MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), pronounced /ˈmɪdi/, is an industry-standard protocol defined in 1982[1] that enables electronic musical instruments such as keyboard controllers, computers, and other electronic equipment to communicate, control, and synchronize with each other; everyone can play midifiles on their computer, however they sound very crappy with a normal soundcard, But if you have a keyboard or instruments on your computer you can address each channel to a different instrument which sounds sometimes amazingly lifelike!

and when you make your own music, by recording via midi, every note you play, every keyboardvelocity, transposing of notes, pitch bending, everything is written in midi to your computer. Midifiles are very smalll in filesize because they basicly give codes to your computer what to do - go to that instrument, play that note, that tempo, etc etc.
