Who is still using dialup to connect to the Internet?

Wonder how many members are on dialup. I've been on a broadband connection since 2001.

I understand what you mean. I live in a rural area too and the only other internet service avaliable is ONE HUNDRED and FIFTY dollars a month I can't afford that! so I'm stuck with AT&T's dial up service because its fifteen dollars a month and comes included on our phone bill. Which is why I spend the majority of my days even after class lets out on campus because they have high speed internet it takes like two seconds to load a website. You know I actually had someone ask me if they still "make" dial up internet the only downside is with dial up sometimes it freezes when I get on the forum because of the large photos and I can't download anything because it would take all day. So I have to use my friends high speed if I want to download something and I have an accelerator but it still takes forever to refresh a picture to save it and the bigger the picture the longer it takes to load it and then to refresh it and forget about watching video's like on youtube. I have to spend an hour letting even the shortest video load and then I have to replay it to watch it.

I feel your pain. Especially about YouTube. I have to download them otherwise my computer freezes. My only options as of now are through DirecTV satellite, and last time I checked it was in hundreds of dollars as well - not even including the installation of another dish, etc. Or I could wait until some rich person pays to have a cable put in, lol. Or Verizon can finally put a tower out here, and I could get it through the cell. I use Earthlink right now, and althought it has it's flaws - it does have an accelerator, which helps a lot.

1998-2001: Dual ISDN line with a speed of 128.000bps (expensive! bills for about 400 USD a month were regular)

2001: Cable, here I come... 10Mbit/s what a difference

2001-2009: Cable, speed increased to 25Mbit/s but unfortunately still not unlimited: 100Gb per month for about 70 EUR/month (100 USD)

My dad was considering going to Direct TV but we can't find a price for their internet service, and with him retiring in a few months I don't think we are going to be able to afford the cable box we have either so it'll be back to basic cable for us, and I hope we keep the internet. Which I'll have to have for classes in college so I have to keep the internet. I may have to give up other stuff but I'll keep internet. My aunt has earthlink and hers is even slower than AT&T. Our only options are Verizon/Comcast whatever name they go by now, they've changed it from Adelphia to Comcast to Verizon I think and like I said its one fifty a month for internet and Direct TV is just as much. We can't afford either options at this point.

Almost same to me. But internet develop is slower here.

we're almost the same with China. though i think we're a tad behind only recently they introduced 2mbps and 4 mbps (for office usage) lines. and for my service provider, there is no cap. i think i'd die if there was.

I hate that my internet didn't get any faster in almost 10 freaking years. 4mbps is only available in very few areas in Beijing, although they promised to make 8mbps popular before Olympics 2008. Still I prefer a 2mbps no cap connection to a 20mbps 100GB cap connection. I would definitely pay huge bills if I use capped connection.

Now I´m using 8mb connection.

I can upgrade to a 12 mb connection but not worth the money.

 

They are installing a 50mb connection through broadband but my street isn´t on the schedule yet

Can't you guys use your cell phone provider 3G network to go online, like Sprint has EVDO and ATT has another. It's still many times faster than dialup.

Im using Vodafone broadband modem, its fast enough, but depends , somedays then not so good

I use the sprint connection and its always super fast and the good thing is i can take it everywhere and it works the same. I have taken it all over the US and never had a problem, even puerto rico..

Grrr....I hate Dial-up. For a 4 minute video, it takes it like an hour to load. This makes me sooo mad when I want to see something off the bat. And big pictures don't load right sometimes either. It takes it so long to go ot a website. It takes my computer at least 5 to 10 minutes to get to this forum. But I just do other stuff while I'm waiting because it takes so long. The other day, I wanted to watch the Michael Jackson You Are Not Alone video and it was 5:57 and it took it 2 hours and 8 mins to load. That is way tooo long for a video. Hopefully we wiill get off of this slow internet connection soon.

the only thing that freezes on the forum on my internet is the really big photo's before they are reduced and you have to click to get the full size, while its loading the reduced size it freezes on me. it takes about a half hour to an hour to load a video if its a short music video but if its longer than like ten minutes it takes longer to load. Some other websites take a long time to load, like my universities website, wikipedia takes a minute or two to load, if the site has a lot of flash stuff or big photos it takes awhile to load.

I think we'll go to 50 to 100mpbs speed when all fibreoptic cables are in place... It can take a couple of years though. But I wished that they got rid of the limits... Regular internet is about 10mbps and 30Gb traffic. I have the best option available in Belgium. We have a few providers with unlimited traffic but those are DSL providers and I like cable instead of DSL. Faster, much more stable, more possible to the future...

 

 

Btw: How's the internet in China? Is it limited (cencored?) or is it completely free?

I´ve been reading a lot about the internet in China.

Last weekend they had an whole opening in the newspaper about the internet in China.

They said that the government were planing to install some stuff in the computer to monitor that internet traffic but now the China government is delaying that.

 

And today I saw something about the China government closing some internet sites, like Youtube (done that before), Facebook and other site.. if I remember correctly

Forgot something: my laptop connection "on the road":

 

2007-2009: Cellular 3G connection @ 3,6mbps: 2Gb per month, 42 EUR

2009-xxxx: Cellular HSPDA connection @ 7,2mbps: 5Gb per month, still 42 EUR

 

Unfortunately only in Belgium, outside Belgium it would cost huge amounts of money (had bills on the company for multiple hundreds of EUR for only a couple of megabytes of use...) Would love to see affordable roaming plans.
