GoldenLeaf Posted November 8, 2008 at 03:34 AM Posted November 8, 2008 at 03:34 AM The talk queen reacts to Proposition 8. Ellen Degeneres and Portia de Rossi's marriage is over after two months. At least that's longer than the two weeks Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds lasted. But while Eddie's marriage collapsed under hasty decision making, showing just how lightly marriage is treated by some people who it's available to, Ellen's marriage got canned because Proposition 8 passed in California. The legislation, which was also supported in Arizona and Florida, prohibits same-sex marriage. Illegal same-sex marriages. Sigh, that takes me back. Before same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada, there was a lot of, "What's next? People marrying their dog?" As of press time, it was still illegal to marry your dog. On Thursday, Ellen posted congratulations for Barack Obama on her website, alongside her feelings about having her relationship trivialized. "I was saddened beyond belief," she wrote. "Here we just had a giant step toward equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away. I believe one day a 'ban on gay marriage' will sound totally ridiculous. In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us." Fellow power lez Melissa Etheridge posted her bewilderment on The Daily Beast. "I am taking [the results] to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen," she wrote. "I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books." Alas, this outcome doesn't mean Melissa's money family will be leaving California and moving to Canada. "We love this state, we love this country and we are not going to leave it," she writes. "Even though we could be married in Mass. or Conn., Canada, Holland, Spain and a handful of other countries, this is our home." Lindsay Lohan's girlfriend, Samantha Ronson, was baffled that people supported new legislation to improve living conditions for chickens while taking human rights away. "I guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man," she wrote on her MySpace. "That's really sad to me. Yes, I am glad that the chickens will have more room and better conditions as they wait to die, but I just think it's frightening that people show more compassion for tomorrow's dinner than for the chef." Famous loudmouth Rosie O'Donnell has been uncharacteristically quiet on the subject. When asked via her website what she thought would happen to same-sex couples who had been married, she wrote only, "the marriages will be annulled/ and no longer valid/ in the eyes of the law / like mine was years ago." When Rosie the Crusader is resigned to failure, that's pretty disheartening. Notice that there aren't any gay male celebrities speaking out about this. George Takei, much better known as Sulu on Star Trek, told Us Weekly how upset he was about his marriage to his partner of 21 years being called into question, but George Takei isn't exactly an Ellen. The power gays need to come out now more than ever. Quote

I have a hate pyramid that a lecutrer gave out and all of the steps leading to another event like the Holocaust have almost been fulfilled with gay driscrimination! You know more so than the gay marriage issue is the fact that people think they have a right to tell people that they can't have children. Like the bans on gay adoption! KimboCosmo Posted November 8, 2008 at 04:33 AM Posted November 8, 2008 at 04:33 AM (edited) Yeah, so instead of letting an amazing gay couple adopt children, they would rather make them live their lives in an orphanage or in foster care being passed from home to home, and possibly being abused along the way. THAT makes a whole lot of damn sense. This country is so effed up... Allie Posted November 8, 2008 at 07:16 AM Posted November 8, 2008 at 07:16 AM (edited) Yeah and in some places you can't be gay and a teacher!Really?!?!?!Why? I didn't know that until I heard Tuesday Morning by Melissa Etheridge:Even though he could not marryOr teach your children in our schoolsBecause who he wants to loveIs breaking your God's rulesHe stood up on a Tuesday MorningIn the terror he was braveAnd he made his choice and without a doubtA hundred lives he must have saved(live performance from her Lucky Live DVD [which I have watched almost as much as Celine's A New Day DVD lol] ...I remember her talking about that song, she said she wrote it in the shower bawling her head off) Yeah, a little OT there, sorry. It's just so effed up that people are discriminated because of LOVE. I cannot even wrap my head around it. Jacqui Posted November 8, 2008 at 08:40 AM Posted November 8, 2008 at 08:40 AM (edited) If two men or two women want to marry one another, it's nobody's business but their own. People should stop worrying about what other people do in their bedrooms and think about their own lives. This is pathetic. It is discrimination. How can it be justified? How come it's ok for people who aren't in love to get married so that one of them can move to another country? How come it's ok for a man to marry a woman and then abuse her? How come it's ok for a straight couple to marry and then cheat on each other? But it's wrong for a loving, faithful gay couple to be married? It's not even about the holy sacrament of Marriage, even athiests get married. It's about legal rights.I know I'm in a minority with my opinion, being a Christian, but if God feels as strongly anti-gay as some of the people in this world, I have a lot of questions for him. Why? People don't choose to be gay the way they choose to commit a crime. Even straight people don't pick who they fall for. I imagine most gay people would find it much easier and less controversial to be straight. But they can't.I feel bad for even saying this, but after reading more than half way through the Bible, there is a lot of questionable stuff in there. It says you're not supposed to eat certain foods on certain days of the week (but everyone conveniently ignores that, right?) It says that the worst thing a man can do is still better than the best thing a woman can do. (Uhh not true.) It says do not kill, and in the next verse God is instructing his people to fight wars that claim thousands of innocent lives. And I have rambled on quite a bit. I really hate this though, I have A LOT of gay friends and I'd like to see them enjoy the same happiness as anyone else. My whole family is quite stubbornly anti-gay and it makes me so mad.But on the (very small) bright side, at least they had a beautiful special day they'll remember forever, and I'm sure that commitment they made will still mean something in their hearts. *Sigh.* Edited November 8, 2008 at 08:41 AM by Jacqui Quote

ticktock Posted November 8, 2008 at 06:42 PM Posted November 8, 2008 at 06:42 PM (edited) I just don't really understand the homophobic obsession in America, i mean you have abortion, kids being killed by guns, gangs, drugs, corrupt politicians, corporate fraud, crumbling economy and so on .... Yet America makes time to discriminate gay people!!!! Why not tackle the larger issues in society?? Hell i'd understand it a bit more if the voters would practice what they preach but no, there is abortion available to anyone in the US, shops are open on Sundays , people eat shellfish , people having sex before marriage and teenage pregnancies and so on . And yet people use the bible as the basis for discrimination against gay people!!!
