fred Posted January 7, 2010 at 12:06 AM Posted January 7, 2010 at 12:06 AM Just saw that in 2008 Sofia Källgren released an album titled Cinema Paradiso, with some movie songs on it. Among them were The Prayer and My Heart Will Go On. The Prayer - must be the most covered Céline tune (correct me if I'm wrong) even though it did not become such a huge hit (was it ever a single?) and Sofia covers it as a solo version, which I think is smart coz I am personally way tired of thoses wannabe-Céline-and-Andrea duets. I cannot say it is swell, coz nothing compares to the original and I am a bit irritated by so many covering this tune when the original voices are totally in a league of their own. My Heart Will Go On - how anyone dares to cover this song is beyond me. Sofia's version is interesting since it almost smells more Titanic than Céline's version thanks to its intro and outro, where Sofia is singing the Rose-track inspired "oooo"s that we can find Céline sing on the AND DVD menu. After a more than one minute intro she sings the lyrics (for 2 minutes and 20 sec) in a dreamstate like sound. After that the outro ends it all, and the song is over surprisingly fast. The cover is interesting, it isn't bad, but far from brilliant. I would like to see Sofia use more vocal powers (this goes for both tunes). Sofia's pipes are quite wonderful but I have the feeling she "sings it safe". And even though the song is approached from a more Titanic angle than the original, I would love to see it being less than the original in so many other cases (the flute for example could had been exchanged for another instrument - and it wouldn't hurt a bit, it would actually lift it) and it would be welcomed more warm heartedly by the Céline fans, which I am pretty sure this version won't. Looked on youtube to find some clips, but found none from the album (however, Spotify users can find the album by searching for Sofia Cinema Paradiso). But I did find her singing The Prayer, but in a duet version (with Cai Dasheng), on youtube. You can . It's curious to see Sofia's Céline connections except Peer Astrom: in 1992 she and Swedish singing sensation Tommy Körberg recorded the Swedish version of Beauty and the Beast, she performs every now and then with Robert Wells and in 2004 she recorded backing vocals for Céline's Ain't Gonna Look The Other Way. /fred Quote Peace and love to all.
