My Heart Will Go On

Everytime I bring up "My Heart Will Go On" people have a problem with it. A huge problem with it. I don't get why. I mean, it's a gorgeous song with an even MORE gorgeous voice behind it!

 

Part of me thinks it's just the fact that it's associated with Titanic, but I've heard at least one person say it's probably because not many have been able to acquire a vocal range as wide as Celine's, and this song is a TRUE example of her vocal range.

 

Was just wondering if anyone else had other reasons to hate "My Heart Will Go On." Whether you hate it or not.

I personally have no idea why anyone would hate that song, unless they just hate Céline.

What??? No, it's not!!!! This song is painfully slow and boring compared to her best. There are two Eb5's in this song that last about 1 second a piece...she has belted F5 for 10 seconds...now THAT is an example of vocal range. Additionally, this song didn't feature anything outside of chest voice. Not to mention all the verses were sung in the same tone for 90% of the song. Never raised her tone once until the last 30 seconds. ALSO, There were essentially no belts, which is what she is best at (okay, the ending note but put that in a collection of her belts and it's the least impressive...not as high nor long).

 

People hate it because it's slow and boring to them (I personally hate the CD version of it but can tolerate and sometimes love the live performances). When people think of Celine Dion, they immediately think of painfully slow songs like this, and before I came a fan, so did I! And to be honest, can't blame them. Of all her "hits" this is her least impressive in terms of vocals.

 

This is why they hate Celine too. They see her as nothing more then the Titanic singer, singing slow boring unimpressive sappy love songs that no one wants to hear unless your wanting to take a nap. She is so much more then this one song, and it's a shame that most never get to see what!

People are jealous and frustrated about other people' success and talent. Thats it! (Thats why they hate it, usually they hate the rest of it too (celine))

I shut everybody's face when i say that to people who disses Celine.

 

Personnaly i like MHWGO but i don't think its her best... in MY opinion.

I think most people associate it with mushiness and sappiness. Which just means they are probably lonely.

I think another reason for some people to hate it is mostly because it was over-played by some radios. It was so huge!

 

I personnally like this song and I don't often hear people around me dissing this song particularly because it wasn't over played where I live, they play a lot of her many other french and english songs. Like it was said before, when they hate this one, they usually don't like Céline's songs in general anyways.

I never heard that song on the radio here in France.

I think that song sounds too much "cliché", just like Celine sounds in France.

I personnaly hate that song. Moreover, MHWGO killed in a way the career of Celine. After MHWGO, she was considered as "the Titanic singer, the ballad diva...". And she still be, no matter what she tries to do now.

well for me i didn't have much feeling for the song at late 97 but i think after like maybe around 98 or so i listen to it more and felt in love with the song!

I think what the others said is true.

Some don't like it just because they don't like soppy emotional love ballads. Others liked it the first 291473829 times, and are now just sick of it. It's kind of like when you say a word over and over again until it loses all meaning! (I still love it, but while it used to be one of my favorites, it's not so much now.)

I like this song a lot, it was HUGE when it was released, everyone knows it of course, but that's has been like a double-edged sword.

 

I think both general public and fans can hate this song for the same reasons: it has been clearly overexploited. In the radios, by Céline in her concerts everywhere, in every TV show she does... People and fans got sick of it

like people said above; it's been overplayed, and it's critized as a boring, sappy love song. The worst thing IMO is that her biggest song, isn't her best song It's weird in a way, cos people 'hate' the song, but if céline is somewhere and doesn't sing it, people be like 'why didn't she sing the titanic song!?'. But i do think that it's wrong to still have this song as the final encore in concerts. that's probably worse than still having LCMM in the show

 

My favourite live version is the one of the Childerns Day concert and I think that the original demo version, on the titanic soundtrack, is better than the album version on LTAL.

Yeah i remember back then in 1998, the radio station play this song 3 times in a row..... i personally never really like this song.

I never tire of hearing this song. You would think that, after 12 years, I wouldn't be able to stand this song. However, it's stunningly beautiful. The lyrics are simple (as truth is), the melody is gorgeous and Celine sings the song with an honest mixture of heartache and joy (in that original recording). I agree with what others have said in that I think the reason that most people hate it have to do with A) It was over-played on the radio, every terrible singing mother/sister/brother/wife/friend has sung it at your wedding/funeral/birthday party, C) We live in an incredibly cynical world that doesn't want to hear mention of the word of "love", not to mention hearing a song about love sung by a woman who can give so much of it through her voice. I don't understand the people who don't like it because she doesn't hit high enough notes or belt enough - I guess it's because that's not why I listen to Celine or think that she's the greatest singer of our generation. There are MANY singers on Broadway and in jazz who can sing as high, if not higher than Celine. *I* listen to Celine because of the emotion with which she puts into her songs whether she's singing them fast or slow, loud or quiet, in her head voice or chest voice or mixed, whether in french or in english. She touches my heart and my soul.

Agree with Davey that the "World Children's Day" concert version of the song is just brilliant but yeah I can understand the general apathy towards "My Heart Will Go On."

 

It was badly overplayed for a good 2 years after it was released and even now continues to be exploited by Sony and Celine. It seems even they can't move on from it.

 

Just look at the success the song had around the world though in terms of charts and sales. Surely it's not hated that much!!

I love the song but I think that people may hate it because

1. it is associated with Titanic and people tend to make fun of the movie yadaya

2. it was so over played at the time when the movie came out and people tend to react negatively to a song that is over played on the radio etc.

I hate when the media say for Celine: The ''titanic singer'' did this.... or the "my heart will go on'' singer did that...

There was one period that i didnt want to listen to this song, which I really love and think her performance is great there. The reason was that everybody was talking about the titanic singer and not for Celine.. She has a great career of more than 25 years. so it's a pity to refer to her as the titanic singer.... Ofcourse not everybody knows all the stepsa of her career but again it's not nice to call her the titanic singer.

I have never been a huge fan of this song but I don't think that people actually hate it. It's more like...we've had enough of it. And, yes, of course, Celine is much more than 'the Titanic singer' but many people just don't know this. They probably think that since MHWGO is her greates hit, it's her best song. But we, Celine's real fans, know for sure that she's done greater (and better) things through the years.

Celine is one of the world's best singers, and it's a real shame that she's known by so many people simply by "The queen of the Titanic" , BUT I have to admit that I started loving Celine the first time I listened to My heart will go on; it's one of my favourite songs!

I definetly think it's because it was overplayed on the radio, it was always on the radio so people just got sick of it.

it's really wierd but actually i remember skipping this track of mhwgo on the ltal album for no reason just when i here the biginning i automaticly press next and it reminded me of what celine said that she didnt like at first lol, but after that i love it love it love cause it brings back lots of good memories

Well I don't hate My Heart Will Go On (or any other Céline's songs for that matter), how could I hate it, cause it's the one song I first consciously heard of her and it's because of that song that I first became a fan!! So it means everything to me! Though it's no longer my favourite song from her, but it has a very special meaning to me.

 

Don't know why some people hate it so much.

I am sure there will be loads of people who will say, Céline should have sung that song! LOL
