the songs is nothing special...just a ballad in a style of Celine's SONG FOR YOU

uhmm i think it's better than the ever boring ASFY musically, but where's the "classic" Whitney i was promised? there's no trace of voice recovery on that song. the song sounds just like some mediocre ballads on Just Whitney...

Beautiful ballad, her voice isn't as good as old-school Whitney but I am really impressed with the vocals. Good job Whitney!

ASFY is not boring it's pure Love, is a simple and amazing poem with a classic musically.

The whitney song is boring, but to me sounds like bad copy of ASFTY

Never mind. I got it.

"I Didn't Know My Own Strength"

VERSE 1:

(Mmmmmm Yeah)

Lost touch with my soul

I had nowhere to turn

I had nowhere to go

Lost sight of my dream

Thought it would be the end of me, uh

I thought i'd never make it through

I had no hope to hold on to, I

I thought I would break

CHORUS:

I didn't know my own strength

and I crashed down and I tumbled

but I did not crumble

I got through all the pain

I didn't know my own strength

Survived my darkest hour

My faith kept me alive

I picked myself back up

hold my head up high

I was not built to break

I didn't know my strength, oh

VERSE 2:

Found hope in my heart

I found the light to life

My way out of the dark

Found all that I need

Here Inside of me

Oh, I thought i'd never find my way

I thought i'd never lift that weight

I thought I would break

CHORUS:

I didn't know my own strength

and I crashed down and I tumbled

but I did not crumble

I got through all the pain

I didn't know my own strength

Survived my darkest hour

My faith kept me alive

I picked myself back up

hold my head up high

I was not built to break

I didn't know my strength

BRIDGE:

There were so many times, I

Wondered how i'd get through the night, I

Thought I took all that I could take

CHORUS:

I didn't know my own strength

and I crashed down and I tumbled

but I did not crumble

I got through all the pain, oh oh

I didn't know my own strength

Survived my darkest hour

My faith kept me alive

I picked myself back up

I hold my head up high

I was not built to break

I didn't know my strength

(Mmmmmm)

I was not built to break, no no

I got to know my own strength

love the lyrics, very personal for her!

the song yeah, too much 90's

It's not even 90's... I can't explain it. I hope this is not the 1st single cause if it is then that's not good. Mariah did the same mistake in 2002, releasing a cheesy ballad trying to be her old self with Through The Rain. It didn't work in 2002 and it will work even less in 2009.

for MC's through the rain it was a powerful ballad though much more powerful than this song

and it doesn't sound like David produced it lol

I was rooting, and still am in sorts rooting for Whitney, because I like her voice, and I think it would be a really awesome story- down from the dumps, then back up! But her voice is shot. I like the song, but her voice isn't smooth, it sounds horse, like she had strep throat, unpurposefully raspy, even. I think her voice is still way better than say, Mariah Carey's, but it's far from where I hoped it would be, and I wasn't expecting 1994 Whitney, but I was.. idk I was expecting more. But I do like the song, and her "now" voice even fits it pretty good, but I'm not falling over impressed like I hoped I'd be. I think I'd be more impressed if she was a just starting out artist, cause I guess there wouldn't be much to compare it to, or hope for it to be.

I don't want to be rude but.. gosh.. her voice really sounds horrendous and this new song is soooo boring and badly produced.

Her comeback is gonna be a huge failure. I can already sense it. -_-

i heard this version of WH song is demo, completly LIVE version

Last 15 years ? That makes 1994. Mariah didn't had any problems with her live performances until 1998 and then again from 2001 to 2005 her performances have been great.

Did you read what I wrote ? We're talking about nowadays. During their golden years everyone can chose who is better cause they were both amazing live and on their albums. However for the past few years both of them suck on live performances. What I said was that at least Mariah still sounds good on her records which as we can see is not the case with Whitney. It took them so many years to make that album and she came with these vocals... I don't think it's a great idea to say such things about Mariah's live performances when Whitney's aren't any better. Let's keep it real, Celine's the only one from the big 3 (Celine, Whitney, Mariah) that still can sing live without any problems.

mariah has problem with her live singing since 1996 IMO, i already noticed from her Daydream tour. Celine yeah, in the best live vocal shape , but we still did not hear Whitney, so lets wait and after judge. If Mariah could hold her live singing only 5-6 years, lets remember how many years Whitney was on stage who was singing ONLY live from 1985, nobody cant take it from her, its already in history. There was nothing wrong with Mariah's voice even during the Butterfly Tour, it has changed but it was great. It's like comparing Whitney's 80's vocals to let's say the concert in Brunei she did in 1996. Both are great but her vocal peak was during the 80's. Anyway, I like her a lot and I hope she'll have a great comeback. I react that way because I really care what she'll come up with after so many years.

Um Yes. I am allowed to have my opinion, and I think Mariah's voice on her albums sounds completely edited, and when she is singing live, it's sub-par for me. This sounds like Whitneys actual voice. Granted, I haven't heard all of Mariahs songs, and don't plan to, but I'v heard quite a few from the last few albums and they arn't up to standard for me, and I think Whitney NOW is better than Mariah NOW based on this song. Back when, they we're fairly matched. Mariah's vocal crap-out started around 1997, not 1994. My fav M performance was either 93 or 94- Anytime you need a friend, and it was awesome!

That's how it is for me, Period, and I'm not going to fight about something that is my unchanging opinion.

And Bobby K does look very cute. :D

It's great that Whitney finally releases a new album. I hope it's a new beginnig for her after a few bad years. She has one of the greatest voices and is an inspiration for many younger singers so she deserves to have her fame back.

The song is sort of cheesy, and reminds me of Try It On My Own. I'm not really impressed with her voice. With all the hype I was expecting more. I mean, she hasn't recorded in years and years, and this is what we get? She needs a cough drop. I'm still anxious to hear the rest, but the song that leaked a while ago Like I Never Left was much better.

Clive Davis: 'You Won't Forget' Whitney Houston's New Album

Legendary Music Producer Says Houston's New Songs Highlight Her Strength

By MICHELLE MAJOR

July 14, 2009

Whitney Houston is the most honored female artist of all time. She's the only artist ever to have seven consecutive multiplatinum albums, beating out even the Beatles. And now the man who has been with her from the start is talking about her comeback and sharing his memories of her extraordinary career.

Legendary music producer Clive Davis remembers Houston as that young girl who first gave us her remarkable sound, made famous in songs like "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You."

Just the name Whitney Houston brings to mind that voice: the musical range, the enormous range of emotion, and a kind of power that can make a perfect arrow out of just one note.

"The time that I first saw her singing in her mother's act in a club called Sweet Waters right here in Manhattan ... it was such a stunning impact," Davis told "Good Morning America" anchor Diane Sawyer. "To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine."

Houston made the same impact across the country when introduced for the first time on television, 25 years ago.

"I remember going on Merv Griffin's show and I remember introducing Whitney for the first time," Davis said. "Whitney came on and she sang the song 'Home' from 'The Wiz,' and that was our first public performance together."

Even with Houston's debut success and enormous talent, it took two years to release her first album.

"People say, 'what takes so long?'" Davis said. "You've got to make sure that no matter how outstanding an artist is ... If you don't have special material, if you don't have the right material, you're not going to make the impact that you want to make."

Houston's first single, "You Give Good Love" went to number one on the Billboard charts. Then came a string of number one hits -- seven in all -- breaking a record set by the Beatles.

"When you are breaking records like that you really have to pinch yourself," Davis said.

Houston's New Album

Houston was also the first artist to make a chart-topping hit out of the national anthem.

Her performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 was recorded and sold as a fundraising effort for Gulf War soldiers, and it hit number 20 on the Billboard charts.

"Certainly, 'The Star Spangled Banner' is one of those vivid memories of America, indeed everyone everywhere, of hearing our national anthem performed in that manner," Davis said. "It was a stunning memory."

But for Davis, the making of the film "The Bodyguard" remains perhaps his fondest memory.

"When the first rush of 'The Bodyguard' was sent to me, there was little, if any, music at all," he said. "I mean, her acting was decent. It was good, but it was not bravura.

"I wrote a letter to the director and I said you've got to go back, you've got to shoot again," he continued. "We'll come up with music, we'll come up with great songs to show who Whitney is and what she is and why she needs to be protected by a bodyguard. And the director at the time didn't get it. He fought it."

But co-star Kevin Costner shared Davis' vision -- the director was fired and they changed the film.

"Of course, the rest is history because the songs are such a part of the film," he said. "The album has become the best-selling soundtrack album of all time."

And now more than seven years since we last heard from Houston, she's releasing a new album in September, titled "I Look to You."

"What I want the public to most know is that there's always room for creative artistry, there's always room for a great all-time singer," he said. "An all-time singer singing great songs."

The man who discovered her says he wants to show that Houston "still stands for the best of song writing, the best of singing -- and we know the public wants it."

"You won't forget it after you hear it," Davis said, calling the album a labor of love for all involved. "There is a song on this album which is called 'I Didn't Know My Own Strength' and it really speaks for Whitney. She tumbled but she didn't crumble."

Houston will kick off "GMA's" Fall Concert Series in September. Stay tuned to "GMA" and abcnews.com/gma for more information, and CLICK HERE to visit Whitney Houston's official Web site.
