Learning to love Celine

 

There is no record of any audience left unsatisfied by the Dion live experience

To those for whom Celine Dion represents all the worst qualities of factory-made art -- and for whom her processed-cheese quality combines with her ubiquity to make her truly intolerable -- her Tuesday elevation to the elite ranks of Companions of the Order of Canada will be nothing more than a fresh occasion for wrath. It is hard to find any articulate defence at all of Ms. Dion's music-- but then, perhaps it needs no defence. She has sold more than 200 million records. This suggests she means a great deal to those place, or recorded hitting a duff note. History offers no record of any audience left unsatisfied by the Celine Dion live experience; on her latest tour, even the fiercest critics have often come away impressed.

 

So many artists make the decision, well before they reach her age (and she is only 40), that they need to derail successful careers in order to express some "other side" of themselves. Others, of course, are just plain consumed by personal demons: It's hard to believe, looking back from 2008, that Ms. Dion was once considered (literally) a pale imitation of Whitney Houston. Celine Dion has never taken the view that her fans exist to serve her emotional needs, as opposed to the other way around. Say what you like about all the costume changes, the programmed stage banter and the homogenized song interpretations, but it's rare for a star of Dion's interplanetary stature to remain so focused on audience expectations.

 

And as the project called Canada continues to struggle along under its burden of bilingualism, what better role model could we have than Celine Dion, who continues to intersperse her English-language output with (what we are told tend to be slightly more exciting and sincere) francophone albums? She has, with terrifyingly inerrant commercial instincts, conquered both of the larger cultural realms in which our overmodest dominion keeps one foot. Quebecers seem much less likely than anglo-Canadians to view her through the lens of irony; they are conscious that she is a little piece of Quebec obtruding into the life of the world, much as every Nokia phone is a tiny chunk of Finnish soil. Maybe they're on to something ...

 

for whom her vocal art represents precisely those things in life which elude proper articulation. And they are legion.

 

Maybe it's time Canada learned to love the much-caricatured Quebecois girl who is perhaps our most commercially successful artist, in any field, ever. After all, isn't there something to be said for professionalism? It has been about 20 years since Ms. Dion, with the killer instinct of a jungle creature, snapped off a ringer's victory (on behalf of Switzerland) in the Eurovision Song Contest and quickly transitioned to anglophone recordings and trans-American stardom. She has remained consistently mega-popular ever since, watching rival after rival melt away under the hot lights of press attention.

 

Despite a punishing concert schedule and a long Vegas residency, she is rarely photographed with a single hair out of.....
