Being Around People Who Don't Like Celine

Any of you been in a situation where your listening to Celine (say, in a car) and your friends or family just HATE it and go crazy and beg for you to turn it off?

 

Lol, unfortunately I have. The only time my Dad will listen to her is if I practicually force him too.

 

This past weekend, we had a road trip and I played a few of her songs (I try to stick to the up-tempo ones for him, lol) and he said she needs to stop being black (in reference of LCMM, DOL, THLAL). He covered his ears during Can't Help Falling In Love With You (he's an Elvis fan) and said the big note almost made his ears bleed (but did say it was nice, lol). So then I put on a playlist of rock/pop that is popular today and on the radios and stuff. 40 songs later, Taking Chances comes up (okay, so it isn't popular/on the radio but it's the same genre, lol) and he's like, ugh, I hate to say this but that Celine song was the best song on the playlist! But don't tell anyone, I'll deny it. LOL

 

A few months before that, he ASKED if he could listen to "The Reason" because I had told him before it was previously supposed to be an Aerosmith song and he said, "I hate to say this, but I actually kinda liked it." And then on that same day he listened to Taking Chances, Alone, That's Just The Woman In Me, part of Think Twice, Fade Away and said it's amazing how she can sing many different types of songs. He seemed nicer about her that day, lol!

 

Another time, I made my Mom watch the AND DVD. She said, GOD I CANT TAKE ANYMORE OF THIS "CHURCH MUSIC" .......but she did say PQTME was a "pretty song" and that MHWGO is the greatest love song of all time *gag*. Why does all the non-fans love MHWGO (which many of us on here can hardly tolerate)?

 

And my sister gets mad with all the Celine talk, but she has about 12 of her songs on her iPod (including one that I don't even have!!). So I've made her a minor fan, lol.

 

So, any of you had to deal with similar situations?

I will tell my sister to give your dad a call...they will be friend in a heart beat! LOL she hates Celine ( but she even went to Vagas and she saw the show!!! ( she was inviated by some friends of course!!) she was very touched ONLY because she knows how much Celine means to me...

Although I know if I make her listen to some cool songs she will have a different vision ( she has the chessy Celine version..you know MHWGO or Beauty and the beast)

I don't care if people around me don't like Celine, honestly. And that goes for any artist i'm a fan of. If they don't like them, that is their prerogative. Doesn't really bug me, as long as I like them it's not an issue.

I always manage to slip some Celine songs on every playlist or CD I make

but just like you, my little sister was like.. can't you listen to something else?

but now, when I go downstairs, I've heard her singing.. so far... I'm alive, that's the way it is..

because you loved me lol, so I find it funny, and just like you said, the

taking chances album, works pretty well they liked a lot of the songs, even my

little brother! who is pretty special with his music, he actually really likes To Love You More,

because of the violin..

But the Vegas DVD, how can someone not like it? I've showed it to some of my friends

who thought she was "boring" when I first started giving my Celine introduction.. like

biggest selling female artist of all time, 5 years on vegas, sold out bla bla bla, and they

are always impressed but whatever, but after they have watched the DVD they always tell me later

guess what, I now have Celine on my ipod lol and my whole family loved it too

I Know what you mean, I don't care either I will keep listening to her, but

I've found it funny so far, that they end up kind of liking her after they actually

hear some of her songs, and know a bit more

I don't really care either if they don't like her music, but it makes me mad when they're like, "DONT YOU LISTEN TO ANYTHING ELSE" or "TURN THAT B**** DOWN" (<<< I yelled at my Mom after she said that, lol).

You know i find it amazing what the a new day DVD can do !!! Ive showed it to most of the people i no and they have all ended up buying the dvd themeselves or puting her music on their ipods, songs such as MHWGO AND i drove all night an im alive and especially River deep mountain high on the DVD make all the people i no love Celine and make them want more and more of her. i can offically say i have made celine at least 15 new fans of her since i started loving her.

LOL! My mom hates her (actually this makes me sad because I sometimes feel that a Celine show is definitely something a mother and daughter should experience together). My brother cannot stand her. But my dad loves her. He actually has some of her CDs and he says that there is no better female singer than her.

at first my family was like omg can we just listen to one other artist for a chance... then they got used to it and now they'll even sing along on road trips and my mom will even request IACBTMN but they tend to like the older more popular songs that they know the words and ABM Think twice and MHWGO makes my mom cry and then I end up crying lol

 

I got my mom to go to the concert with me and she said it was the best concert she's ever been to and she saw AND in theaters with me and ended up crying after saying that she regretted not getting me tickets for my 16th birthday during the last year she was there- i begged for these tickets but vegas was too far and we didn't have the funds either... but I WILL BE THERE when she returns.. whenever that is...

 

but pretty much everyone I talk to respects her voice

 

all my friends hate céline but like some of her songs and they still think she's old which she totally isn't but whatever that's their opinion

 

but what I'm really afraid of is going to college and having everyone shun me lol I'm not ashamed and I'll tell everyone that I'm a fan but I'm a dance major and we all know how MOST dancers love Céline so I hope to meet more fans there and introduce them to the forum

It does get very TIRING! I am around people who take music very seriously....and they only like a handfull of Celine's songs. Most people just consider her outdated - or full of herself. I am sick of people responding to her with "she has a big voice and she's not afraid to show it." It's these people who have never heard her French songs - or her more intimate songs. Incredibly frustrating!

 

But I've found in recent years - that, while I LOVE it when others like her - it's really about me. I know that I love her voice. And that's good enough. When I'm with others - I'll gladly listen to their music...I need to expand my musical vocabulary anyway.

When I was younger I would always bring her up with people who didn't care, and they would be mean. But I realized that I needed to be around people who were accepting of me and my choices. Now, my friends all accept it and go along with me, and for people I'm less comfortable with, I try to make a joke out of it, or I just don't mention it. There's more to me than being a Celine fan, after all.

Well, I was a huge Celine fan. My brother couldn't stand her, and my sister didn't like her, and my mom hated her.

 

A few days of me playing my Celine mix cd over and over, my mom still 'thinks she's stuck up' but likes her voice and music, and even was amazing that Taking Chances, Alone, Fade Away, Sil Suffiset D'aimer[spelled out of memory] was Celine and my sister is a certified mini fan and went to TCWT with me. My brother thinks she is good, but wouldn't call himself a fan, and my sister in law, who was so against her, has become a mini fan as well, and cries when she watches the AND dvd mwahaha

Oh! And my dad isn't a Celine fan, really, like he doesn't specifically look for her music, but he is always complimenting her voice

All of my friends absolutely hate her... They make fun of her and it's very annoying. I have tried several times to get them to like her, by playing the A New Day DVD.. playing her music in the car.. and it's really quite funny because i will always be like "ok guys.. i'm going to put in Celine.." and i always get the "noooooo... shoot me..." reaction.. but then i'll put on like Beauty and the Beast or My Heart Will Go On, Or IACBTMN.. and they are like.. "oh i love this song" ugh.. people are so confusing sometimes it's ridiculous. I'm not sure how it is in other countries, but it seems like a lot of Americans (non-fans) have a negative view of Celine, and they look at her as a big joke and over the top diva and someone who is just not cool.. which yes.. she is not a lady gaga, or a Britney spears.. but that's what makes her great! She isn't a skank and can actually sing.. no offense to Britt fans.. Everyone thinks of Celine Dion as old.. someone who had her career in the 90's... but what a majority of Americans don't get, is she is still one of the biggest artists in the world.. kinda like the Michael Jackson of Divas..Anyway.. Yet i see her in other countries and read comments here on the forum from fans from around the world and it seems as if she is a lot more popular in Europe than in the U.S.

Personally i don't give a damn if someone doesn't like her. Shes my idol, and I look up to her. It doesn't matter to me if someone doesn't like her, its their loss.

My bestfriend and I were always arguing about the same thing Chuck Norris vs. Celine . He is a big Chuck Norris fan.He doesnt really used to like Celine that much exept MHWGO.One day i showed him the A New Day.. DVD and he loved it then i played I Love You and he adored the song and he dedicated it to his girlfriend. So basically i made him a loyal Celine FAN!! Sooo. Im Proud.

I don't care much if people around me like Celine or not. Actually, it's not...normal if everyone likes the same things. Come to think of it, i don't have friends who like celine exept here But the most of them dont care if i listen to her or not. It is my business and they can go to hell if it is too hard for them to understand how big of a fan i am Period

Just don't understand why you have to judge what one person listens to it's his thing...

Well i just recently learned that all my friends aren't true friends after all . I got a big group of friends and they all just treat me like a piece of muck on there shoe. And my Friends All like Rock metal and stuff so to like celine would be a miracle for them . BUT Its so F****** Annoying when im listening to her on my ipod and the same person Kyle Always says to me " let me guess Stupid Celine Again " then all my friends will laugh , then the next minute when for example if i bring er up and start talking about her and how i HATE Celine Haters and i would punch their lights out HAHA . then thats when they all start saying to me " oh i think she's a good singer " Now That makes me mad , one minute they diss me for listening to her and give me horrible looks when they are SUPPOSED to be my friends then they say they like her OMG.

 

But family Wise , My mam Loves her always has but shes not as big a fan as me , my mam practically brought me up on celine as well as all the 90's tunes And also my sisters like her a little my big sister went through a phase of being obsessed with celine ahah she convinced herself she was going to get 2 dogs and call one Celine And One Dion . ( my parents think im going through a phase too because i am exaclty like my big sister and they think i will not like her by the time next year comes , YEAH RIGHT )

 

but my dad is an AC/DC Fan so he always goes on about how * Rubbish * her cover of you shook me all night long was. which i think it was great haha.

 

so yeah i always get embarrassed and scared to tell people i like celine as i dno what they will say But my motto is " you're not a true fan if your embarrased "

Well I have the same kind of friends as you have, they listen to mostly metal etc. and I listen too but I like Celine more and I've got some of them to listen and I know everyone of them likes her music they just don't want to admit it. But what makes me mad as hell is that they always say she's old and her career is over and that's when I would like to punch their lights out.

Everyone in my family likes Céline and I'm happy abt that

You'll find as you age that you won't give 2 figs as to what people think about your favourite artists. After all, it's Celine who laughs all the way to the bank as the best selling female artist in the world.

 

She's not hurting for fans. But don't overkill for your friends and family.

I am one of Céline's fans that LOVES MHWGO! It's so true what David Foster said (can't quote exactly - "The song fueled the movie and the movie fueled the song.")

 

I was a fan of Céline's when she first came to the U.S. (long before MHWGO). I have friends and family that lovingly tease me for my "fancination" with Céline. But they all say the same thing, "You can't deny she has a great voice!"

I don't have any friends who HATE Celine, but I only have one friend who's some sort of fan. She has a couple of her records. But I've forced my other friends and family like her a bit too by playing her music so often.

 

As a teenager I was a little bit embarrassed to be a Celine fan because I didn't know anyone who liked her, but nowadays I'm too old to get embarrassed about such a thing. Because there isn't anything to be embarrassed of in being a Celine fan.

i actually have a couple of friends who love celine alot, who i went to her concert with, and my friend was crying her eyes out. But alot of my other friends love her too, just dont listen to her on their own, or like don't know anything about her. But the second i turn celine on, they all dance and know every lyric.

 

My dad isn't a fan, but he'll listen to her music, and he teachs me her french lyrics, cause he lived in France, but he does always say what a gorgeous legs she has lol.

 

So being around people who don't like her doesn't bug me, it just drives me crazy when people go out of their ways to express their hatred. Everyone associates celine with the titanic song.. and for most, that song is so overplayed, its so easy to make fun of it. So i think people have a hard time realizing that there's more to her than that lovey dovey song. But i do think that even if your not a die hard celine fan, or you don't listen to her music, nobody can deny that she's got extreme talent.

 

Its amazing that no matter how much someone says they dislike her, they still sing along to her songs if its playing.

Growing up, people definitely made fun of me for liking Céline. It was that weird adolescent stage. they would have made fun of me for most anything, kids are mean then. But being a huge Céline fan, the ONLY Céline fan in your school, well, it was tough sometimes! I never really let it get to me, I just didn't UNDERSTAND how people couldn't see what I saw in her and heard in her voice. It really baffles me, to this day even! I met one other Céline fan in college and only until the tour this past year did I meet any other people my age (or any age) that were huge fans. When I found the forum I felt like I had found MY PEOPLE haha.

 

My boyfriend didn't understand. He doesn't really have a preference of any kind of music. he has no favorites so he doesn't get it I guess. Especially when I have loved Céline for almost 20 years and I have known him for 5. Now I have things I want to talk to him about but he doesn't want to hear it. He used to tell me I was obsessed. I have finally gotten him to sit down and watch youtube clips with me and the LV DVD. I think I finally got it across to him that it's not obsession, she's just the best! He actually admires her now and agrees she is far more talented than anyone on the radio these days. It is a slow process but I am winning him over to the Dion side haha.

 

It really is difficult when the one you love doesn't support/understand your forever favorite. If he had a favorite I would gladly listen to him excitedly talk about a cool new song or an AWESOME dance move (haha) in a video or something, if only just to see his face light up and get excited! But alas.

 

I am glad my mom and I got to go to 4 shows this tour together. She understands cause she has seen me grow up loving Céline above all others and she loves to see me excited at a show! She thinks I have picked a very good role model in Céline, and she listens to her all the time at home too

well no one in my direct family and friends really like her like I do, but some do like songs or even may have an album laying somewhere...

 

the most frustrating thing I always find, is when people say; She is such a diva! (in the negative way!) I always defend her, telling people she's not etc... but they will only believe the image they have!
