I'm going through a bit of a rough time...

Hey guys, I wasn't sure whether to post this but I'm gonna go ahead and do it.

Basically, I'm due to go to university in September and I know that I should be really excited about it, but to be honest whenever I think about it I get an overwhelming feeling of anxiety and panic.

My fears are that I'm not going to fit in with anybody there, as I hate going out clubbing etc. and keep imagining myself there all alone whilst everyone else is out having a great time.

Is there anybody else on here that feels/felt this way? Any feedback would be nice as I'm starting to wonder whether I'm actually normal or not.

Thanks guys.

Hey there.

You're not alone, everyone has some fear when going off to university. It's perfectly natural and normal!

My advice to you, stay true to you. Believe me when I say that there are other people that you will fit along perfectly with---I was the same way. I hated the club scene, and I was fortunate enough to find friends that fit me.

It will be scary, but me calm, confident, and true to yourself. People will notice you for you and you'll have friends before you know it. It's also a matter of GETTING OUT THERE and not just hiding in your room. Easier said than done, but I'm sure you'll be just fine!

Just like high school, not everyone at university likes to go clubbing or are party animals. It is up to you to find and hang out with the right people. And don't forget, you're not the only one who's stressed. It is normal to be stressed on your first day. Some people even take weeks before adapting themselves to their new environment. Just be yourself, be nice and have a smile and people will come and talk to you.

Thanks for your comments, I know I'm blowing it all out of proportion, I just can't help but feel over anxious sometimes! :flowers:

 Not everyone at university goes out clubbing etc. There are those that don't even drink alcohol like me, so when I get there i'll be there with the rest of the sober people. :D

There is so much to do on most university campuses. I hope you didn't get inspired by watching those stupid blockbuster movies on "college life." :bye1: Because that's not real life.

I recommend that if you want to keep yourself busy and make new friends - the best places to do so are through various student clubs and cultural groups. Also, you can get involved in volunteer work for arts, cultural, and educational programs at the university. Normally, people who are involved in these activities are responsible, caring and good people.

Amy!!

I am leaving my Uni to go to another university in september, and I feel the same.

I am nervous too, I keep thinking "Have I chose the right course, Will I meet new friends..." I think all students feel the same, but it will be alright.

And you will most probably meet people who don't like clubbing ect either, I think you'll be fine :)

Hey!

Just out of interest, which univ are you going to? Some have campuses; others don't. I can't say what it's like to live on a univ campus, because my univ (Portsmouth) was spread out over a wide area. I can imagine campuses being a completely different experience to what I went through.

There is the widest range of people at univ, so you're going to - without doubt - meet people with the same interests as you.

The all-night every night partying only lasts for a year at most! By the end of the first year, people have spent all their money on clubbing, and don't have the time to go out as much, so you're probably best saving your cash!

Going to College allows you to become the real you , you grow up alot in college, obviously life experience makes us grow, and college is yet another life experience for you. You dont have to go clubbing all the time, I didnt, you can do what you want. Join clubs, sports, whatever, or you dont have to, you can chill alone if you wish.

Its totally normal to be apprehensive, so give yourself a break. you will be fine, you will see. And u will always find a friend. Others will be feeling the very same as you . Good luck, dont worry bout it.....:)

I was never into clubbing ethier, so at first it was difficult to me to find friends. My advice is to join an organization that interests you. Then you'll meet other people with the same interests, and it's easy from there! I was part of the campus activities board on campus who planned all the events and things for students to attend. I highly suggest it if your school has something like that. It's so much fun to get involved with and you meet a lot of people and get a lot of experience with event planning. College is seriously the best time of your life (For most people), but it's totally normal to be nervous. Actually, I graduated in May, and I'm already thinking about going back! :) Best of luck.

It is a scary notion - heading off to a university. But just take it all in - and make the most of the experience. Honestly - you will develop frienships before you know it - but try to soak in that small amount of time where everything is new...and uncertain. You will grow from that - and look back at it fondly.

But - I agree with others - be true to your interests. Let people fit in with you - don't fit in with people.
