The irony about Celine and the 1997 Oscars

She sang I Finally Found Someone with more passion and skill than her own song that night. :P :P

Agree or not?

Definitely agree. Proves just the point that her own English songs suck so bad even she herself can't render them live properly.

She should quit singing in English at last. Last call.

She was great on both songs!

Don't forget that since she performed Bab's song for the first time, we didn't have any expectations or a studio recording to compare too... :blow:

I guess it was because they asked her to perform IFFS at the last minute so she focused her energy on a song she never sang before and she only had like a day to rehearse instead of BYLM that she sang quit a lot before that..... priority strategy!!

i think barbra owns a live duet with celine

she performed at the oscars and at the grammy alone becoz of her ilness...

I think Céline sang both songs great. Of course, it was such a unique moment to find out she was going to sing Barbra's song also and they put a lot on this number, the trompetist and all, I guess that's why I remember it like a great and unique moment to witness.

What I don't agree on is more the fact that she didn't win for this song BYLM which remains a signature song for her today and will always be.. Isn't it Madonna who won that night? to my surprise with a song she had much difficulty singing live with only a pianist. I remember how difficult it seemed for her to sing it live but I don't even remember what song it was to be honest. :hmm: When we don't even remember the song that won exactly, it tells me it should not have won that year. :whistling: I guess it's because it was a song from Evita which was a hit that she won and Up close and personal wasn't ...really not for the song itself I thought then and now. BYLM is still big for Céline and I don't think it is for Madonna anymore.

She did good

It's always so bad when Barbra tries to go mainstream pop. She ends up singing with people like Bryan Adams. And do you know another irony? Barbra, one of the great Broadway singers didn't win the award (there you go, mainstream pop tart, and not to forget the movie it was for sucks), but another Broadway (turned-into-movie) song did, sung by one of the worst Broadway singers ever (she's good at what she does, but that, no no no, that was bad). You see my point: if Barbra had done a Broadway song, she could have won (but we have to be glad she didn't because then she would have performed herself and we wouldn't have Celine's version)

But didn't she say in an interview that they stopped at a record store and purchased a copy of the album and listened to it in the limo over and over again so Celine could try to learn it on the way to the show? I remember an interview about this way back when...

She did seem to focus on that song a little more, maybe because she was nervous, she sounded different. Plus she was reading words from sheet music, and on top of that, she was singing one of her idol's songs, so I'm sure she felt a different type of pressure that night.

Luuurrrvvveeee Celine's version of I finally found someone!!!!!

If memory serves me right, Celine sang it in place of Natalie Cole, right? I don't think Babs was set for this performance. I'd have to go through my VHS collection and wipe the dust off to be sure.

Does anyone else remember?

And yes, Celine had mere hours to rehearse and learn the song!

I think I'll be the odd one out here, I really didn't like her rendition of I Finally Found Someone. Babs owns that song, I think she sings it with such depth and emotion. Perhaps given more notice and preparation for Celine's version it would have grown on me more...

Yep, that's right. Celine sang it instead of Natalie Cole - or Barbra.

Definitely, she sang it better.

She had the benefit of fresh knowledge of the song -- virgin and raw emotion, as opposed to her tried and tired BYLM. Same way how everything sounds better in the studio.. she herself knows it, she doesn't like to rehearse songs before recording them.
