It's been 97 years since Titanic hit the iceberg that cold night on April 14th, 1912 (at 11:40PM), and will soon be 97 years since it has sunk...(2:20AM on the 15th)...

 

Hard to believe it's been almost 100 years. Only one survivor is left.

I would have stayed up to watch it on the time but I had school and I was studying for tests so that sucks. I hope those that died will continue to rest in peace. I love this movie. NO matter how many times I watch it, i wanna watch it all over again. I could watch it all day if i had to.

On 15 April 2012, the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic is planned to be commemorated around the world. By that date, the Titanic Quarter in Belfast is planned to have been completed. The area will be regenerated and a signature memorial project unveiled to celebrate Titanic and her links with Belfast, the city that had built the ship.

 

The Balmoral, operated by Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has been chartered by Miles Morgan Travel to follow the original route of the Titanic, intending to stop over the point on the sea bed where she rests on 15 April 2012.

I still find the film extremely sad. Although most of it is based of the love developement of characters, it still is sad to think how many people actually died.

 

I have seen Titanic about 50 million times, but I would probably say it is one of my favourite films of all time...

I would watch the movie but I've seen it way way way to many times and I'm tired of it and don't feel like watching it for like a year now. It's on tv waaaay to much. I had no idea it was the anniversary of the sinking, how tragic. I went to the Titanic exhibit they had at the Cosi museum in Ohio and it was amazing, they had a replica of the grand staircase and it looked exactly like the one from the movie! I didn't want to leave the staircase I just stood there looking at it for ages. They even had dishes and chairs and things from the ship and a at the end a giant "ice burg" basically a big chunk of ice you could touch. Also when you enter the exhibit you got a card with information about a passenger on Titanic and it told their name, where they were from, if they traveled with anyone such as a spouse or children, what class they were on the ship and at the end of the exhibit on the wall was a list of every passenger aboard and you found your passengers name and found out if they lived or died.

COSI bringing Titanic Exhibition

to Columbus, Ohio

 

ATLANTA, GEORGIA—January 3, 2005 – Premier Exhibitions, Inc. (OTC BB: PXHB)

today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary RMS Titanic, Inc. in association with

COSI a Columbus Science Museum will host a collection of Titanic recovered artifacts from

March 12 until Sept. 5, 2005.

 

"Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition," features hundreds of important artifacts recovered from

the wrecked liner. The exhibit covers 15,000 square feet and includes a fully preserved 16-

foot davit (launching crane) used to lower lifeboats. It also features a replica of the liner's

grand staircase and recreated first- and third-class rooms.

“We have been looking forward to bringing this Blockbuster exhibition to Columbus for a

very long time and we now look forward to working with the fine team of professionals at

COSI”, said Arnie Geller, President and CEO of Premier Exhibitions, Inc.

The exhibition will include items that trace back to Ohio, including bank notes printed at a

Columbus bank.

 

The artifacts bring personal connection history as well as a sense of the engineering and

science behind the massive liner, said Kathryn D. Sullivan, President and CEO of COSI.

The exhibit should provide a much-needed box office boost to COSI, Sullivan said.

Nondisclosure agreements prevent her from discussing how much the museum paid to bring

the exhibit, but she said it's expected to make "good business sense" for the museum.

"We hope it will have a great impact," Sullivan said.

 

"Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition" should also be a tourism windfall to the city of Columbus,

said Paul Astleford, president and chief executive officer of Experience Columbus.

"Exhibitions and attractions like 'Titanic' will continue to bring people from all over the state

and region to Columbus and will ultimately support more local jobs and contribute to local

and state taxes," Astleford said in a press release.

 

The exhibition is a production of RMS Titanic, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlantabased

Premier Exhibitions, Inc. RMS Titanic, Inc. obtained salvage rights to the Titanic in

1994 and has toured the exhibition in cities throughout the world including Chicago, Los

Angeles, Paris and London.

 

The exhibition’s arrival in Columbus was due to "fortuitous timing," Sullivan said. Budget

cuts forced COSI to close its south wing in September, freeing up space for the exhibit.

Premier Exhibitions, Inc. is a major provider of museum quality touring exhibitions

throughout the world.

 

RMS Titanic, Inc. is the only company permitted by law to recover objects from the

wreck of the Titanic. The Company was granted salvor-in-possession rights to the

wreck of the Titanic by a United States federal court in 1994 and has conducted seven

research and recovery expeditions to the Titanic wreck site and recovered

approximately 5500 artifacts.

Rebuild it.

 

Initially there were plans to rebuild the Titanic but those plans have disappeared... I thought the original plan was to make the maiden voyage in 2012.

 

This won't happen though...

 

I was always very interested in the Titanic and her history, I've dozens of books, documentaries, etc... about this very famous ship. I would love to see the Titanic rise again but we can be certain this won't happen soon (or even late). The economic climate isn't right at this moment and besides that it doesn't seams right to rebuild it...

 

But even if they ever try to rebuild the Titanic it never would be an exact copy of the orginal Titanic. Building a ship like Titanic is one thing, getting it certified is another thing... A copy on original specs would never get a seaworthiness certificate. Maybe for static display yes but not for actually cruising.

 

We all know the problems with the Titanic and there are several reasons why this ship sank in the first place. We have the materials which weren't right, we had the watertight dividers which weren't high enough, etc... For short: numerous design flaws... While this could be changed it will make that the ship won't be an identical copy. We have the engines... Regular steamengines like she had aren't made anymore and for sure they aren't from this time anymore. While it's possible rebuilding the original steamengines could cost massive amounts of money... Not to speak about the certification process which would take also time and money... Ofcourse it's possible to use general marine diesel engines or gas turbines... But it won't be the same anymore... Although you always can set smokegenerators in the chimnies.

 

Let's talk about the interior... The 3 classes could obiously not be used anymore those days... I doubt that anyone would be willing to spend time in a 3th class hut like original specified in 1912... Die hard fans maybe but in the end regular customers would decline such an offer... Let's not forget about the original layout. Again, rules are different nowadays, I doubt that the original layout of the ship would be certified... Safety is a big issue these days. Not to forget about used materials, some materials can't be used due firesafety regulations... And this list can continue forever...

 

I doubt that "Titanic" would ever be reborn... As a floating hotel or a static real life scale maybe but as an actual cruiseship? Not now, not tommorow, never... Unless it will be completely redrawn to comply at current regulations and at that point it won't be Titanic anymore but a cruiseship with some similarities and the same name...
