Bellamy Posted May 22, 2010 at 03:07 PM Posted May 22, 2010 at 03:07 PM An Air India flight from Dubai carrying 166 people crashed into a heavily wooded valley moments after landing at an airport in southern India on Saturday morning, killing almost everyone on board. Aviation officials said that the pilot of the Boeing 737 missed the landing threshold, a critical portion of the runway at airports where runways are shorter because of hilly terrain, by as much as 2,000 feet. The plane veered off the runway and struck a concrete navigational aid called a localizer, according to Praful Patel, India’s aviation minister. The plane, a Boeing 737-800, was relatively new, having made its first flight in December 2007, according to the Aviation Safety Network. The 737-800 has been involved in five fatal accidents since entering service in 1998. The most recent was in January, an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Addis Ababa that crashed into the Mediterranean Sea in stormy weather shortly after takeoff from Beirut, killing 90 people. The cause of that accident remains under investigation. In February 2009, nine people died when a Boeing 737-800 operated by Turkish Airlines crashed on approach near Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Dutch investigators identified a faulty altimeter, which caused the plane to slow down too abruptly and stall at an altitude of around 2,000 feet. Sanat Kaul, a former aviation ministry official and a former member of Air India’s board of directors, said the runway at Mangalore airport sits on a plateau and was extended to 8,000 feet, from 5,500 feet in 2006 to better accommodate bigger planes like the 737.http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/23/world/asia/23india.html Feel Boeing 737 is not very safe. Bralo20 Posted May 25, 2010 at 10:13 AM Posted May 25, 2010 at 10:13 AM Feel Boeing 737 is not very safe. Sorry for the late reply but I'll have to disagree with you. The Boeing 737 is one of the most build airplanes in the world with 6.380 pieces build and 2.028 still on order. 148 incidents resulting in a hull loss occured since the start of production of the 737 back in the 1960's. This gives a total of 2,27% of hulls being losts due incidents. 2,27% is a very, very low number if your take the amount of planes being build under consideration. Most of those 148 hull losses occured with so called "originals". Boeing 737-100 / 737-200 "Original": 107 hull lossesBoeing 737-300 / 737-400 / 737-500 / 737-600 "Classic": 33 hull lossesBoeing 737-700 / 737-800 / 737-900 "Next Generation": 8 hull losses Unfortunately all 8 hull losses of the "Next Generation" series occured with a Boeing 737-800 series. None of them occured with the -700 and the -900. From those 8 incidents there are 6 that have a final incident report or the cause was obvious (for example: inflight collision, runway overrun, birdstrike,...). In 3 of those incidents there is a relation with technical problems. The 2 remaining occured recently and thus are still open to investigation. Now to place those numbers even more in perspective: 3.248 "Next Generations" (NG / NextGen) have been delivered untill this date, 8 of them were involved into an incident with a hull loss. This gives a total of 0,246% of hulls lost in the "NG" series. Trust me on this, the Boeing 737 "NextGen" is one of the most safest airliners flying arround on this date... Even Airbus has more hull losses with his A32x series (A318/319/320/321)... 21 hulls out of 2.292 planes were lost during the last decades which is nearly 1% (0,91% to be precise).... Unfortunately the most incidents with the Boeing 737 "NG" series occured in the last couple of years which gives the people a (wrong) though that a lot of Boeing 737's are crashing... Quote ...
Bralo20 Posted May 25, 2010 at 10:29 AM Posted May 25, 2010 at 10:29 AM (edited) That is one of the main reasons I haven't bought tickets for the new show yet. I am absolutely terrified of the whole flying thing. I have like a recurring dream about a plane that falls and I can hear the people screaming and stuff. It scares the crap out of me everytime... Flying is the most safest way of transportation. Yes, I have to admit, recently there are several planes that do crash. I'll be honest, there is absolute no way to rule out the posibility of a crash to the full 100%. A crash can occure anytime. Airbus for example tried to rule out the posibility of a "stall" (to give an example) due it's advanced computerized "fly by wire" system but even that isn't completely fool prove. However, the chances that a crash will occure are close to zero, I know it's all about statistics but in the end it is the truth... I'm passionate about aviation, I love flying a lot... Put me on a plane and I'm totally relaxed, nothing can scare me even for a bit... I've flewn through severe turbulence, I've flewn through severe thunderstorms and I loved it... It's amazing how much a (modern) airplane can withstand. Even when the plane is shaking like hell and when it seems you're rinding on a roller coaster I'm still totally relaxed, just because I love aviation and I know a lot of it... I know that the chances that something happens are close to zero so why the hell worry about it? Relaxe, have a drink and enjoy the bumpy or smooth ride... And in the very unlikely event that something does happen I just hope that it will be over quick... You know, even walking on the street is way more dangerous then taking any airplane... Even that old Douglas DC3 that is covered with brush in some forest and you'll take it for a fly after it hasn't flew for dozens of years is still safer to take then walking by foot...
