Children mean everything to her! For many years global star Céline Dion (41) has been donating millions for poor and sick children all over the world. But not many people knew about her sad secret that seems to be behind all of this. In an exclusive interview with NEUE WELT the singer talks openly about her stroke of fate that she will never forget, and about her heart's desire.

NEUE WELT: You are very involved with children in need...

Celine Dion: Every minute 11 children have to starve! We have to be active and do something about it, instead of spending money on drugs.

 

How did it happen that you support a foundation for genetic diseases?

This happened because of a very private and sad reason. I was there when my beloved niece Karine, the daughter of my sister Liette (59), died.

 

How did it happen?

She died at the age of 16 of cystic fibrosis in my arms.

 

You recently had a misscarriage?

It was a great shock for all of us and great disappointment, especially after this long and complicated procedure of IVF. I do not want to sit here complaining, because I am not the only woman who has to go through something like this. My husband René and I will simply try again, or a few times, until it works. My doctor is very optimistic that I can get pregnant for a third time. I would love to have as many children as my parents did but it is too late for that now, I am going to be 42 soon!

 

Did you tell your son that you were expecting?

Of course I did!

 

How did you explain to him that he has to wait a little longer?

He wanted to know a lot and I told him everything without going into too much medical detail. René-Charles was looking at me directly and asked: “But you are still going to try Mummy?” And after I had answered he nodded contently and said: “Well, I'm going to wait a little longer then.” That kid is a stroke of luck for me!

 

Did you sing him to sleep when he was little?

I sang for him already during my pregnancy, in the morning while I was in the shower.

 

So, your son became a fan of yours before he was even born?

Well I have to admit that when I was singing for him at night he would start to scream!

 

Millions of people adore your voice and your own child protests?

That is how it was. My husband was very amused.

 

Nine years ago a your husband was diagnosed with cancer...

We both are of the opinion that in such a situation you really only have two options: either

you despair and give up and ask the stupid question “Why me?” or take on that challenge.

 

Were you afraid that your husband was going to die?

Very afraid, even after his treatments had ended.

 

Who is Céline Marie Claudette Dion?

A woman that constantly carries a photo of her being pregnant around with her in the hope that she might be lucky again: to become a mother of a healthy child again.

I can perform in sold out stadiums, people cheering, calling my name, a good feeling that makes me happy. But if I had to choice to exchange all of that for a newborn baby, I would do it in a heartbeat!

I think Celine might be telling the world that she would be fine if it does not work, but you can tell that she really really wants it and that it hurts her more than what she is letting on. It breaks my heart to know that there are people that throw their children away or abuse them, and here Celine is, desperately wanting a baby, but she can't get pregnant.

And the miscarriage...that had to be hard on her. It'd be hard on any woman...I get the impression that her way of dealing with it is just trying again...but what if it never happens? That loss would surely make it harder on her if all her efforts come to nothing in the end..

I don't even want to think about it... And I don't know whether or not it is true, but I've heard that you actually reach a point where your chances become even less the more you go through IVF.

 

Last night when I read the article and I read that part about how her doctor is optimistic that she can get pregnant for a third time, it was as if it actually sunk in for the first time that wow she was pregnant and she really did have a miscarriage...
