Ok, sorry I wasn't on here earlier with some news, but I'm at work. So I got some calls again and listened to most of EOM, some of PQTME, most of My Love, all of The Prayer until the end of It's a Man's World. The sound quality through the cell was not as good tonight, but the crowd response was unmistakable...as pure joy, excitement, and love for Celine. Birmingham is having a great time with our amazing and beautiful Chanteuse.

First impression: Celine Dion at the BJCC Arena

Posted by Mary Colurso -- Birmingham News January 15, 2009 11:02 PM

Oh, get over it, Celine Dion haters. I certainly did, after seeing -- and most of all, hearing -- her performance tonight at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham.

Yes, her 8:55 p.m. concert was Vegas glitzy, emotionally over the top and filled with sentimental power ballads. But you know what? Dion won me over eventually with that big ol' voice of hers and the sheer entertainment of the spectacle: eight dancers, a 10-member band and tons of special video effects.

I may change my mind in the sober light of morning, but right now, with glory notes ringing in my ears, I'm prepared to drop all my preconceived snarkiness and give the Canadian-born superstar an enthusiastic vote of approval.

I admit to emitting a few eye rolls and chuckles here and there; Dion tended to overdo her mugging for the cameras, and she did sing the ultra-weepy "All By Myself" with a straight face. Gotta give her credit for pinpoint pitch, however -- and you never, ever had to wonder if the diva was lip-syncing.

Look for the full review later on al.com and on Saturday's Page 2 of The Birmingham News.

Its so uncool to like Celine she has to say she is drunk...

pfft

Wake up everybody no more sleeping in bed

No more backward thinking time for thinking ahead

The world has changed so very much

From what it used to be

There is so much hatred war and poverty

Wake up all the teachers time to teach a new way

Maybe then they'll listen to what you have to say

Cause they're the ones who's coming up and the world is in their hands

When you teach the children teach them the best you can.

The world won't get no better if we just let it be

The world won't get no better we gotta change it

So make a change www.thehungersite.com

So I've seen Celine twice on this tour now. In Nashville on Tuesday - and in Birmingham.

Nashville - I had floor seats, ninth row. And this time I was in the balcony....but they were fantastic seats...and I could see THE STAGE. So I actually prefered my seats tonight.

She was spot on wonderful in Birmingham. She seemed more relaxed than she was in Nashville. Vocally - she was pretty much the same. She had some amazing moments for both concerts.

She talked more tonight....and seemed so comfortable - and just having fun. She talked about the plane crash in New York (which I got video of). And how she was watching it on TV.

The arena was close to full. A few empty rows in the very top. Nashville was basically full.

The show was AWESOME - and I tried to take shorter video clips this time....so I'll try to get those up. :D

...and she did sound like she had a bit of a cold when she was talking...but not so much when she was singing...AND I'm just amazed at how she works the stage. She sweats a TON. Especially tonight - because the arena was SO HOT!!

Just got home from B'ham...wow, what a show! The most attention I recieved was...

I had walked to the front 3 or 4 times trying to throw Celine my frog, and she never saw me, and when she finally did, the lights or something must have blinded her from seeing my frog, but she could tell I was waving and jumping like crazy...I was only about 2 feet from her...she pointed at me, and jumped and smiled and danced a little. She was very cute! Trying again in Atlanta for my frog...seems like I'm not having the best of luck with it! I'll post more later, but it is almost 4:30am here, and we are BEAT.

Oh, and I bought a brand new laptop today, because my other one bit the dust, so I'll have to get these pics and videos on here...someone help me, and teach me how to do videos! I'm also having a weird issue on my new laptop, my videos play, and they are so beautiful, but there is no sound? And the volumn IS UP. We have checked all of that! Errr...ok, well more to come guys! :) Goodnight!

The power of Dion: Celine hard to resist at Birmingham concert

Posted by Mary Colurso -- Birmingham News January 16, 2009 1:46 AM

Review rating: Three out of five stars

The best way to approach Celine Dion's Thursday concert in Birmingham was to sit back, smile sweetly and succumb.

Oh, a couple of brain cells might have to be put on hold temporarily. Your heart would have been in danger of swelling to Valentine size.

But is that such a terrible thing, when the Canadian superstar in question has such a glorious voice? Dion, 40, is the owner of a huge and supple instrument that's capable of startling precision and clarity.

Of course, it was much on display during her 8:55 p.m. show at the BJCC Arena. Ticketholders very nearly filled the place for Dion's 100-minute performance in the round, her first engagement here in 10 years.

Also front-and-center were the elements critics tend to loathe: Dion's syrupy song choices, her reliance on glory notes, her campy mugging, her Vegas-style glitz. This was a theatrical, fast-moving, highly choreographed affair -- in that way, reminiscent of some of Madonna's tours -- and the singer shared her stage with a 10-member band, eight dancers and oodles of special video effects.

For her showy entrance, Dion emerged at the center of a giant cube of computerized screens, belting the dance tune "I Drove All Night." She used the cube as a visual device throughout the evening, strutting on various platforms in sky-high stilettos and moving easily through signature songs.

Dion's agenda included a few numbers from her latest disc, 2007's "Taking Chances," but she mainly relied on fan favorites: "The Power of Love," "I'm Your Lady," "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," "Because You Loved Me," "I'm Your Angel," "All By Myself," "My Heart Will Go On." (This left a ringing glory note in the air as audience members filed out around 10:35 p.m.)

First-timers must have noticed that Dion's earnest, goofy persona clashed with the tight, sparkly mini-dresses and flowing gown she wore (count 'em: five costume changes), not to mention the big, ta-da! poses she struck. It helped to realize that gawky-colt syndrome has long been part of Dion's essential package; steadfast admirers find it endearing.

Uncool? Sure. Over the top? Definitely. Still, someone has to excel at show-biz sentimentality, and it might as well be Dion. At the BJCC, her powerful vocals -- always live, never lip-synced -- had a way of sneaking past your cynicism and conquering.

The concert last night was awesome! Celine was amazing and by the time we left I was hoarse from al the screaming. :D Oh my goodness, that was one of the best experience I have ever had and I've been thinking about it constantly since it ended!

Had awesome seats, could see the stage very very well from where we were, in the first ten rows. Bought a photo afterwards that I'm gonna hang on my wall and leave there forever. :D I sound like a child. Lol.

Hope she tours again so I can see her!
