takeachance Posted August 28, 2008 at 09:43 PM Posted August 28, 2008 at 09:43 PM Hey guys, just wondering have I any partners in crime who are nurses on here and finding it really tough going? Im pretty confused as I have a love hate relationship with it, ive been told im very good and all that ( which makes my decision to leave harder) but in my soul i dont really think im cut out for it and im thinking of like going into something different. Just wondered if there was anyone else on here who is nursing and what ye think of it? Quote http://i66.tinypic.com/2dk08jn.gifRIP Rene Angelil xx Sending Love and Prayers to Celine

ZoraSourit Posted August 30, 2008 at 12:16 PM Posted August 30, 2008 at 12:16 PM I'm also a nurse, but I really love it. I believe I was born to become one. The thing about being a nurse is that sometimes is not easy, you have to deal with very strong emotions... And I was told several times that not everyone is cut out to be a nurse because of that.My advice to you is: if you don't really like it, leave it. It must be really sad for someone to work all their life in something they don't really like... I think it will make you go bitter, and that must be terrible. Let us know how are you doing and the decisions you're going to take. Like your nickname says: "Take a Chance". Decided after alot of thought that I am going to "Take a chance" and apply to become a secondary school Teacher and teach Biology. Ill keep up the odd bit of nursing with the agency until I get there, but most of my year will be spent preparing for my year to study as a secondary school teacher. My degree in Nursing is not recognised by the Teaching Council in Ireland so I will have to do Biology modules and maybe some sub Teaching to become recognised to teach the subject Biology. I think Teaching will be better for me, i just couldnt imagine doing the hours in Nursing for the rest of my life !! I also love the subject Biology, so maybe it willl work out. I think about this kind of stuff several times. I've studied Science in Nursing for 4 years and I've graduated almost 2 years ago. It's not easy when you're a student, there's a lot going on and usually the teachers and clinical instructors want you to learn massive amounts of stuff in very little time and they want you to be perfect, in a way become a caring machine and leave your feelings aside. Now, I can say that's simply not possible, and they know very well it isn't, that's why they make it so hard. They do so for you to become the best you can be. At this moment, of course I'm a nurse and I have developed almost every capacity and skill to be a great nurse, but I'm still a person. I have feelings, I act and react to things. I cry, I laugh... I get sad, I get happy. We are not machines, and If you want to know my opinion, I'm glad we aren't. We have to feel the need to help and to do our best, that's why if you aren't in this 100% you'll never be completely happy and neither you'll be a complete nurse. And then we always have to know better, we have to know what to do, instead of expecting someone tells us what to do. And when we don't know, ask someone who knows better, study, research. Never take anything for sure. I've been working in the emergency area in Hospitals and in ambulance departments. I never know what will come through those doors... We try to prepare ourselves but we are never ready. I've cried a few times, I felt like hugging someone and I also felt the need to be hugged. But that's life. If you're 100% into this, you'll be happy doing it no matter what. You'll smile for everyone who stand on their feet and go home and you'll learn to take something good from those who'll never. Takeachance, I'm glad you chose to be happy and took a chance. I'm really happy for you. I hope everyone turns out well. Filine Posted December 31, 2008 at 12:42 PM Posted December 31, 2008 at 12:42 PM I am a nurse too and consciously decided to work in a long term care facility. I could work in the most high care hospitals but choose to work in a field where skilled and caring professionals are really rare and so much needed. Sometimes it seems nobody likes to work with older people and chronically ill. I work on a ward where we provide long term care, palliative terminal care, care for people in a persistent vegative state ('coma') and people that need breathing support. Our residents (varying in age between 26 and 101) are totally depending on help of others. The care we give is the instrument to give them the tiniest opportunity to make something of a life that's compromised in every way! They had to give up everything and their whole families are affected by it. Of course ýou are never able to do enough! It's tough, it's very hard work both physically and mentally, it's a crappy pay and sometimes I am so frustrated I could scream...but on the good days I feel like I am flying. I definately have a love-hate relationship with my work but I never want to do anything else, I've known this was it since I was five! CelineVanDeCamp Posted December 31, 2008 at 01:34 PM Posted December 31, 2008 at 01:34 PM (edited) I once did an internship in a hospital (Gyn ward) and to be honest, I did the job of a nurse a whole year without being paid for it which sucked and my boss was a %&§$"! that made it all negative! I've worked in a Palliative care hospital before and it's really hard and demanding. You learn so much as a nurse and as a human being... I really loved it. I love it almost as much as I love the emergency area. I know they are very different, but when I started working in the emergency area I realized that many many times we have palliative patientes and not many people know how to deal with this situation, I found out that I could bring both worlds together if I wanted to, and I'm sure that's needed and appreciated by everyone. And yes, we have very crappy days many times, but when we have the good days, I feel like I could carry the weight of the world in my back easily.
