What does Celine have in her ear?

Hello,

 

I was curious, what does Celine (and this goes for many other singers as well) have in her ear when she sings? Sometimes she will play with it, or the cord on her back. What is it? I always wanted to know. Like in A New Day DVD, you can see them clipping the little box on her when she changes outfits. I like how it has it's own little "suit" for every costume change

Actually, it's an ear phone so that she can

 

a) Hear how she sounds (the audience is loud)

Be informed about what's going on back stage

c) Looks hot!

They're her ear monitors. They allow her to hear what the band are playing as well as cutting out noise and interferance. You can imagine that on stage it is very noisy and it would be hard for Celine to keep her place in the song with all the instrument noise and crowd cheering. They play the audio into her ear in high quality via the sound desk so she can hear what is happening but she also has messages passed to her, like when her brother Michel had the ever so useful job of giving her the lyric if she ever forgot her words during A New Day and like when Rene would communicate to her via satellite on the LTAL tour. Sometimes she turns this up and down using a little volume knob on the wireless pack on her back if she is struggling to hear due to excess noise or if it's too loud for her or if she wants to shut Michel up....

Like during X Factor last year when it was obvioulsy screeching or something and she couldn't hear what she was screeching and she was trying to turn it down...

I think they were playing "We Belong Together" into her ears that night just to give her a bit of a challenge. lol

Actually I have observed before if Celine is wearing that thing, she must be singing live, else, it's all playback. hehe.

Well not necessarily, she lipsyncs with the thing in her ear as well, she has to know when to move her mouth.

I would have thought that when Celine has the ear pieces in she is singing live.When you watch normall tv performances many artists mime that is why they don't need the ear pieces.I think these were only made in the mid 1990's.Before that singers singing live would rely on screen monitors. And even Céline can sing live without the, remember Dance With my father when first the mike failed and then all in a sudden Céline took out the earpieces and jut started singing without them.. I think this is a great piece of work what only Céline can do... So she CAN do without them anyway

Almost every singer in concert now uses these in ear monitors. Basically they replace the big, old monitor speakers that would be placed on the stage, usually in the front so that the performer could hear themselves and the band.

 

The in ear monitors are better since being earphones it's easier for the performer(s) to hear themselves and other band members more directly. It also eliminates the clunky, boxy monitor speakers all over the stage that had to be lugged around.

As well as what you have all already said, i also heard (mabye on here somewhere) that they work on a series of clicks, like when a song is going to start and stuff. I don't remember exactly, somebody might know more about this?

You may be right about this. I know that in the studio they often record to something called "click tracks" which are sort of like a recording of what a metronome would sound like. The artist can listen to the clicks in their earphones to keep along with the timing/rhythm of each song. Of course the other musicians can use this too, not just the singer.

i think i remember seeing something about the earphones on some version of the AND dvd and she seemed really like upset that someone spoke into the headset and michel told her that it was him and she was like ok but it really seemed like it bothered her... has anyone else seen this clip? i think i ran across it one day searching youtube...
