Celine Biggest Worldwide Concert Draw of 2008?

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Madonna and Celine Dion were the biggest worldwide concert draws in 2008, each selling more than $200 million worth of tickets to their slickly produced shows, trade publication Pollstar said on Tuesday.

 

The pop singers also took the top two spots in North America, which accounts for an estimated 40 percent of the concert business, Pollstar said.

 

Madonna's "Sticky & Sweet" world tour, which finished in Brazil last week, tallied $281.6 million from 17 countries. North American fans ponied up $105.3 million.

 

French-Canadian balladeer Dion, launching her first world tour in more than eight years, earned $236.6 million from 24 countries, with North America contributing $94 million.

 

This year marks the first time that Pollstar has compiled foreign data. Among the all-time North American tours, Madonna's ranks at No. 8 and Dion's at No. 12. The Rolling Stones hold the record with $162 million from their 2005 trek.

 

Dion, 40, might well be the hardest working woman in show business, having made Pollstar's list of top 10 acts every year since 2003. That year she began a 700-plus show residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and grossed more than $385 million by the time it wrapped last December.

 

Celine's average per concert in North America is 2 million dolars so she will reach more 50 million dolars with the 25 concerts next year.

 

That means her tour will probably gross around 286,6 million dolars. Only more 5 million than the tour of Madonna.

 

They will end very close.

that is awesome news!! So glad Celine wil lcome out top!! although its not a true representive of the concerts!! Celine tour is much bigger than madonnas..but madonna charged like £365 compared to celines £125 and she also sang in much bigger venues!! However everyone that i no that went to madonna's concert said it was awful..she kept fans waiting for ages...the sound was even worse and alot of the concert was standing no allocaion of seats so yu could pay 365 and end up at the back of the stadium!!! But as we can see the best lady won in the end!! OUr Celine!! xx

True, but then you could do the same thing with albums (like for example Céline is the best selling female artist, coz she sold the most albums, but look at how many albums she released (over 20)... if you look at Shania, she has sold about 75 million, with only 3 studio albums (+1 GH)). There are so many categories in which you can put everything... let's just look at everything as a whole..

yeah we know shania is the best selling female with 1 album but that was in the peak of the business and now she could never do that. plus the best selling céline albums are only 3 too: FIY, LTAL and ATW

Yes, Céline did more shows, but most were in smaller venues than Madonna. Céline worked her #ss off to go to many cities/countrires and perform an average of 3 shows a week, and sometimes 4!! Madonna just goes for stadiums and performs a lot less shows. So Céline is definately the hardest working female in the biz!!

this is quite an old article. S&S Tour ended almost a month ago (the article stated it ended just last week). and i wouldn't be surprised if M adds more shows to maintain her record. we all know Madonna since the beginning. she'll do anything and everything to stay on top.

Yeah good point. I think Celine proved that she "could" have filled out stadiums in most countries she visited if she wanted to but instead for whatever reason they went for arenas instead. Most probably because Celine made it quite clear prior to starting the tour that she wanted to actually see some of the countries she was visiting as opposed to flying in, performing and then flying out again. In Paris I've no doubt Celine could've filled the Stade De France again instead of filling Bercy for 6 nights for example. In London she brought 40,000 into the o2 arena over 2 nights when she could've played at a football stadium for one night. She did indeed fill a stadium in Ireland. It's all relative of course but I personally think it's amazing that the world has 2 female pop stars over the age of 40 that can bring in over $200m dollars each in touring. That's incredible!!

 

Celine though is used to being on this list and has been since 2003. What a woman.

And I guarantee you Madonna will announce BEFORE the end of February the extension of her tour, so the Industry won't be able to say "Taking Chances World Tour" was highest grossing, because technically the sticky and sweet tour by Madonna will not be complete until the summer.

 

Celine should do the same thing....take the winter off and play Montreal again this summer (god knows they flock to her in friggin droves) plus add more concerts!!! Maybe some maritime dates??? some more europe dates?

You know we could hash this out until eternity, but one thing ever one must remember is that Celine has been selling out concert for the good part of her 28 years of her career!

 

Many people go to Madonnas concerts for her lewdness (questionable lyrics, actions, etc.). No matter how you say it, all of Celines career has been based on HER TALENT and not lewdness. Celine is NOT in the tabloids like a lot of artists.

 

Celine is pure in Heart and Spirit and her love for her family and us, her fans is genuine!! How many concert goers of Madonnas can say that she will stop wherever she may be just to sign autographs for her fans; Celine will.

 

As far as Renès age goes, go and count how many celebrities are married to partners who are even more than 26 years older than their spouse and Celine and Rene have a true love for each other that most would be jealous of.

 

So, let us stop the comparison and rest in the fact that no matter who you compare Celine to, that there is only 1 Celine and we are proud to love her and call ourselves her fans.

Apparently Madonna wasn't involving the audience much on her tour, and we all know how great Celines shows have been.

the only reason i would go to a madonna concert would be if i wanted to see her gyrating around the stage with dancers half her age wearing very little and not really singing much at all

THE success of Madonna's 2008 "Sticky & Sweet" tour - she reportedly earned $280 million in ticket sales - may not have hit its final note. Madge (above) wrapped up her world tour last week, but a source told us, "She will be back in London this summer performing a few more shows." We know one person who won't be in the crowd - Guy Ritchie. Madonna's ex-husband is living in the London home they once shared, while she held on to their Manhattan place. Her rep did not return e-mails.

Celine should continue her tour to countries she has not visited yet like the Philippines. I'm sure that a lot of Filipinos will buy tickets to witness her concert.
