the airport to start rehearsals till midnight (or 5am Glasgow time). It was a whirlwind of an experience. Flying from the good news about my Mum and then flying from the whole experience of being with Celine and the gang again.

Darren: There must have been so much pressure on learning all these new routines and getting them perfect in such a short period of time, I can only imagine it being extremely tiring and stressful…

Chris: It was a mad dash to get me up to date with all the steps and then have them camera ready. My biggest worry was to make sure I didn’t look like ‘the new guy’. The dancers had already been touring and performing for many months and were very settled into the choreography – I needed to make sure I could blend in, and not stick out like the guy who doesn’t know what he is doing. To make matters worse – my very first performance would be the first night of filming, and there was a bunch of ‘A new day…’ family members watching that night too! Working with Melissa in the Spanish section was nerve wracking since she had been so accustomed to being with Aaron, and then here is this new guy throwing some very complex lifts with her; especially the ‘do-nut’, the overhead contortion lift that you see in the intro to Eyes On Me. I just remember being very focussed and determined to do well for the team. I needed to be focussed and do well for the team!

Just before we walked into the arena for that first performance I was overtaken by a severe bout of jet-lag, we were sitting waiting for Celine to come and ‘jig’ with us before we walked in, like she always did before every performance, I turned to Melissa and said I do not know how I am going to do this. I was wiped out. Celine took my hands and gave me great words of encouragement, and I remember thinking – Oh my god Chris, don’t screw up. Melissa took my arm as the security opened the curtain and walked us into the arena, the full house crowd in the Centre Bell went freaking crazy – I had never experienced a reaction, or noise, like that before. Some 20,000 people all screaming is enough to shock you into a state of awareness. I was clutching Melissa saying “Oh my god!” over and over again – she was laughing.

Celine started the show and Melissa and I escaped backstage to continue rehearsing. We ran the tango section again and again to make sure we had it down, right up until there was no time left. As we waited crouched down in the lift before the beginning of our show I was extremely focussed and breathing deep. As with all those kind of experiences, it was much of a blur – I just remember hitting everything that I was supposed to hit. The ‘rush’ experience did not get me till after the whole thing was done – I was on fire from excitement and adrenaline... and that is what makes this career so rewarding. Job well done.

We celebrated with all our ‘A New Day…’ friends on the Plateau in Montreal, and I crashed for a day – woke up, and got ready to do it all over again. I continued to learn and clean choreography each day off and by the next city, which I believe was Toronto, I was in good shape for more filming. The last number I learned was Man’s World, but that was not till later, hence the 3 guy version in the DVD.

Darren: The stage for the world tour was amazing in so many ways; the moving screens, the elevated wings into the audience, the moving vertical platforms, and the treadmills. But was the stage as fun as it looked, to perform on, or did you guys just make it look easy... as I would imagine it must have been exhausting, remembering where to be, the timing etc…

Chris: It was flat! Hallelujah! A flat stage – what a concept!!! It was a hard stage – solid steel, which did make it tough on the body when tumbling. The first time I stepped on the treadmill for Dans un Autre Monde, was the afternoon before the filming of the DVD. That was just too many things – I have to laugh about it now: new choreography, in fact 2 versions of the same choreography (Dans Un Autre Monde/Fade Away), lift choreography and then moving walkways to combat, get it right and then do it for 20,000 people and a DVD filming that night... and make sure I didn’t take out Celine in the process! Ah, good times.

Being crouched under the stage was an obstacle too. There were a few cities where we could escape backstage to keep warm and moving about. But there were also arenas where that was not possible, and then there were the ice rinks that we performed on top of. Keeping the body ready whilst Celine worked the crowd was a difficult task sometimes. It was a tough stage to perform, the shape of it and the travelling to all corners of it was definitely a cardio work out. In comparison, the proscenium version we did in regular theatres was a walk in the park since the staging was much simpler.

Darren: Was there ever any mechanical/wardrobe malfunctions that you can remember, either in rehearsals or during a live show on this tour?

Chris: For the 3 months I did the tour it was pretty plain sailing. There were a few cities where oil or something got on top of the stage – on the two ‘arms’ that went out into the audience. I think we all slid down it at one point, even Celine. She laughs it off in the DVD actually. I went to do the back somersault pass in I’m Alive – slid half way down the ramp and ended up throwing a rather plain looking jump instead. Other dancers will recall more serious happenings. Yves platform collapse and the broken screen at the Staples Center in L.A. spring to mind.

Darren: Ahhh, so that’s what caused her to fall, thanks for sharing that…

Darren: You travelled the U.S/Canada mostly on a tour bus… what was that like, and how did you spend you’re time on it?

Chris: All the dancers travelled together. It was great times actually, and in fact one of the things I miss most about the tour. The busses they have now-a-days are just incredible; we had our own little kitchen, bar, bunk, flat screen TV, DVD player, and satellite television. The journeys were sometimes hard, over 12 hours for some trips. Sleeping was not all that restful, but we always had the chance to get in to a real bed when we arrived at our destination hotel. ‘Coming down’ after a performance was hard and we’d often stay up late chatting and watching movies. You’d eventually end up crashing in your bunk from exhaustion. There was one instance when we went from (I think) Detroit to Toronto overnight with no day off in between. That included a border crossing, so your sleep was interrupted to go through passport control, and then you arrived in the city early, only having a few hours before we had to be at the venue. That was by far the hardest two days for me. Two huge shows back to back in two cities in two different countries!

Darren: For you personally, in the short time that you were there, what was the highlight of the Taking Chances World Tour?

Chris: It had to be my first performance. I will never forget it. It was rewarding on so many levels; accomplishment at getting it right, working with many of my good friends from the Colosseum. Sharing the stage with that perfect voice that is Celine, and experiencing the thousands upon thousands of loyal fans that make each performance unique and memorable.

Darren: What do you think of Celine fans, as I'm sure you have met quite a few of them over recent years… And what do you think of the video fans on the forum made as a ‘’thank you’’ to all involved with the Taking Chances tour?

Chris: Awesome video, congratulations! Celine fans are incredible. Loyal, enthusiastic, unbelievably supportive, they have given me some of the best moments on stage I have ever experienced. As an artist our biggest responsibility is to perform for the crowd, and to feel fans behind you all the way makes the job worthwhile. There is a ‘buzz’ in a Celine audience that I have not experienced with other artists; there is a ‘love’ in Celine audiences that I have not experienced with other artists. Celine says it time and time again – the fans are the ones responsible for the success. Us dancers are a small part of that equation. Thank you for your support and dedication. You are all a pleasure to perform in front of.

Darren: How much say do the dancers have in regards to the costumes you wear and do you still have you're costumes from both projects?

Chris: Normally we wear what we are given – we have a say if the costume is not functional and they can make it work for us, especially with shoes. Aaron and I needed great support for our feet since we were tumbling on a steel stage and Annie did a great job at finding us functional shoes that fit the style she wanted to show. Other than that we were very happy with the look of the show. We did get to keep some costume items and shoes from the tour but not from A New Day…

Darren: Do you know what happened to all the costumes/props from A new day… and did any of the dancers get given or purchase a piece of the Vegas stage like many fans did after the show ended, or were you all glad to see the back of it once and for all, after the final show, ha ha…

Chris: From what I understand all the costumes were archived some place. I don’t know if any of the dancers purchased part of the stage. I was definitely glad to see the back of it! Although I do know some dancers signed the stage that night, so whoever has those pieces has an extra touch of history.

Darren: What would you say was the most difficult routine to master for A new day… and the world tour, and why was this?

Chris: From A New Day… I Drove All Night was a challenge. It required a lot of technique to perform it precisely on the sloped stage. I would often do 3 sections of that number, and it never seemed to get any easier after 5 ½ years.

On tour it had to be I’m Alive. An unbelievable cardio work out. We travelled every inch of the stage, up and down slopes, stairs, tumbling and dancing. Again it never seemed to get any easier.

Darren: As you mentioned you are currently appearing in Cirque du Soleil's Viva ELVIS show at the ARIA Resort in Vegas... but with Celine returning to Vegas for a new show in March next year, will you be rejoining her onstage at the Colosseum?

Chris: No, I have no plans to join Celine when she returns. But never say never, right!

Darren: Exactly, ha ha…

Celine and Rene are obviously huge Elvis fans… have you seen them in the audience yet?

Chris: Yes, we saw Rene for our soft opening, December 16th 2009.

Darren: Celine is obviously not a dancer, but over the last two projects, like the dancers, she has worked with Mia and Jamie with choreography for both shows, and has showed off these skills onstage. But as a professional, what do you think of Celine’s dancing and do you think she could be pushed further, and dance more in the new show?

Chris: I think Celine does a fantastic job at what she is given and in fact we danced with her more during the creation of the show. Much of the choreography did not make it to the ‘final cut’ though. Celine is a natural performer and moves naturally and effortlessly, there is no need to push her in a different direction since what she gives is already perfect.

Darren: Any to my last question… how would you best describe Celine?

Chris: It is impossible to classify Celine in one paragraph. Her talent is unparalleled. Her dedication to her art is inspirational. She loves and cares for her close and extended family. She has an undying passion for music that makes me want to reflect it in my art form. She is one of the most influential women of current times, and I can but merely thank her, with heartfelt gratitude, for everything that her talent, her friendship and her support has afforded me in my life.

Darren: Chris its been a pleasure speaking to you today… thank you so much again for giving our forum this exclusive, and I hope to see you perform in ‘’Viva Elvis’’ next March when I’m in Vegas… take care.

Chris: Thank you, Darren. And thanks to all the fans who have supported us over the years. Big love.

Surely that had to be one of the best moments of the whole 5 year adventure  To see those legs uncovered for the first time in the show and Céline dancing in that dress... it had to rock the house :in_love: :w00t: And of course, the first time she sings those dance songs had to be very special in Céline's voice, after so many years singing TPOL and MHWGO wherever she goes :innocent:

Those are yet the special moments that lacks the AND DVD. The rehearsals of the songs, the first performance of a new song included, the withdrawn songs... etc.

Thank you very much Darren for this nice interview!! :flowers: :flowers: :flowers:

Fabulous interview Darren, he seemed like a really down to earth guy. Loved the bit about the tricks and gags they played on each other. Keep up the good work guys.

Cool interview! Thank you! Viva Elvis was already on my list to see when I go see Celine in Vegas, cause I'm a huge Cirque fan and love Elvis too. Now that I'll see some familiar faces, I want to see it even more.

Thank you so much for the interview! It's nice to hear about Celine from one of her dancer's perspectives!!! :)

Hey... was he that guy that flew in from Scotland to replace a dancer that was injured on her tour?? I knew he looked familiar :)

I still can't stop giggling at the "instead he got all the boys in their g-strings..." part

What a great read. He seems like a very down to earth and funny guy and obviously loves to talk like Celine. So, 2 more interviews left...one of them must be Celine herself. :whistling: You should interview more dancers to get hear more of these stories. :w00t: Thank you so much for these.
