Celine is the featured artist - confirms album sales. Once you had all singles of which two have sold more than a million, there is a large amount sold. Here is what it says.....

 

•Hailing from Quebec, Canada, Dion won the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland in 1988

 

•Dion had sold an impressive 9m albums in the UK by the end of 2009, achieving 5 UK number 1 albums in that time.

Céline Presented With Most Expensive Disc Ever

Yesterday in London, England, Céline was presented with the most expensive disc ever in recognition of 15 million album and single sales in the UK. The disc is a one-off, designed and manufactured by the Queen's jewellers Asprey & Garrard.

 

"I feel honoured to be receiving such a precious award. But, at the same time, I know that our children are the most important part of our lives. They bring out the good in the world and they give us hope. I'm thrilled that I can donate this award to 'Help A London Child' and I thank everyone involved with this charity," said Céline.

 

The disc was presented to Céline on Thursday, March 21 by 95.8 Captial FM's Chris Tarrant, who is a patron of the charity.

 

"I've always been a bit of a Céline fan, and to have something like this donated to Capital's 'Help A London Child' is just fabulous. If it can raise anything close up to £50,000 - then it'll help us help a lot of needy kids in London," said 95.8 Capital FM's Chris Tarrant.

 

Set in solid silver, the disc features a full-length gold silhouette of Céline Dion, sprinkling 15 handcrafted individually cut diamonds across a black acrylic landscape frame - plus a diamond set Céline logo. Each diamond is mounted in a 5-point white-gold star, representing each of Céline's album and single sales in the UK. In total, the piece contains over 2.5 carats of diamonds.

 

Following its presentation to Céline, the disc was delivered by 'special security' to HMV's flagship store at 150 Oxford Street, Oxford Circus in London, England. This will be displayed in their window until Wednesday, March 27. Whilst at HMV, the disc will be guarded by 24-hour security.

 

"HMV are delighted to display this truly exceptional disc at our flagship store in Oxford Street, and we would encourage fans to see for themselves just how spectacular it is. We are sure that this will help raise a lot of money for the HALC charity."

 

HMV Oxford Circus customers will be able to pick up details of the 'Help A London Child' charity auction along with information about making bids, via a special in-store leaflet.

 

The disc will go on show at the 'star-studded' Capital Awards lunch @ the Royal Lancaster Hotel, on Wednesday, March 27, and put on display for invitees to place pre-bids. The disc, will then be delivered to Asprey & Garrard, Old Bond Street, W1 - where it will be displayed in their window, until it is auctioned 'live on Capital FM' on Sunday, March 31.

 

Her sales in the UK are very impressive indeed.

Also the figure doesn't cover a (comparatively) small percentage of UK retailers, as well as excluding record club sales, which whilst not being as big in the UK as they are in the US, are still significant enough to tip a certification (for e.g. Michael Jackson and Queen both have 250k+ club sellers)*.

 

Therefore, over the counter sales are only one way of measuring (in the US, the equivalent would be Soundscan sales). I apply a more liberal method; estimating her UK and world shipments is without doubt the most comprehensive estimation of her (and any artist) sales. In toltal, her UK album shipments are approaching 11m. Where does that leave her against other females?

Whitney Houston - 11m albums

Barbra Streisand - 9m albums

Kylie Minogue - 8.5m albums

Diana Ross - 8.5m albums

Mariah Carey - 7.5m albums

 

And so on, and so forth. As well as 19m albums, Madonna has sold 17m singles, making her by far the best-seller in the UK. The closer battle lies between Whitney & Celine; both have sold a similar number of albums, but Whitney has sold about 750,000 more singles. In total, Celine is at about 17.5m records, and Whitney on around 18.25m records. So as of now, Whitney is slightly ahead. But Celine releases soon, and both continue to chart well with their hits collections.

I meant to say 15 million. having checked certified awards and I know this is only shipments Celine is at 10.6 million (7.4 million albums and 3.2 million singles) records and Whitney is 8.5 million, it would be good to know exactly what sales are but its impossible, although its good to know 9 million albums have been sold in the uk, which shows she is at least 5 x platinum under certified.
