PatrickDion22 Posted June 29, 2009 at 05:56 PM Posted June 29, 2009 at 05:56 PM Hey everyone! I wanted to see people's thoughts about this new study that was released in Canada. The study basically states that most Canadians can identify entertainment icons like Celine (88% of the population), athelete and cancer activist Terry Fox (89%), and Las Vegas legend Wayne Gretzky (77%). Canadians as a whole however, couldn't identify key political and important figures in their nation's history. The inventor of insulin, Sir Frederick Banting, only got 8% of the nation's population who could identify him in a photo and only 41% of Canadians could identify Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. I would appreciate it if anyone had any thoughts on the study, especially Canadian citizens. I'm from the United States, but I love Canada and it's culture, (hence Celine). Here is the link to the study: http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTV...=TorontoNewHome Quote Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/patjsully

He's considered by many as one of the greatest ever in hockey history. He's always been called "The Great One". Apparently you're not a hockey fan. As for Céline, it doesn't surprise me at all that she's recognized by 88% of the population. Edited June 29, 2009 at 06:20 PM by Lou555 Quote

SensationalCeline Posted June 29, 2009 at 06:25 PM Posted June 29, 2009 at 06:25 PM Haha, I think that is amazing! that 88% can identify her. That is an "of course" reply but still. Is this including French and English Canada? Quote http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg280/spoiledrottenbrat4063/Celine%20Dion/CELINESIGGY.jpg
VintageCeline Posted June 29, 2009 at 09:40 PM Posted June 29, 2009 at 09:40 PM Sazzlepop and I are always saying how, if we use a picture of Celine, how many people here in the UK would know who she was? I highly doubt where we come from, that anyone would recognise her from a recent photograph! Cool thread though! sazzlepop123 Posted June 29, 2009 at 09:46 PM Posted June 29, 2009 at 09:46 PM Interesting you say that! Today I was posting a package to my friend and I stuck a big picture of Celine on the back with a speech bubble and funny message (It was a picture of Celine on stage in the mini pink dress from the tour) The lady laughed and said how it was lovely. I was like yehh I love her! Then after a moment I said, wait, do you know who that is?! and she says ''ummmmm'' looks at it for a while, then the lady next to her looks to and they both go ummmmm......then the new lady said ''Is that Celine Dion???'' And I said YEP! She's amazing and they both said.. ''aw yes she IS GOOD!'' I was like YES YES SHE IS.So, one lady out of two recognised her from a recent photo Quote http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c70/sarahlucy86/Celineandme12.jpg
Acacia Posted June 29, 2009 at 11:25 PM Posted June 29, 2009 at 11:25 PM I'm not surprised. In my opinion, Celine has a very unique look. Course, I guess it depends on which picture they used. I think the reason people don't recognize political figures, especially past, is because you don't see their face on a regular basis like you do with celebrities. Plus, their personality doesn't come out as much as celebrities. You would learn who the first Prime Minister is through school and then later in life when you see his picture you'd probably question which political figure he is. With Gretzky, I'm sure when he played for Edmonton his face and name was on TV and the newspaper after every game. With Celine, well she's everywhere! canadachick Posted June 30, 2009 at 03:07 AM Posted June 30, 2009 at 03:07 AM I'd HOPE they'd recognize her! I thought it was funny this weekend because my boyfriend's great aunt was visiting from Canada and she was saying there were a lot of famous Canadians. She asked if I'd ever heard of Céline Dion and I said, uh yeah... I completely LOVE her!!! Apparently the Canadians think we don't know one of their greatest gifts ever! It was cute and we had a looooong discussion. When Céline comes back I'm taking her to a concert because her husband won't take her. I can't wait! Ok, in reality, if Céline has another baby and is enjoying her time off, I cant wait. But I'll be happy if she decides to come back! The funny thing is that whenever we travel anywhere in the world and they learn we come from Québec, they always say : "You must know Céline Dion then?". But my 3 year-old niece can identify her. Show her a picture of Celine and asked her "Mika, who's this?" in which she'll respond with "It's Celine!" In fact, not only can she recognize Celine by her face, but also by her voice. When Celine comes on the radio, she'll be like "It's Celine!" It's cute. I am the only actual Celine fanatic at school, but I don't care, and when I blurt out random facts about her they're like, you know more about her than she does! Quote
