I found an old article from the Montreal Gazette, from June 2000, which actually states Céline had fourteen embryo's. Three were used for RC, so that means she still has eleven. That means the chance of her getting pregnant is actually bigger than we thought, she can try four times!

It could be twins for Dion

There is about a one-in-three chance pop diva Celine Dion could be the mother of twins next year, according to the internationally renowned fertility specialist who treated her.

"For her age group, you have a 30- to 40-per-cent chance of having multiples if you put three embryos in," said Dr. Zev Rosenwaks yesterday in an interview from his Manhattan office.

He explained that 14 of 16 eggs removed from 32-year-old Dion were fertilized and "because of the risk of high-order multiple pregnancies, no more than three" embryos were transferred into the singer's uterus.

"She's not going to have quintuplets or quadruplets, I can assure you of that," said Rosenwaks, director of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility in New York City.

He added that the chances Dion will have triplets is "very low." She is expected to deliver in February or early March. A recent Canadian study found that two-thirds of pregnancies that resulted from the implantation of two or three embryos produced one child, according to fertility specialist Dr. Norman Barwin, president of the Ottawa-based Infertility Awareness Association of Canada. "Most multiple pregnancies were twins," he said. However, Barwin explained, as the potential number of offspring increases, so do the risks.

"One of the consequences of multiple pregnancy is premature labour, which leads to premature babies, and increased difficulties in terms of the babies' survival and long-term development," he said. "The prognosis for twins is far better than for triplets and much, much better than for quintuplets."

In February, Dion launched a $20-million (U.S.) lawsuit against the National Enquirer after the tabloid claimed she was pregnant with twins following artificial insemination.

The cover story of the June 26 edition of People magazine looks at "Celine's pregnancy" and says that Dion had eggs removed from her body on May 25, which were then fertilized and transferred to her uterus three days later.

People's behind-the-scenes take on the international superstar mother-to-be follows Dion's own announcement last Friday telling the world she is pregnant.

"In three weeks, if all goes well, we'll hear the heart of our baby beating inside my tummy," she said in a statement from Jupiter, Fla., where she lives with her husband and manager, Rene Angelil, 58, who has been married twice before and has three children.

The couple reportedly had Angelil's sperm frozen so they could try an assisted reproductive technique like in-vitro fertilization.

Rosenwaks said Dion received ICSI - intra cytoplasmic sperm injection - in which a single sperm is introduced directly into the egg. "Then embryos were put back into the uterus and, fortunately, she did become pregnant," said Rosenwaks.

"So far, the results are encouraging. In about two weeks, she will have an ultrasound to determine whether it's a good pregnancy with a fetal heartbeat, as we do for all our patients who undergo ovulation induction and in-vitro fertilization."

He said his clinic usually remains in contact with a patient for up to seven weeks, when the pregnant woman receives an ultrasound, which is also used to determine whether there is a multiple pregnancy.

Rosenwaks expects Dion will undergo that examination in Florida or Montreal, where she also has a home. Dion's gynecologist, Ronald Ackerman, is based in Florida.

Dion's fertility treatments, which prevented her from singing a tribute at the recent funeral of hockey legend Maurice Richard, were done at Rosenwaks's New York clinic.

Rosenwaks said that IVF treatment could cost between $9,000 and $15,000 U.S., "depending on the clinic and how many procedures and different things you need to have done."
