Janis Ian's big hit may be decades old, but she and it remain in public consciousness

Over the past three decades, folk singer Janis Ian, known for iconic '70s song "At Seventeen," has watched her career ebb and flow. Recently, the 58-year-old artist had an experience that has her feeling as though she's once again on an upswing.

 

"It's funny how it happens," said Ian, calling from Larchmont, N.Y. "I was just at an awards dinner talking to Taylor Swift, the country artist who is pretty young, and her dad said, 'Taylor, this is Janis Ian, who wrote "At Seventeen."' And I was curious because she's so young. So I said, 'Taylor, do you know that song?' And she said, 'Oh God, yes, Celine Dion did it.'

 

"I thought that's really funny because three years ago people were coming to my show because they saw it in (feature film) 'Mean Girls,' and now it's Celine Dion. It has a life of its own, that song."

It's amazing the legacy of music. There Taylor was knowing nothing about Janis just that Celine sang At Seventeen. Some songs are just timeless, same thing happen to me with songs like All by myself, At Last and others. I didn't know anything about Eric Carmen or Etta James until Celine did the songs...

You think Celine recorded hundreds of songs during the 90s just for the heck of it, knowing her voice was at her full potential then and that now those songs are hidden and stored somewhere and one day she will suprise everyone and will release them? :hmm:

 

I think that would be the biggest suprise EVER for her fans when she'll be like 60 yrs old... :wheelchair:

Sometimes when Celine records a song she has performed live the results aren't as good, in my opinion. The studio versions of Dance With My Father, What A Wonderful World, If I Could, The First Time Ever... are far less interesting to me than the original live version. They're missing the energy and emotion of the stage performance and I usually miss these songs out in favour of the live version.

 

When I heard Celine sing TFTEISYF in the TAST special I was blown away, still am to this day! The simplicity of the arrangement and emotion in her voice is incredible. The studio version was overdone and turned into another big, show-off number. I would be nervous that At Seventeen would end up overdone in a similar way.

I felt exactly the same as you about the live version of TFTEISYF. :wub: I remember staying to myself that the studio version was too slow and lacked the emotion of the amazing live acoustic version she did with her band. It was so great and sounded perfect to me. So I was dissapointed that the live version was not the one on the cd.

 

And it's not the first time a live Céline cover was much better then the studio version they did afterward. I agree completely Thomas. I don't know what it is exactly but maybe when it gets in the hand of a producer, it kind of looses its fresh and simple sound without the emotion and simplicity Céline gave to it originally when performed live with her band members. I guess I've preferred often over the years Céline's and Mégo's vision of how to do covers she chooses without the input and idea of some big producer.
