Europe Travel

I know this is kind of random, but I think this would be the best place to post this since there are so many European fans here.

I will be going on a summer study programme in Stuttgart, Germany in May, and intend to tour around for a bit. I will have Fridays and weekends free, so my friends and I decided to travel to different cities within Germany.

We intend to go to Paris and Vienna over two weekends as well.

After the program, we intend to travel to Berne in Switzerland for about 4 days before moving down to Rome, Venice and Milan in Italy.

I've been reading up so much about European travel, but the different passes for Eurail and so on are confusing me. My friends have also told me that Germany has its own internal train network, which extends into Austria, meaning I don't need to take Eurail.

Could anyone help me out on this? What would be the best or cheapest way for a student to travel around?
