I guess they were trying to differentiate between the tracks from the live album. They obviously aren't fooling us but it gives the songs a little more power and something extra. I've been a huge fan of Reba's for 14 years (seriously, she was my favorite before Celine, I was obsessed), seen her sing live 4 times and I've heard parts where she goes too flat or too sharp and I've never heard anything about her using auto-tune. Also Jupiter (Jupiter Studios, FL where she track sometimes) uses it during post tracking (mix>master) processing. AutoTune is a great product that may be used either in post OR in live settings. In Celine's case, she uses it live in Chromatic/soft "mode" (okay engineers, I'm speaking in lay terms here, so cut me some slack, lol). HOW AUTOTUNE "WORKS" (in VERY simple terminology, lol): Basically, the software "listens" to each note Celine sings, and, in lightning quick timing, using the musical chromatic scale, provides corrections to her pitch as needed while not changing (introducing artifacts, etc) her vocal signature. There are many settings that make this product almost "invisible" (indiscernible) to the listener. Celine only uses it during live vocal events to catch the occasional off pitch note. A Note: For a pro like Celine, using AutoTune should NOT be taken as a vocal "fault" or "fake". Using AutoTune isn't any more "fake" than using a click track (metronome) is for studio and stage musicians. It's only there to catch the occasional "oops" that comes with distraction, physical discomfort, incorrect monitoring or house bounce (sorry FOH and Stage Guys, lol), etc. Celine deserves every compliment and accolade. What about someone like Celine who changes her songs a lot and does vocal runs/melisma's? The software couldn't know what note she was going for so how could it correct it? Someone with the technical know-how please explain! No you just set a vocal correction setting towards a certain note and it will always push wrong notes to the desired outcome. It explains why she sounds this good in Vegas and can sound bad in standard live performances.I suspect she used it in Recovering at Stand Up To Cancer too as there is this special autotune sound, unlike at Ellen's.Most of the time, it's fine I guess, except that it takes off a lot that live sound that I appreciate so much.
