I still don't understand why her Grammy Award performance is so highly praised. In my opinion it's one of the worst performances she did of the song in the 90s. The high notes were shaky and uncertain. Her Rosie O'Donnell one is the best.

But why is that so impressive? Celine had sung that song dozens of times by that point, and surely if someone had told her 5 minutes before the show that she was singing MHWGO, she'd be prepared? She didn't have to learn anything or prepare a performance. The orchestra might have had a job of learning it perfectly at the last minute, but other than that? She could have done a lot better vocally.

i think what made the oscar performancenot only technical stuff about her voice.. but also the whole mood.. the whole orhrchestra, "fake fog" that the article talked about... and the whole hype at this point.. this was the time that titanic fever was really peaking....

what are you talking about !!?? actually it was the first time ever that she sang the song LIVE , she didnt get to practice the notes or anything, the song was completely new for her, other than the demo recording.

Um, no it wasn't. She sang the song on the Rosie O'Donnell Show on November 18, 1997 just like the other person pointed out. Her performance at the Oscars was on March 24, 1998.

I did not love that performance. I thought the orchestra was pretty terrible. They were playing the song so slowly, and it felt like Celine was battling their tempo the whole time. The notes were good, but it never gelled.

 

I Knew I Loved You, The Prayer, and I've Finally Found Someone were all way better performances, in my opinion. I would have definitely picked I've Finally Found Someone to recognize. That was such a dramatic moment, with the substitution at the last second, and Celine absolutely nailed the song. It was just perfect.

The orchestra was freaking horrible. They did not know how to play the song correctly. Celine was forced to hold her notes longer in order for the tempo to match her vocals. I thought her voice was amazing, but the orchestra really screwed up, (not to mention the idiot that went flat with the Irish tin whistle at the bridge).
