endy Posted February 23, 2009 at 07:17 AM Posted February 23, 2009 at 07:17 AM aren't they all a bit Chinese? even I have a Chinese ancestor, my grandmother from the Dutch-Indies had a Chinese grandmother! Yes and no, depend on the region/country. It's true that the nowadays South East Asian people have a little mixture of Chinese DNA. For example, there are some Chinese-looking people from Philipines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, etc. But they proudly call themselves Filipinos, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. They no longer have any ties with the Chinese people or culture. In fact they have their own culture. The only thing that connect the Chinese-looking people with the real Chinese is probably their religion Buddhism. The people in South East Asia are also dominated by the Malay gene. Malay and Chinese look completely different. Maybe like Caucasian vs Hispanic. In non Islamic country such as Philipines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, the blending between the Chinese genes and Malay genes is almost perfect. That's why, if a South East Asian person stand before u, u wont be able to tell from what South East Asian country he\she is. Coz they all look alike. Some have Chinese features, some have Malay features, and others look neither Chinese nor Malay. BUT... when u talk about Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia (where Islam dominates), there's no blend between the Malay and Chinese! Indeed, some do interracial marriage but is very uncommon and frowned by both the native Malay and Chinese. Mainly because the Moslem don't permit marriage of different religions (most Chinese in South East Asia are either Christian or Buddhist). Second, there's a long history of discrimination and hatred since the colonial time which still exists even now. For example: Indonesia. The Dutch used divide-conquer technique among the native Malay and Chinese by putting the Chinese in slightly higher position above the native Malay Indonesian. This caused a great jealousy and hatred. The hatred continued until the reign of ex president Soeharto who outlawed all Chinese-related things such as language and writings! In this era, any Chinese/Japanese/Korean TV series aired in Indonesia musn't contain any Oriental writings a.k.a. censored (they feared Communist China slipped communist messages via those writing). Chinese Malaysian also reported the same discrimination as the political party that rules Malaysia doesn't favor the Chinese and other races. Although in my opinion, Chinese Malaysian have a bit better life compared to Chinese Indonesian. Therefore, the Chinese-looking people in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei still call themselves Chinese and still follow Chinese tradition such as Lunar New Year and Lion/Dragon Dance. Indeed, many have been domesticated (such as not being able to speak Mandarin) but they still proudly call themselves Chinese. I hope this can give you all insight about this Chinese Asian thing Just for additional info, Asia is HUGE. The people of India are also Asian. And the Arab are also Asian! endy Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:48 AM Posted February 23, 2009 at 08:48 AM thanks for this explanation, but it was only a joke All i know is that the grandmother of my grandmother from the dutch-indies was chinese, but that marriage was made in the 19th century I think It's possible. Some Dutch men during colonial time favored native Indonesian women. So, if they could like native Indonesian, some must have liked Chinese as well. Speaking of Chinese, my mom has a Chinese karaoke VCD. Not Mandarin though (China has many dialects - same writing but different pronounciation). And there's a woman who sings Celine's song! The Power of Love and To Love You More. The music is very identical and so is the singing style. Yes, the Chinese woman can also "stretch her cord" as well as Celine. I have no idea whether the songs have permission or not. But interestingly, some Chinese like to "Chinafy" well known songs, coz I've heard some Indonesian songs being Chinafied for karaoke purpose. Again, I have no idea whether the karaoke maker has license/permission or not. Probably not though... coz recently some Indonesian are angered coz they find Indonesian classic song - Bengawan Solo - being Chinafied and used for a Chinese movie soundtrack - Color Blossoms. They are also mad coz the movie tends to sell sex although is not a porn movie. Quote http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb31/endy1980/SSbanner/signature-2.jpg
