Irish music

Hi everyone !

 

I'm creating this topic because - once again - I need your help.

A friend of mine is going to celebrate his birthday, and he absolutely loooooooooooooves the folk that fills the irish lands.

So, I came up with the idea of making him a CD, with the most beautiful irish songs.

 

My problem: I don't know any

 

Except The Corrs and Cara Dillon.

 

So, can you please tell me which songs are great, by who, etc etc...

 

And you? what do you think of Irish music?

I think it's a music that we do not only listen to, but that we feel.

Listen to Mary Black. She has one of the purest voices ever. It's rich and powerful like no other folk singer I've heard.

It was either 97 or 98, in Belfast after filming of a programme called ''Making a difference'' loads of celebs were there to pay tribute to normal people who had been nominated for doing/being someone special and making a difference in people lives.... anyways they were there to present an award, and I met them, Westlife, Honor Blackman, and lots of other celebs at the after party at The Europa Hotel/Club.

Some music by bands like The Saw Doctors would be great too! They are a great favourite here. Or the Wolftones maybe? Sharon Shannon is a great trad musician too and well worth looking up!

'Galway Girl' is one of my favourite songs I guess, you grow up listening to Irish songs, you like them when you're older, and of course, living in Irelandm you heat them at every opportunity that presents itself!

I only know Enya and Clannad (her family band where she belonged for 2 albums). Enya is one of the greatest singers in the world next to Céline for me :in_love:

No way!! :o I never heard that, and she's my #2 fav. singer behind Céline!! Do you remember where you read that please? I only know that in the For Keeps book one of her producers wanted to make a record with the Enya sound for her, but nothing directly from Céline's mouth about her!
